Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

I’m Not Super Organized

March 17th, 2011 @ 11:33 am by Mrs. Magic

I love organizational devices and strategies, and I really, truly love the idea of being organized. It’s just not for me. It’s not in the cards. The fates are against me. And so on and so forth.

I'm Not Super Organized : wedding chapel hill wedding planner Office http://www-static.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/15/office.jpg

This is not what my office looks like.

That’s where a day of coordinator comes in.

Now, actually, I know a lot of women who are very organized. My mom, my step mom, my FMIL, and my work mom are all very organized ladies who could probably run a rehearsal and make sure the decor is set up properly, and the cake is there, and whatever else needs to be done is done. (I’m so disorganized, I’m not even sure what else there is to do!) But the problem is…I might, OK, WILL be a big ball of stress and sometimes that translates to bitchiness (in some individuals, I have heard), and the last thing I want to do on my wedding day is snap at a loved one.

Or slap a loved one. Yeesh, that would be super bad.

Sometimes, I think I have a tendency to take out my frustration on my loved ones. I think probably all humans do this. I am trying to be better. But all in all, I think it is wiser for me to hire a professional, someone who is familiar with the process, who I will not have to worry about directing and will make our wedding run smoothly. Oh, and since she isn’t someone I am super friendly with, I likely won’t snap at her…I save those fun moments for those I love. Sweet of me, ain’t it?

I interviewed a few DOCs. All three offered similar packages, but their prices varied from $900 to $1,400. I went to a bridal show to meet one, and I just was not that into her. She did not take the lead in asking me questions, but rather I had to gather information from her. The exchange was a bit socially awkward, and so even though she was the least expensive, I immediately nixed her.

Next, I talked to a lovely DOC whose package was $1,200. She was friendly and personable on the phone, and I felt like we would have clicked in person. But, she had never heard of the caterer we are likely going with, and she had never done a wedding at our site. Plus, she has the same name as me. I kept imagining confusion on the day of. People would say, “Ask Miss Magic if the pumpkins go on the right or the left,” and they wouldn’t know whether to ask me or her! She was an OK option, but I kept looking.

Finally, I spoke with Erin of Erin McLean Events. She’s the most expensive of the ones I contacted. (Granted, just three…I got lazy and decided a sample selection was all I needed. Go ahead, take away my Budget Bride membership card…again.) However, she was very personable on the phone. She has done three weddings at our site and knows all about it! AND, she has worked with our caterers before…she was raving about them and their servers! When I met her in person, I found her laid back but efficient. She has a lot of great ideas.

Here’s the best part, though!

I kept asking her, “OK, I’m not sure if this is included in the DOC package, but can I talk to you about the layout of the ceremony and reception? Or will there be an extra fee for that? What about colors? Is there an extra consultative fee for that?”

Other coordinators I had talked to had told me that their packages included only weekend-of services. If I wanted to discuss layout or colors or anything like that, there would be an extra consultative fee, which was usually $75 an hour. Erin seemed to think this was whack, and I totally agree.

I'm Not Super Organized : wedding chapel hill wedding planner Crack I http://www-static.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/15/crack-i.jpg

That is whack. Just like crack.

So I plan on signing the contract and putting the deposit down this week. To me, this is like happiness insurance on our wedding day. And that, to me, is priceless.

Are you organized? Do you think it’s time I man up and admit that my budget wedding is, um, going a little over budget? No? Good, me neither!

Glad you found one but wow, that is pricey. I live near a city and my officiant/DOC whole package was $700. She also works with me 2 mos out etc.

But if you trust her, then it’s worth it.

DOCs in Seattle are super pricey too, at least the ones I looked into. And I agree - peace of mind is worth it! :)

The DOC I found in the Boston area charges $800, and she’s been really helpful even three months before the wedding. I found her because she’d done a wedding at my reception venue (a Chinese wedding restaurant) recently. She is Chinese, which I am not, but the finace is, and I really needed someone to navigate that. And I needed someone organized, because neither of us are.

I am completely with you regarding being unorganized! If my office looked like that picture I would be in heaven!!!!
Unfortunately, we do not have the money in our budget to hire a DOC, but if we did then I sure would be!

I wound up going with my DOC for similar reasons. She said to IGNORE the list of services and to feel free to ask her to do anything, at all, anytime.

Where do I sign?!

Oh man… I don’t think this makes you give up your budget bride card. I think this grants you an additional “I’m so smart” card. Then again, I hired a DOC for all of the reasons you mentioned and I’ve not been sorry yet. :)

I like to think I’m pretty organized and I still hired a professional to make sure everything is under control on the day of.

Wow…my heart rate shot up like the Space Shuttle when I saw that organized office…that is the ultimate in beauty, eh?

In my role as an officiant, I always ask my couples whether they have a DOC. When their knee-jerk is “Oh, we can’t afford that, so my Mom/Aunt/Cousin Tillie will make sure everything goes well,” I give them my two cents on the value of the DOC and that they can’t afford to NOT find the dough to hire one. A DOC not only keeps the bride and groom’s focus on celebrating and having fun without worry, the vendors are better coordinated and the day goes as smooth as silk. Hiring a DOC, in my opinion, is money VERY well spent.

This: “Oh, and since she isn’t someone I am super friendly with, I likely won’t snap at her…I save those fun moments for those I love. Sweet of me, ain’t it?” —>is so me!
We had plans to hire a wedding planner/coordinator in the beginning of planning but they were sooooo expensive I decided to hold off for a bit. I am so happy I did, because my venue manager functioned exactly like a doc/coordinator and was awesome!

Miss Pain au Chocolat hit the nail on the head. I totally agree! Even though I’m fairly organized, I also hired someone to take everything away from me the day of.

It is so important to have a great relationship with your wedding coordinator! She needs to be someone you trust and you feel comfortable enough with to tell her how it is, even if it’s not good. My sisters and I have an “interesting” relationship at the best of times, for example I like to be early to most things, my little sister has no problem being 10-15 minutes late to most things so on the wedding day I don’t want to have to be the one nagging her to get going and that we have to be somewhere, I am going to be leaving that up to my wedding planner and I plan on being able to focus on more important things.
