Videography? Yes, Please!

March 12th, 2011 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

In the beginning of wedding planning, videography was not in the forefront of my mind. I thought it was silly to spend money on a grainy, shaky home video that Uncle Bob could have taken for free.

Videography? Yes, Please! : wedding morgantown videography 1 1

But everything changed one day once I saw Mr. Biscuit’s cousin’s wedding video. I am not an emotional person, but this video brought me to tears. Seriously, I was sitting at my computer blubbering like an idiot.

How could a simple video cause such passionate pathos? Here, just check it out yourself:

Angela & Warren’s Wedding from Kiss The Bride Films on Vimeo.

After I saw that video, I was sold. I had to have videography. The WIC got me hook, line, and sinker. And amazingly enough, my very talented cousin had started her own videography business as a side job a few months earlier. However, since she’s in the wedding, that’s not really going to work. It would be a bit awkward to watch her walk down the aisle bouquet in one hand, professional camcorder in the other.

So I began my search. I quickly discovered that Morgantown was a videographer wasteland. I had to go to Pittsburgh to find what I wanted. And that I did; I found an amazing company with the most beautiful wedding videos ever. I loved them. They were beautiful. And their packages ranged from $4-6,000. Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen. Unfortunately, no one else I found in the area had anything close to what I wanted when it came to videography. They didn’t have the equipment nor the eye that I was looking for.

Devastated that I would have to give up on something important to me do to my locale, I didn’t really do much with the videography for awhile. Well, that’s a lie. I tried to somehow take what we were already paying for the wedding down by $6000, which proved to be all but impossible.

Videography? Yes, Please! : wedding morgantown videography 2 2

Then, one day, I had a lightbulb moment and I checked out Craigslist. Amazingly enough, some art students had adds up there offering affordable videography services. Their work was fresh and of wonderful quality. Score!

Videography? Yes, Please! : wedding morgantown videography 3 3

Now, I just have to choose one of these talented souls, which is proving to be the hardest job yet. I’m hoping to pick someone awesome in the next week or so and get a contract signed.

Did any of you guys find your vendors via Craigslist? Anyone else realize they are ridiculously picky when it comes to their wedding video?

I’m with you. I love all the videographers here in Pittsburgh, but there is no way I’m spending $6000 for one. I will be stalking recent art institute graduates.

I am with you! We really have like $0 budget for videography!

I am lucky to have access to some decent camcorders and tripods, so at the very least I’m going to have a couple placed strategically during the ceremony.

I also own a flip camera, so I’m hoping that I can use that to get some candid footage of me getting ready.

All I really need is the raw digital footage- I’m pretty good with iMovie, so I’m totally cool with editing it myself… I just need someone to get me good footage!

I keep debating what to do. I’ve heard that the ceremony goes by so fast so I really want video of the ceremony. But I haven’t been sold on having video for the entire wedding. I usually run from videos. I just sound funny and make weird faces. I’m going to have to check out Craigslist to see if I can find a videograher for the ceremony.

my advise is: don’t be afraid to tell tell what your budget is and how amazing you think their work is.

we are paying our videographer $3K, that’s whole day of coverage (no time limit), same day edit and shooting part of our engagement photoshoot

She advertises all these for >6K, but somehow she was willing to give us what we wanted for the price that we can afford. Sometimes there’re willing to come down in price because it’s better to make less money than making no money at all. Of course I can’t speak for every videographer, but that’s my experience.

Good luck with your decision!

I was super picky but eventually the right deal just kind of fell in my lap!

@heleng5: This is definitely true! I had a similar experience with our photographer she was totally out of our budget but eventually we were able to make it work.

I’m scared to look at videography bc of the price, but hopefully will be able to find something that I can afford and that will make me cry…you know, in the good way!

I found a great videographer in Pittsburgh, and we’re getting his “medium level package” for around $1300.

He’s in the Waterfront, and I’ll tell you right away - walking back to his studio, I was fearing for my life! My mom and I had to call him to be let into this unmarked, locked building and, suffice it to say, the many different rooms were unfinished and/or dark. But his films are gorgeous, he has several awards, and the price was right!

Good luck finding a videographer you like!

Craigslist was full of fail in my area, but I’ve heard other brides who have had amazing luck. I’m so glad you’re one of them! :)

Woah, 6K is pricey!! Good call on looking at craigslist. We weren’t going to have video, until about 2 weeks before the wedding. Because we booked so late (and were pretty blaze about it) we got an ah-mazing deal. Just over 1K for a video (2 DVDs, 1 blue ray), highlight reel and all of the raw footage/data on a harddrive.

I am in your exact same situation, but still have not decided what to do about it! Students are definitely the way to go if you don’t have the money to pay a professional, but it’s also such a risk! Keep us updated on how it goes for you…

@Miss Carousel: As much as I hate to say booking a student is a risk (as I drill on people’s teeth as a student every day), it is something to think about. I’m lucky enough to have a talented cousin who can play around with the editing if I get raw footage though.

Why does this have to be so hard? A little part of me wishes I was still naive to all things video oriented in wedding land.

I must be a really lucky bride! We’re going to ask a friend, who’s also an indy film director who lives behind the camera on the sets, to do ours! His latest film was picked up by one of the better distributors, too! (Now, I just gotta get OUR copy… and make him sign it, mwahahahahaha!)

The only cost will be film and probably a mixed drink or two that we’ll provide.
