Mrs. Prairie Dog's Picture
Mrs. Prairie Dog, Cincinnati Age and Occupation: 24, Program Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, PhD/Biomedical Engineer Engagement Date: December 18, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Glendale Lyceum About Me: I'm a pilgrim soul of a girl with a house full of books and a coffee addiction that could slay Juan Valdez. My life is a whirl of grammar correction, good music, glue-gunning, and two pets named Hazel and Winston Churchill. I'm marrying my high school boyfriend in a formal-ish spring affair, roughly themed: "Elizabeth Bennet crashes a party co-hosted by Jay Gatsby and Cath Kidston, and loves it."
About Mrs. Prairie Dog

Guys, I hit a slump a few weeks ago—a deep pothole of wedding apathy. My well of inspiration ran dry, and my back-up reserves of motivation were busy elsewhere. When I finally confessed this rut to an engaged coworker, she said, “Oh, that happened to me too, about three months out. You’ll snap out of it.”

I doubted it. Chalk it up to planning fatigue, to work stress, I don’t know. But I couldn’t bring myself to do anything related to our wedding, nor could I cobble together any details-related writing for you. Because, um, there would have to be details to write about them.

Then, somehow, the clouds parted this weekend—literally and figuratively—and panels of sunshine filtered in. I could smell spring for the first time—the season wherein I marry my love—and, indeed, I felt renewal. The reason for my stagnation seemed so clear—I’m far enough in the process to have all the big stuff done, but it seems too far away for the tiniest details.

So I started small—non-committal—by painting a big frame (a fauxtobooth prop), and it felt good to do something with immediate gratification. The frame was wood. Now it is blue-painted wood. Progress. Then I watched Emma while making a wedding to-do list. Please note that I did not use this time to actually do anything for the wedding. Just to craft a list pretty enough that maybe I won’t want to cry when I see it.

From there, I searched for table number ideas. None sang to me. But just then, Pdog called to me to hold a piece of PVC pipe while he finished up the fauxtobooth. Seeing it come to life—exactly as I’d imagined—made me want to work more on it. Then, leaving the room, an object on my coffee table struck lightening into my table number brainstorm. Somehow, one weekend later, everything on the above list exists, in at least a draft form. The real list is much longer, of course, but those are getting checked off too.

So, babies, I’m back in business, although my most recent check marks left me without my sparkliest trappings. My dress is undergoing the first round of alterations (and it still fits, and I love it even more than I remembered). Also, my engagement ring is with the designer who’s making my wedding band. There is no white gown in my possession, and my finger is bare, but I’m feeling more and more bridal everyday. Finally.

Have you hit a planning slump? How did you get your second wind?

Yay, you’re back. :) I’m not a DIY bride as I have no skillz but I hear you about being in the slump. I stopped wedding planning and hoped that everything will magically get done. Since that didn’t happen, I need to find a videographer and get my e pics done by this month…ahhhh! :)

Great job on getting a draft on your to do list.

Sometimes, when I am in a slump, I put things on my to do list like “take a shower” or “eat lunch” just so I can have more things to cross off! It helps me get back into being productive, little by little. I also use gelly roll pens to make my lists colorful and pretty!

yep, happened to me to at 3 months. I just couldn’t find the motivation to accomplish anything having to do with our wedding. Then on Friday, it was like “BAM!” I was back in the game. Full steam ageah! I got 3 different projects done this weekend. Glad you are back!

Pdog - I love you for posting this. I think we’re date twins (?) and I’m in the slump right now. I did invitations this past weekend (…2 weeks late), and it just wasn’t fun anymore.

I’m so over it, and I’m glad I’m not the only one. I had a huge freak out when I made our big to-do list, and there were more items on it than days until the wedding.

I’m crossing my fingers for my clouds to part. Glad you made it through!

I hit that slump in the last few weeks. I think I’ve pushed through it though.

Yay for getting out of the wedding doldrums!

I’ve been in the wedding slump before (with such a long engagement I wasn’t too surprised). Glad to see you’re getting through it!

I love your to do list. It does look more manageable when it’s pretty (versus my random scribbles on a dozen post-it notes around my desk)! Glad you made your way out of the slumps!

I had the slump too.. but more out of frustration than anything else. I can’t organise my programs, because we need to do the pre-wedding session before our priest meeting. I can’t organise the favours or the tables or the escort cards because we don’t have RSVP’s back yet. *banging head on wall* I’m glad you got started!

I’m definitely in the middle of a slump. With less than three months I feel like I’ve been eating and breathing wedding since we got engaged. Add on craziness at work, a month full of busy weekends and my motivation to come home think wedding has slowly drained away. I’m hoping spring break (which is in two weeks….weeee!) will be the spring to put me back into wedding mode.

I’m not in a slum right now, but I’ve been in one and am afraid the next one is right around the corner! I think that, no matter how wonderful it is to plan a wedding, it simply takes too much energy and sometimes we need to take a break and regroup to be ready to tackle it again!

I know how you feel! I was the same way ever since two weeks ago and then it was like something clicked. I have accomplished 5/6 projects within the last two weeks! I’m soo excited seeing the finished products. It makes me want to do it more and more. i want to stay this motivated and organized:)

You’re back! I was wondering where you’d wandered off to. Should’ve been looking over my shoulder because we were in the same place! The pressing weight of the must-do’s has lifted and I’m starting to see things come together. It’s so rewarding I’ve been propelled to work on more more more projects. But there’s not enough time in the day. Stupid work.

Everyone hits that slump. A couple months before our wedding it took a force of nature to get me motivated but then one day it just clicked and I started whipping out projects again.

I’ve been in the slump since December… my fiance has been doing more work than me since he took over the invites.
