Miss Carousel's Picture
Miss Carousel, Dusseldorf, Germany/Garda, Italy Age and Occupation: 29, International Product Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Front End Developer Engagement Date: May 29, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: I’m an American-Italian girl living in Germany with my Belgian fiancé, planning a wedding in Italy. I can’t wait to show our guests the wonderful Lake Garda, Verona, and want our wedding to be a fun filled, charming, day in the life of “La dolce vita.” Mr. C and I love spending time together, and have added wedding related activities to our cooking nights, dance lessons, and road trips. We love sampling restaurants, could listen to Sinatra all day, and are just a tad geeky and into technology. As we want all of our passions to be part of our marriage, what better way to start than by incorporating them in our wedding day?
About Miss Carousel

I’ll admit it: before that night in Germany when Mr. Carousel proposed, I never pictured myself wearing an engagement ring. To be honest, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted one.

Before you start thinking I’m so above it all, that all changed about five minutes after the proposal when Mr. Carousel asked me, “Shall we pick a ring together?” and I answered “Yes—tomorrow!” Suddenly I could hardly wait to have a ring on my finger. (My transformation into a wedding-obsessed bride-to-be was starting…)

During our crazy drive to Amsterdam to get ourselves an engagement ring, Mr. Carousel and I discussed my ring preferences. All I knew was that I wanted something elegant with a diamond, but I reassured Mr. Carousel that there would be no need to break the bank! We agreed that we would start by looking for something equal to half or less of Mr. Carousel’s monthly salary.

We started at the Diamond Museum (neither of us knew anything about diamonds, so we figured it was a good place to begin), and that’s where we found the perfect ring: elegant, classy, sweet, beautiful, and…modest.

A Perfectly Beautiful (and Modest) Engagement Ring : wedding italy rings Proposa02 Proposal 2 ring

Please excuse the clumsiness of the pics. We’re totally amateurs.

We found it in the outlet part of the museum shop so, even though the diamond was very high quality, we spent less than the agreed budget.

I know that, especially by American standards, it’s a very modest ring. But, as a young couple who has yet to buy their own house (not to mention the upcoming wedding costs), we figured why spend more than what we could easily afford? Why wait to save money for a ring, postponing the engagement for months? This, at least, was what went through our minds.

However, in the end an engagement ring is a promise of love between two people, and every time I look at mine I feel this huge, happy inner smile. Do you?

If you did wait to save up for the ring, was it worth it?

Mr. Grape proposed to me with a mood ring, haha. We paid for the garnet e-ring together because I didn’t want the total cost to fall on him, and I didn’t want to wear thousands (or even more than maybe $100-200) of jewelry on one finger. Makes me nervous. Your ring is beautiful!

Miss Carousel,
Your ring is beautiful. I love the elegant, understatedness of it. I agree with you on the cost of the engagement ring. My fiance and I were fortunate enough to have a family diamond that has been passed down for four generations and I just had it reset in a new setting. I think you made a wise decesion regarding your ring. I love it and it seems to fit you.

When we first started talking about getting engaged my grandma pulled me aside and said “Remember the size of the ring doesn’t guarantee forever it’s what’s in your heart not on your finger.” I keep that in mind everyday because my grandparents were married for 53 years.

I think that your ring is beautiful just the way it is.

I love it! We had to save up a little for my ring, but we’re easily paying it off in a year. It’s been good for us, because it’s the first time we’ve paid off a bill together.

Oh. It’s perfect. My ring is similar. One of my friends recently got married and her ring is bling to the extreme! That wouldn’t represent who we are right now. We’re like you, starting out together, new in our careers etc. We don’t need all that extra… :)

Plus you have an awesome story to go with the ring!

I think it’s lovely and perfect! I like delicate rings.
Just because i’m curious - what is the white stuff in between your fingers in the bottom picture?

It’s perfect. My engagement ring is a $30 stunt double and I’m still married. Honestly, I love it and will be sad when I get an annaversary ring.

Your ring is so lovely and delicate! Mine is also “modest” because we decided long before we got engaged that we’d rather spend the cash on our life together. My only request was that it be a Canadian diamond, and my fiance picked out and surprised me with a gorgeous ring that we both love. We are saving up for the matching band and will buy it on an anniversary.

I like the approach and the reasoning behind your decision. I always expected to have a small ring and would have been completely OK with it. I told my fiancée this multiple times, but he knew a friend of a friend who was a jeweler and gave him a great deal, so it’s much bigger than I expected but still within a budget he was comfortable with. I must say I’ve been spoiled by the bling and the compliments :-) I’m not a materialistic person overall, but I’m very thankful to have one very fancy and nice thing to wear that also symbolizes so much. I smile on the outside when I receive compliments, but I smile on the inside every time I look at it and think about the day he gave it to me and all the special things it means to me.

He spent about a half month’s salary and intentionally got a small, simple ring. He knows me very well - it’s perfect. He went for quality over size and I have a .35 karat ring that is set down low to avoid getting snagged on things throughout the day.

He also knew that I wouldn’t want to take it off, and since we’re both motorcycle riders (that’s how we met) it had to fit under my gloves and not get in the way.

I also now don’t have to worry about wearing it out anywhere in public for fear that I will be robbed. My mother received a larger ring for her 20th anniversary and ends up leaving it at home 80% of the time for this reason alone.

Wow, that looks just like mine, except mine is white gold. =] I like seeing others like mine, because there are so many crazy huge and elaborate rings that I sometimes feel like I’m not measuring up to other bride-to-be’s. Lol

I think it’s classic and beautiful! And the meaning behind the ring is priceless. Finding it: unforgettable!

Your ring is very pretty :)
I wanted something petite for mine as well because I have little hands haha. Mine was an awesome price because the store was going out of business. I think we got more than what FI paid for. It is still dainty enough fore me, but it has 3 stones like I wanted.

I’m glad to know there are many others of you out there who would rather use a larger budget for something you need rather than want. It’s nice to have something to wear that is beautiful, but breaking the bank is not necessary as it’s ultimately a symbol of your love - not for status.

I’m irritated because I live in a ritzy part of town with the FI’s parents still… and everyone around, his mom included, has either started with a huge chunk of rock on their hand or upgraded soon after. I don’t believe in upgrading - I will always want to wear my original ring, but if we can afford anniversary additions, I wouldn’t mind.

I can’t stand our one acquaintance who is not engaged yet - but talks like she is, and expects to get the ring she wants which is $20,000. yes, that’s right, because she says “He can afford it.” GRR!!! There is more that you could do with that!

HAHAHHA Sorry ladies - I just have a piece of mind that I’m not able to share with anyone else because I’m far from home :)

Luv you Bees!

Congratulations! The ring is lovely, and the story behind it is remarkable!

With engagement parties abounding, I’d like to suggest that you find your very own special margarita recipe to help keep the celebrations going strong! Did you know that the margarita was America’s #1 cocktail drink!

A toast to the happy couple! Enjoy!
