Maui Me

March 14th, 2011 @ 5:48 pm by Mrs. Waffle

Woohoo! The Waffles are officially booked for a 10 day honeymoon in Maui!

We were very diligent in our research before booking as we wanted to stay near the water, but not in a resort where there are tons of people and lots of kidlets running here and there. Our hours of research and reading customer reviews paid off because we found a glorious place called the Aston Mahana. The building is full of studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom fully furnished and privately owned condos. The condo owners are required to keep everything up to date and to specific standards. It had a very high rating on Trip Advisor and is, best of all, Waffle budget friendly. Every unit has floor to ceiling windows and faces the ocean. GORGEOUS!

We are seriously, seriously on the beach. For realsies—oceanfront property. I am so excited to know that all 10 days we are going to be there it will be like this…

Even though I have a super big fear of sharks, I am going to be in that water every day. Directly in front of our building is a reef and it supposedly has phenomenal snorkeling. Watch out fishies and turtles, ’cause here I come!

Have you booked your honeymoon yet?

Maui is HEAVEN!! Kaanapali beach is awesome. I highly recommend renting from Snorkel Bob’s if you don’t have snorkels included in your condo rental. Hubby and I rented the Ultimate Truth Ensemble which was a much nicer fitting and more comfortable than the other ones. $35/week! We used them the whole week and just threw them in the back of the Jeep.

I highly recommend snorkeling at Black Rock. Go super early! We saw 2 sea turtles, 5 sting rays, and a bazillion fish the morning we went.

Helpful tip: If Mr. Waffles has facial hair on his upper lip… smear some petroleum jelly over it to create a better seal for your snorkel mask. We didn’t find out until the last day and it would’ve been super helpful! My poor Hubby’s mask was constantly filling with water and kept having to empty his mask. Total PITA.

I have restaurant and other touristy recommendations too if you want to PM me! I’ll be more than glad to give you some help! :)

5 Things:
1. Get “Maui Revealed.” Best $$ you’ll ever spend for your trip.
2. Go to Maui Fish market in Kaanapali for lunch or to get fish to cook at your condo.
3. Ululani’s shave ice. Soooooo yummy.
4. check the Maui cultural center to see if there are any shows you’d be interested in. We got to see John Legend when we were there - it was an awesome show.
5. If you like sushi, eat at Sansei. So good.

This started out as a “3 things” post and slowly got bigger…hope you have an amazing time!

I am so jealous. This is a fantastic place to stay. I stayed here over a year ago and loved every minute. Breakfast on the balcony watching the sun rise is a dream. The sound of the surf will put you to sleep each night.

Make sure to eat at the restaurant in the Cannery Mall. It is very good. Also, just an FYI, this property is at the very end of the road and sort of hard to find.

Oh, it looks absolutely splendid! You two are smart to get 10 days of honeymoon time on a budget.

Shark tip #1: Always keep someone else between you and the rest of the open ocean. (I may be a little freaked about chompy aquatic life too.)

We honeymooned in Maui for 10 days too! It was AMAZING. We even did a little video synopsis of our trip: http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/06/02/honeymoon-video/

Just a little sneak peek of all the fun you’re going to have in Maui!

When I saw the photo at the top of this post, I thought, “Hey that looks like the Aston Mahana where we stayed…” Lo and behold–it is! The windows had an amazing view. We had a really great experience there–the staff is very friendly and even though we didn’t plan ahead, they had an activities concierge that helped us pick and book things to do.

We randomly found a taco truck called Ohana Tacos which is open only in the evenings a little bit past the hotel–the tacos were amazing. Check ‘em out!

Have fun in Maui, I wish I could go back!

Eat at Hula Grill for lunch, Leilanis for dinner- both in Whaler’s Village. You will see the most amazing sunsets and most beautiful flowers. Get people to take lots of pics of you both as a couple! Think Christmas cards.
