Mrs. Giraffe's Picture
Mrs. Giraffe, Chicago Age and Occupation: 23, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Music Student Teacher Engagement Date: October 23, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church & Idlewild Country Club About Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!
About Mrs. Giraffe

I realize I haven’t mentioned my wedding dress at all yet, possibly because there’s no exciting story. I saw it in a magazine, said I wanted that one, tried it on 2.5 years before the wedding, went back a year later after I first tried it on, and Mama Giraffe bought it for me. I didn’t change my mind, worry, or spend hours looking at dresses. It’s just not my style. I hate trying on clothes normally, and I’m far from a fashionista so the whole dress process was 100% me.

That being said, wedding planning has made me crazy and I’ve had wedding superstition all in my head. I’m convinced it’s bad luck for Mr. G to see my dress, so I’m keeping it under wraps until the big day.

But then, come to think of it, I haven’t shared my bridesmaids’ dresses either…frankly, because I don’t like to think of them. I’m going to be honest with you, here, Hive. Bear with me.

See, shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses (BMDs) was not a good experience. There was lot of drama, arguing, anger, and tears. I’m normally a strong person, but I spent the end of day crying, and I could only be comforted by BMs Mang and Chipotle.

It was horrible and a mess, and I don’t like to think about that day. It was nothing like I had imagined it would be, and it certainly was not fun.

What does this mean? Well as far as the next-to-impossible task of choosing one dress for six different girls, I found it. I mean, I found a dress I loved. It was also way more money than I wanted my girls to spend. This might sound bridezilla of me, but by the end of the day, I was so emotionally exhausted and ready to give up, that I just went with the dress.

Yes, I love the BMDs a lot, but I hate the cost, and sometimes it gets to a point when you have little energy left, and I just hit that point.

But that’s not just it; I have even more of a bad taste in my mouth about the whole thing.

The BMDs were purchased from House of Brides, a Chicago-land bridal shop. Everyone working there is very nice, and I had visited it once before, when I was just looking. It seemed like a good place to go with, but well…you’ll see.

I’ll be honest, I’m still pretty pissed off about this. At the time of purchase, House of Brides had my BMDslisted on their website for $143 (now they’re available for $111 and my girls’ dresses haven’t even come in yet). Funny story: my girls all paid $207. I called HoB to ask if they’d match their website prices, but they don’t because, “we’re paying for the consultant and all the help they gave us.”

Huh. Seeing as half my girls called in their order so no consultant was even used, and, not to mention that I would’ve used a consultant even if we hadn’t gone with HoB, I don’t know why we have to “pay for one.”  The store, when I brought up the web price to them, did tell me, since I mentioned it, that they would take $15 off.

Why am I ranting to you guys? This is why: if you order of the HoB website, you can use their store for alterations. I asked if I could have my girls just order off the site, and they fed me a bunch of garbage about how all the dresses had to be ordered through the store so they could come in at the same time—it was some BS for sure. Long story short, they totally did it for the money and I totally fell for it. House of Brides has great dresses and a great selection, but if you want to use them, order off their website—nearly all the prices are cheaper.

And that my friends, is why I haven’t been thinking about my BMDs. I’m still hurt about the shopping experience and I’m still bitter (and more so annoyed) at the price.

Oh, and the dress in question? That brown color will be the trim and the rest will be baby blue.

Cute? Definitely. Worth all the headache and heartache? Probably not.

Anybody else have a bad wedding related experience? How did you get over it (because that’s the part I’m having trouble with)?

That’s awful and pretty shady in my opinion. Thanks for sharing, though. At least you can help others brides not make the same mistake.

The dresses are beautiful and super classy, I can imagine you fell in love with them! Chalk the experience up to “You win some, you lose some”. I’m sure it probably hurts more than if you had lost the money yourself as you feel bad and guilty for your friends, but I’m sure they would not want you to feel like this…

I’m sorry you had a bad shopping experience! HoB annoys me too… my sister and I went there for her to try on some BM dresses. We didn’t end up ordering from there, but I had to sign up with my name/email/phone # in order to get the appointment. I foolishly put my real phone # and now I get automated phone calls and text messages from them all the time about their sales… and I cannot figure out how to get off their call list. It’s really frustrating.

I bought my dress from HoB but only b/c they were having a sale and it was cheaper than I found it elsewhere online or in other salons. However, when I went to pick my BMDs, we went to HoB to try them on and make sure my BM’s liked the style. But I’m going to be ordering them online from netbride.com for this very reason. I read a lot of negative reviews for HoB for the reasons you stated. I’m really hoping I don’t run into any issues once my dress comes in. Good luck to you!!!!!

HoB is notorious for sending out letters to brides stating a certain competitor of theirs is going out of business which is really shady business practices. I’m sorry you had such problems with them!

You should send this review to corporate and ask them to reconsider.

Whoa. That’s ridiculous they would jack the prices up for those reasons. My sister is planning on getting her dress altered at HoB, and now I’d better give her a heads up. I’m sorry to hear you had a bad experience, but your BM dresses are lovely!

Yes. My BM dress shopping was less than stellar. While I made an appointment for a large party - I made an appointment. They huffed and puffed and complained and just UGH. Now none of them even carry a single dress in the color I want to try on, so buying it, sight unseen - hard to do, when the BMs are paying $200. I feel your pain. Not always as much fun as it should be.

Ugh. I’m with you on the upsetting BMD thing. The whole appointment got out of control and my BMs had *nothing* to do with it. Since then I’ve learned to not make decisions when I’m stressed or feeling pressured.

Wow, almost a $100 difference. I would not be happy either. Sorry that sucks.

I actually ordered my wedding dress from there, but only because when I found it online and called, it was HALF of what a local store had quoted me. I had shopped around my town and then looked the dress up online to see if I could find discount places and HoB popped up. I couldn’t believe my ears when I called, but I did read a lot of reviews of people who had bad experiences when they went in and tried to order online. I would say if you ever go with them, do your research elsewhere and then call them and order because it is normally much cheaper and there is no tax (assuming you live out of state) and free shipping. I am really sorry you had to go through that though, that would be miserable!

ugh! A store around here did something similar to me and my girls!

I had picked out 5 different styles of the same designer so the girls could pick a dress that flattered them best. Since they are all in different parts of NJ (and one is in PA) I told them to use whatever bridal shop was closest to their home since the first place we originally went to didn’t offer any kind of group discount.

When we picked out the styles, an older consultant let me know that she would be leaving my information for the bridal consultant (who was not in that day) and they would create the file for me when she came in. Okay, no big deal.

Then one of my BM’s calls in her order and they tell her that there’s no record of me, blah blah. FINALLY the dress shop calls me and I give them hell, but the file gets created and now apparently the girls can call in their order.

Almost another month goes by and I get a call from the shop who says they’ve been “trying to reach my BM Jenn bc we don’t have her credit card expiration date but she’s not returning our calls”. I check into this with Jenn who is blindsided by this because they never called her at all! So then we had to pay rush fees on the dresses and they;re coming in a mere two weeks before the wedding (hopefully). It was ridiculous. BM Jenn ended up calling the shop and giving them hell and we wrote letters to the BBB because their communication was absolutely non-existant.
