About Mrs. Tartlet

Pixie Cuts and Boing-Boing Curls

March 14th, 2011 @ 10:13 am by Mrs. Tartlet

…or why I’m dead set on scheduling a hair trial before the wedding.

The year was 2008. My hair was well below my shoulders and had started to acquire that scraggly look at the ends that screams for a trim. As I sat in the salon with my head dutifully tilted downward, quietly listening to the sound of the stylist’s scissors snip-snipping away along with her chatter to a nearby stylist, all conversation suddenly ceased, and I hear a terrified “oops…” whispered from behind me. Essentially, the stylist was a little too distracted talking with her nearby co-worker and had mistakenly lopped off a huge chunk of my hair. Unfortunately, no amount of layering and blending could mask the error. I couldn’t find any photos immediately after the cut (probably because I was refusing to be in any photos at this point), but I did scrounge one up to show y’all what my “trim” looked like a couple months later:

The haircut fiasco of 2008

Needless to say, I never went back to that salon again.

Fast forward a couple years of patient hair growth, and it was finally long enough to style. Mr. Tartlet and I had the opportunity to go to a black-tie charity event, and I figured I would go out on a limb to get my hair done. Although I didn’t tell the stylist at the time, I was secretly hoping that this could be my undercover hair trial to determine whether they could give me the look I wanted. I brought in an inspiration photo that looked like this:

And ended up with a ’do that looked like this:

The hairstyle fail of 2010. Note my crossed arms of displeasure.

The stylist assured me that the curls would “fall out” given some time, and if they didn’t to just run my fingers through them a bit. Three hours later my hair still looked like a jumble of boing-boing curls, and when I tried stretching them out a bit I ended up with a hot mess of knots at the end of my hair. Solution? I gave up and jumped in the shower an hour before the event and threw my hair into a slick ponytail for the evening.

After a discouraging six years of salon hopping, I had given up hope of finding someone who could consistently style and cut my hair. Planning our wedding opened up a entirely new avenue of salons, though, via online review sites , which is where I found the ladies of Posh Hair & Makeup Studio. Remember the loose, tousled waves I so wanted? I handed them the same set of inspirational photos and was much happier with the result:

I promise I’ll share where this photo came from in a little while, but unfortunately for Mr. Tartlet this is all he gets to see for quite some time. *evil grin* Sorry to be a tease, babe, but you know I’m slightly diabolical like that.

Does anyone else have a hard time landing a good haircut? Are you scheduling a hair trial before your wedding?

I am SOO worried about having horrible hair the day of the wedding. I have yet to find an amazing hair stylist in the Milwaukee WI area. So many attempts, so many fails. I am dreading finding someone to do my bridal hair :(

I’ve been salon hopping for years too! I thought it was just me who always gets bad cuts. Love your hair in the last pics. Congrats on finding someone.

Love your hair. I wanted lose curls like that but on the beach there was no way they would survive.

I just don’t get how a stylist can have that big of an “oops” moment. Jeeze, I would have flipped out. I’m loving the last pic!

I typically do my own hair from styling to the cut but my cousin is a hair stylist so I will be going to hair for my wedding day style and she is insisting on a hair trial.

Your hair looks amazing in that last picture! I’ve had a stylist cut too much off and I was so upset!

Oh my gosh… I hate those boing-boing curls. Everytime I ask for soft waves, I end out up with those ridiculous boing-boing curls. I’m WAY too old for those curls. You look absolutely beautiful in the last photo! Love it!

I’m nervous about bridal hair too. It’s it funny the stuff that stresses us out about our own weddings? It’s just hair afterall, BUT it’s our BRIDAL HAIR!! lol

OMG, the terrified salon “oops” reminded me of my experience with a hair salon years ago. I had wanted something very similar to Mila’s long wavy hair but instead, the salon chemically permed my hair! It was such a waste of money and the experience left me feeling very dejected. Thankfully, I found another one that was able to get my hair back to looking close to normal. From the looks of it, Posh Hair & Makeup knows how to listen to what YOU want. You look absolutely FABULOUS!

You hair looks so great! You obviously ended up finding a great stylist. I haven’t found one I like yet . . . despite trusting high Yelp reviews.

@Miss Otter: I feel you on the apprehension! I hope you’re able to find someone who does a fabulous job. Maybe some gals on the boards here can give you some recommendations!
@TheFutureMcBride: Thank you! And, I’m also glad to know I’m not the only one who has trouble finding a salon “home.”
@Mrs. Meerkat: My hair would go flat on a beach, too. They had to put soooo much product to keep those loose curls for just the afternoon!
@ktisthatbees: I think I was in shock and just trying to continue breathing when my hair got lopped off. ;)

@mrsbowieii: How lucky you are to have a cousin who styles hair! I’m sure your hair is going to look great!
@morganmoyer: Unfortunately they did, but I was too much of a weenie to insist they refund me…
@golferbee: Awesome! Laura is my stylist for the wedding day, and she is ah-mazing!
@Miss Brooch, @Miss Elephant: Thanks, ladies! :D
@Juacvdo: Oh my gosh, yes. I felt like I was 5 years old walking out of the salon with those boing-boing curls! I can’t pull them off at all.
@Whimsical.Sprite: Seriously. One shot to get it right is quite a bit of pressure–both on us and on the stylist!
@Varessa: OMG - you poor thing! I would have flipped out if anyone chemically permed my hair. Glad you were able to get it fixed!
@Mrs. Pin Cushion: Thanks! I ended up having to track down specific people to ask about their haircut experience(s) because Yelp wasn’t reliable for me, either (the “oops” was from a highly rated Yelp salon)!

Gorgeous hair in that last photo! Can’t wait for the deets.

Finding a good, consistent salon has been a life’s search for me. A little anxious about my wedding hair since I booked the hairstylist without doing a trial first.
