Crazy for Bouts: Part I

March 15th, 2011 @ 1:00 pm by Mrs. Crepe

You know that DIY wedding project you couldn’t wait to tackle the second you got engaged? For most of us it’s the invitations, for others it’s favors. For me, it was most definitely boutonnieres.

I loved this project because I only really need to make a few and we have a tiny wedding party so it was an easy one to tackle. I also liked how this could be done earlier and checked off the list of to do’s. Plus, how cute are vintage millinery flowers?! I went to Tinsel Trading Co. for supplies. Commence gratuitous product shots! I just can’t get over how charming these flowers are.

I was also able to pick up a few rolls of ribbon from their clearance section.

Cutest flower in the bunch!

Cherry blossoms..

.. and sweet peas.

I made a few versions since I had plenty of supplies but then I couldn’t decide if they were garden-party-cute or just too girly. So I put them aside. After about two months, I looked at them again and told myself to stop being so indecisive. They ARE cute! And our wedding IS girly. Am I really going to try to fight that with MANLY bouts? Nope.

As I surveyed the naked little unfinished posies, I decided the smaller ones would be for the groomsmen and I would give the larger flower bunches to MIL Crepe and Mama Crepe for them to wear.

Here’s a quickie tutorial I made for the smaller bouts.

Crazy for Bouts: Part I : wedding diy flowers nashville tutorial 5525538 a quick how to (weddingbee ref)

1. I took two or three flat flowers (in my case, the sweet peas) and held them together.

2. & 3. Then I put the cherry blossom on top of the sweet peas and used the blue bud’s wire stem to wrap all the flowers together at the base of the flower heads.

4. I bent the cherry blossom’s wire stem and curled it around a toothpick to create a coil.

5. Finally, using the blue bud’s wire, I wrapped the rest and secured it all with floral tape.

I’ll be back with how I ended up finishing these with ribbon. If you’re looking to make your own bouts, you should totally go for it. It’s a small and easy project to tackle, as far as wedding projects go. I hope my tutorial helps!

This totally helps! We wanted some simple boutonnieres for our ushers (my cousins) in addition to the groomsmen ones. The florist wanted to charge us $13 a piece for them. I was like… uh, no, I’ll make ‘em myself, thankyou!

Wow, your bouts look fab. If I knew I could make them look like that then I would definitely try, but I can only imagine mine coming out like a failed kindergarten art project! lol
