About Mrs. Cotton Candy

In Memory of…

March 14th, 2011 @ 9:42 am by Mrs. Cotton Candy

This past Valentine’s Day, in typical Cotton Candy fashion, we spent the day out shopping at our local Costco and feasting on Costco chicken bakes and hot dogs. Now before you start feeling sorry for us thinking that our relationship is devoid of all things romance, you should know that Valentine’s Day has never held much importance for us. See, about 15 years ago on Valentine’s Day (six years before Mr. Cotton Candy and I met), Mr. Cotton Candy’s father lost his battle with liver disease and passed away. Needless to say, February 14th is no day for celebration in his family or in our relationship.

This was a huge sore spot for me in the first couple years of our relationship. What can I say? I was young, dumb, and selfish and didn’t understand how the death of his father meant I didn’t get flowers on V-day. Yeah, I know—I suck. And looking back I feel like a total jerk for ever making a day that holds so much sadness for him all about me. Hopefully I’ll be able to right some of these wrongs and honor his dad on a day that his absence will greatly be felt: our wedding day.

One of Mr. Cotton Candy’s few possessions from his father is his father’s wedding band.

We’ll be handing this precious over to our florist the week before our wedding for her to incorporate into his boutonniere. It’ll be a small but important visual reminder of his father on our wedding day.

How do you plan to honor your departed love ones on your wedding day?

I’ve never heard of this strategy, but I LOVE it. So thoughtful!

How touching. I can’t wait to see the finished product. Don’t beat yourself up too much about the early V-days. It takes to time to learn the impact on a family member’s death on your SO.

What a wonderful way of incorporating such a sentimental thing into the bout. It is so nice to think about Mr. CC wearing his dad over his heart all day.

That is such a lovely idea. We hung a photo of Mr. M,’s grandmother from his. It really meant a lot to him.

And I totally get the sadness about someone out love passing away on a holiday. My dad passed away on new years eve and ever since then I just have not gotten into the celebration like I use to.

That is such a special way to incorporate Mr. CC’s father’s ring.

What a great post. I lost my mother on Christmas Eve 2008, so as you might expect, I can’t really get into the holiday spirit. We chose to have a photo of my mother on her wedding day and remember her with some of her favorite songs and favorite flowers. I also wore her engagement ring and wedding band on my right hand.
My experience aside, I think the way you have chosen to remember him is wonderful. And I’m sure he would be honored to be a part of your day in this way.

I think that sounds like a fabulous way to honor his father-and the ring will be close to Mr. CC’s heart the whole day.

I have always been very close to my Grandfather, so it has been hard that he passed away so shortly before I’m getting married. I’m having my florist wrap the stems of my bouquet with his handkerchief (It has his initials on it in light blue). After the wedding I’m going to place my bouquet on his grave to bring a little bit of my wedding to him.

Miss Cotton Candy, I know EXACTLY how you feel. Mr. Magic’s dad also passed away on Valentine’s Day in 2002. Every year it is a sad and somewhat awkward day for all of us.

@Mrs. Meerkat: @SMW: Its so hard getting past the significance of the day regardless of how much time pass.
@Whimsical.Sprite: I love that idea such a wonderful gesture!
@Miss Magic: what a coincidence! We have the same awkwardness every Feb 14! @Miss Carousel: Its an amazing ring Mr. CC dad had a great sense of style!

I think this gesture goes a long way toward mending any hurt feelings from Feb. 14th’s past. Sweet and touching!
