Some married people will tell you their wedding day was the best day of their lives. And some “engageds” look forward to theirs in the same way. Others will tell you that your wedding day will be the best day of your life: magical, iconic, pivotal, the culmination of months (or a lifetime, for some) of planning. Maybe a bit too much pressure, huh?
Luckily, for those who aren’t so sure how they feel about this “best day of your life” business, there’s another camp. The (resoundingly refreshing) people who say that, while your wedding day will be wonderful no matter what goes wrong, it doesn’t have to be the best day of your life, and it’s perfectly OK if it isn’t.
If you were wondering, I fall into that second camp. In fact, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that, so far, the best day of my life has been the day after our wedding. All the drama was over. There were no more guests to house, family and friends (love you guys!) to entertain, or crafts to DIY. No more vendors to prod, money to bleed, obstacles to overcome.
Dorky photo from the day after our wedding (and the first time my engagement ring has been seen on Weddingbee!)
We woke up (slightly hungover) in our hotel room at the San Jose, showered, packed up the car, checked out, and headed to a leisurely and private breakfast at a taco place down the street. We then drove home and spent the day lounging, blissfully reminiscing about the previous day, packing for our honeymoon. Since our wedding was on a Friday and our flight didn’t leave until Sunday, we had all day Saturday to just bask in the glow of our newlywed-ness.

Since our flight left from DFW, we loaded up the car and headed to Fort Worth on Saturday evening, listening to our wedding playlist that the Dude had thoughtfully burned onto a CD. On the way, we stopped at our favorite fast food burger place, Braum’s, for dinner. Perfect guilty-pleasure honeymoon food. We then found out the Dude’s cousin, who we were planning on staying with that night, had gotten the dates mixed up and was in Oklahoma. Oops! So we “had” to find a hotel. So sad for us, haha. We drove into downtown Fort Worth and booked a room at a beautiful historic hotel.
Our hotel room in Fort Worth
It was late by this time and we were completely exhausted, but we headed out grab a drink or two. We found a cool, underground bar with an elevator entrance and had a couple cozy cocktails before heading back to our hotel room for the night.
The next day, getting ready for our flight to Europe
None of it was planned. It all just came about organically, and it was perfect. It didn’t hurt that we were about to embark on a two-week European honeymoon!
Who knows what other future dates may eclipse this one in terms of greatness. The day I quit my job to strike out as a freelancer? When our first child is born? Some other random day that I haven’t even conceived of yet?
For me, all the planning was worth it; I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding day. But I’m still saying the day after was better.
Was your wedding day the best day of your life? Or if you’re not married yet, do you feel like there’s pressure for your wedding day to be the best day ever?
