About Mrs. Cotton Candy

Yummy Yummy in My Tummy!

March 15th, 2011 @ 2:01 pm by Mrs. Cotton Candy

Finding a caterer has by far been the most difficult wedding task we’ve encountered. We knew we wanted simple comfort food, preferably of the Mexican variety. Easy peasy, right? Yeah, not so much. Many of the catering companies we reached out to either declined to work with a small party like ours or required a minimum order that we were unable to reach. I quickly became discouraged, handed the task to my mom, and proceeded to ignore it for next month.

Lucky for me, I have a resourceful mother. She managed to get me a referral for a local restaurant that specializes in food from the Yucatan region in Mexico, which just so happens to be the region that my mother’s from, and they offered special-events catering! Now before I go on, allow me to share with you the tastiness that is Yucatan food. The food is a delicious mix of Mexican, Lebanese, and Mayan cuisines. It is unlike any other Mexican food, and it’s the cuisine that I grew up enjoying. Needless to say, we were all excited at the prospect of finding a caterer that could provide authentic Yucatan food for our wedding.

Since the restaurant was local, we decided to head over for a Sunday lunch with the family to see if the food was authentic and get the seal of approval from Mom. The food was amazing; we feasted on cochinita, pibil, kibis, and panuchos, and everything was perfect.

I called up the catering manager the next day and had a pleasant conversation with her regarding our event and possible menu options. She seemed more than willing to work with our small guest count and budget and was genuinely excited about our event. The catering weight had been lifted off my shoulders, and I was doing a happy dance! I ended my conversation with the caterers with the understanding that I would follow up with her the following week to nail down menu details and sign a contract. All was good in the Cotton Candy household—we had a caterer!

I never talked to the restaurant again. Call after call on my part went unanswered and none of my messages were ever returned. Sad doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt after being dissed by yet another caterer. They weren’t just another caterer; they were the perfect caterer for us, and they dissed us—they dissed us hard.

I’m not going to lie to you, friends. Ugly tears were shed over our lost caterer, and I was less than enthusiastic to begin my search again, but I did and we eventually found another caterer that we both love. Hive, say hello to Soho Taco!

Soho Taco isn’t what you would typically consider wedding food, which is OK in our book. They are a catering company that specializes in Mexican tacos with a gourmet twist. For our wedding, we’ll be going with their premium package, which includes our choice of two meats and two seafoods, grilled veggies, beans, rice, assorted salsa, and guacamole. We’ve also added mini-burritos and chile rellenos for our cocktail hour, an assortment of aqua frescas and Mexican sodas, and bartending service.

I’m really happy with our final catering decision. The caterers will be serving tacos for a total of three hours, which we hope will contribute to the party atmosphere of our wedding, and the cost per person is just right for our budget!

Tell me, hive, did you get burned by a vendor only to end up with a better deal?

Most vendors wouldn’t return my emails (either because they didn’t take me seriously or they figured I didn’t hold the pocketbook). Therefore, I turned most vendor conversations over to my parents. It amazes me how fast vendors are willing to speak to “the parents” rather than the bride. Which is hilarious to me because I’M the one who is going to be paying for the majority of things, not my parents, but most vendors didn’t realize that and gave me the cold shoulder. Needless to say, they didn’t get my business…or any part of my pocketbook. ;-)

*squee* OMG I love that you are doing Mexican food. We found a caterer/restaurant who specialized in Mexican food. She is even going to do smaller portions so it’s more like a tapas party. And there might even be a tres leches cake in it for me! :-P

We used a cater that cooked on site and we had tacos and enchiladas for dinner and taquitos and fresh fruit for apps. I thought it was pretty much not wedding food but we both love mexican food and it was perfect. And the price per person was amazing! It was seriously $4000 less total than then next lowest priced caterer and $4000 was more than 1/2 my budget! yipes!! It’s gonna be great and I too think it really livened up the party/celebration feeling. We didnt want a sit down format to break it all up. Totally awesome :)

I’m so sorry to hear about the other caterer. I was in your position with a vendor who I spoke with for months, and even met. He ended up not responding to my many calls & emails, and I had to move on.

Wow, that looks so yummy!!
I got burned. My make up artist cancelled on me two days before and I was freaking out. A friend of a friend stepped in to save the day, did it for free, and did a wonderful job. Everything happens for a reason =)

Wow, that’s unbelievable that the first restaurant wouldn’t get back to you. However, those gourmet tacos look amazing! I’d love to dig into those at a wedding. :)

I would have been so bummed about the first caterer, too. The tacos look incredible, though - yum!

Tacos mean more mingling and dancing. The food looks delish!! I wish food carts and delicious Mexican food were more common in our area. I get a little jellie sometimes…

I love Mexican food and I love Lebanese food. Have never tried Mayan food but something tells me that I would really really love Yucatan food! Will try to see if I can find a restaurant around here that specializes in that…
I am sorry you got burned like that, it’s happened to me too and it’s really crappy when you think everything is settled and then it’s not!
But, as @Glowing Bride: said, everything does happen for a reason and I think the gourmet taco vendor you have is fantastic!!!

I am so sorry about those vendors!! I had the same problem with several caterers. It was VERY frustrating to say the least. I decided to wait and just see if I could get the nerve to search again closer to my wedding date.
Luckily, I went to a bridal show and a venue/caterer was there with samples!! And they had the most delish chicken salad. (I have to let you know that I am a major chicken salad snob. I grew up eating Amish chicken salad which I am convinced is the ONLY good kind out there!)
I am jealous that you are having tacos at your wedding. No one else thought it was a good idea to have to have them because my FI is so messy. :(
Congrats on finding the perfect caterer for you!!!
