I'm a lazy perfectionist and eternal sorority girl who enjoys running, crafting, string cheese, good beer, and bad reality TV. We are planning a Big Fat Italian/Sicilian/Polish wedding filled with DIY details and are expecting 300 +/- 50 guests. She Thinks That The Venue is Odd for a Vintage Garden Party, but is Tripping on LSD, so She Doesn't Really Care." Yes, I am the Dickens of themes.
About Mrs. Biscuit

I’m on a (Fail) Boat.

March 17th, 2011 @ 4:22 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

The DIY fails just keep on coming. This one was particularly hilarious, so I felt I needed to share it with the hive.

Remember how I wanted to make pretty tissue paper pom napkin rings? Well, my myriad of bulk paper came in finally and I decided to give it a whirl. I followed Martha’s instructions, but uh…something happened.

I looked at Mr. Biscuit and desperately said, “We can’t use these, can we?” Hoping he’d validate my project saying it wasn’t too bad.

He didn’t.

It looked pretty abysmal, and not even Mr. Biscuit (aka someone who cares 0 about our decor) could let those paper things sit at our tables.

I wasn’t going to give up, though. Too many brides have made those poms for them to be a DIY nightmare. Then I realized what was going on. I folded the paper the wrong way. Yup, I have a degree in engineering and I can’t read directions. I’m awesome.

And now, in the interest of full disclosure, I’ll show you my fails and my final “OK to throw on a napkin” project (photos are personal):

Did anyone else have issues reading DIY tutorial instructions?

uh, yes and it was a Martha project as well. Sometimes her directions are just not very clear. Yes, I am totally blaming it all on her! ;)

I had a mild Martha fail… I tried to make glittered seashells and they turned out just kind of meh. Still used them, though!

Probably didn’t help that I waited until two nights before the wedding with 50 billion other things going on to do it even though I had the materials for months before hand.

reading martha is sometime like building an ikea bookshelf. it seems REALLY easy but some how becomes overly complicated.

kudos to you for figuring out what was going on!

Didnt mean to laugh at your faile poms but they are sadly cute. And the confusing directions are just part of her scheme to make us feel inadequate and incompetent! But you caught on - clever girl.

muahahaha. those tissue poms are pure evil! it took me a few tries before they started to look like a 4th cousin of martha’s exquisite tissue poms…and that was good enough for me. and your poms? i think they’re super. way to go, Miss B. :)

Biscuit! I can’t figure out what you did to those poor poms, but I’m mad enough at Martha Stewart that I’m willing to blame it all on her. Her crayon hearts were such a horrible fail for me that I don’t even have pictures of the sadness. (Although my friend assures me her 4 year old can do it. Thanks friend!)

Oh no! You look so sad in that photo. :( I think your final poms are adorable (and such a pretty shade of purple)!

@Miss Lox: I think of you whenever I write my DIY fail posts! Oh, and um, maybe a child prodigy 4 year old could do it. And…you can drink beer. Let’s see a four year old try do THAT. He’d totally get arrested.

I’m glad others have had difficulty with Martha’s instructions! The fail boat is more fun if it’s more like a fail cruise!

Your posts always make me smile. I love how honest - and funny! - you are about the whole process. I’m glad you got the poms to work. I think DIY instructions are less a question of who is reading them than who is writing them. Maybe they need an engineering degree. ;)

Oh, I’m right there with you. I was going to make fabric poms. So simple! Until you try to cut out perfect, symmetrical circles out of fabric.

I was not about to spend a couple of hundred bucks on some special cutting device. So after an afternoon of aggravation, I decided to scrap that. I’m going with fresh hydrangea or mums in my milk glass vases instead.

Yup, I have a degree in engineering and I can’t read directions. I’m awesome.

Hahaha… I love it. We are always saying the exact same thing!! Between the two of us we have three graduate degrees and we can’t figure out the simplest of things!
