Mrs. Cotton Candy, Riverside, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Field Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 34, Process Server Engagement Date: July 5, 2007 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Riverside Art Museum About Me: I’m a girl in love with her best friend planning a small mid-century modern inspired wedding that’s been a long time coming. I love all things design, sewing, flea markets, and a good book. I’ve been known to swoon over a well-designed chair and often find myself craving a new addition to my chair collection regardless of the lack square footage in our home. I’m Mexican American girl who hates all things spicy but loves her rowdy Mexican family and her Latin roots. My wedding muses may not be your typical wedding superstars, but with a lot of DIY, a dash of offbeat style, and lots of love and laughs, Mr. Cotton and I plan to create a day that is unmistakably us.

Stringing Our Guests Along

March 16th, 2011 @ 2:10 pm by Mrs. Cotton Candy

I’m a big fan of bold table numbers that add to the tablescape rather than blending into the decor. Table numbers like these really inspired me to create numbers that would not only guide our guests to their assigned tables, but also add to the overall design of our reception.

I took inspiration from the two images above and Todd Oldham’s string-art project in Handmade Modern and mocked up these.

Although the design is more ’70s inspired, I’m really happy with the overall look of them and think they would fit in nicely on our tables. My only concern is the overall height of the numbers. When placed on the easel, the numbers are taller than or equal in height to our vases. If I want to remove the easel I need to come up with a way for them to stand up on their own since the frame stand is covered by fabric.

Hive, I need your help! Should I keep them on the easel, or get rid of the easels and have them stand alone? Any idea how I can get them to stand up without the easel?

Love these. Maybe a tutorial when you get a chance? As for my opinion, I like no easel if you’re sure they won’t fall over.

I love these!! So much fun. I like the easel, but I think propping them up against the vases will work fine too.

I personally like them without the easel better. Can you get anything that you can fit it into? What I’m thinking of is something similar to a coin stand where the groove is cut out on the bottom of the frame would fit into it. Not sure if that would clutter the table up or not…..

Can you nail a peg into the bottom of the frame so it extends horizontally in the back about 3 inches?

I’m in the minority here. I kinda dig the easel. But I think they look great either way so you can’t go wrong here!

I’m with Lox, I like the easel. It makes them stand out more. Which they should, because those things are FREAKING AMAZING! Seriously cool.

I like them without the easel. Have no idea how to get them to stand-up on their own though.

I *heart* making string art! Oh goodness, this project takes me back! I’m with the crowd that prefers no easel.

Maybe you could put an easel backing on it similar to a photo frame to prop it up? Like this one:

How about a Popsicle stick “easel”? With two sticks in a downward “V” and one pointing away from the number, and attached to the back? I’m not sure if this would support the weight of the number though.. They look great by the way!

…Or cutting down the easel you already have? So that it rests on the table and isn’t elevated?

You could probably (carefully) get two nails about an inch and a half long and tap them into the back two bottom corners at just a slight angle to hold them up on their own, plus it kinda matches the pins/nails in the front holding the string. You could even wind some string between the two nails to really bring it together.

You are CRAZY talented. All of your posts make me want to try a little harder haha. I like the option without the easel, personally. It looks very clean. But beautiful either way :)

The string and nail signs!!! I have those in my inspiration folder and *really* wanted to do them, but Mr P says no and they don’t exactly go with our aesthetic. So happy to see another bee doing them!!

Love love love it without the easel…the wood takes away from the architecture of the string art and the creamy deliciousness of the milk glass!
