Mrs. Lioness, Atlanta Age and Occupation: 25, Physical Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Attorney Engagement Date: August 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Anthony’s Fine Dining About Me: I’m a Southern girl with New England roots. I say "wicked" and "y’all" in the same sentence and I like to drink sweet tea with my lobster. Mr. Lion and I are both former Floridians now living in Atlanta, which fortunately is still SEC country...Go Gators! We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!

License to Wed

March 17th, 2011 @ 11:57 am by Mrs. Lioness

Mr. Lion and I recently visited the Fulton County courthouse here in Atlanta in order to obtain our marriage license. Yep, a license. From the courthouse. It all sounded very complicated and official. Very grown-up. Ick.

I was a little concerned because the requirements to apply for a marriage license in Georgia were somewhat vague. I rely on the internet for many things in my life. I love being able to come to a site with a simple question and easily find a simple answer (have I mentioned how much I love you, Hive?). Unfortunately, important sites like county courthouses can be difficult to navigate, horribly disorganized, etc. A simple Google search revealed that Mr. Lion and I both had to show up to apply, and that we needed some form of identification. It seemed a little too easy, and I was skeptical.

We arrived at the Fulton County courthouse and Mr. Lion, who spends a great deal of time in court as an attorney, led the way to the marriage license office. We were greeted with this sign:

Really? Firearms and marriage licenses in the same office? Wow. Shotgun wedding jokes ensued.

We waited around for about half an hour. We had way too much fun people-watching, especially considering we made up a game called “Marriage License or Firearm License.” We also enjoyed gazing upon the beautiful decor:

But apparently not commas?

We finally received our marriage license applications. They were pretty straightforward; name, date of birth, place of birth, etc. One question kind of caught us off guard, though!

Apparently in the state of Georgia it is legal to marry your first cousin. Who knew?

Sometimes, what appears to be really intimidating ends up being pretty ridiculous in reality. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just wave a magic wand and turn all of life’s intimidating moments into something ridiculous? Or, should I say, riddikulus?

Have you applied for your marriage license yet? What’s the process like where you live?

In Texas we had to raise our right hands and swear that we were not related by birth or marriage. Talk about romantic…

Also, like hosannac, I found that comment quite hilarious!

Okay this post had so many of my favorite references in it, I don’t even know where to start! Hyperbole and a Half? Grammar jokes? Neville’s Boggart?

You’re a girl after my own heart, Lioness! And congrats on your marriage license!

That is great. We haven’t applied for ours yet, but I am curious how it will go.

I saw a preview for the Tyra Show last week where first cousins were married and the wife called him her “cusband.” LOLLLLLLLLLLL.

We’re getting ours in Georgia too, though not Fulton County- Chatham. Hopefully it’s just as easy!

I loved reading this–I flashed back to our Marriage License Application in Gwinnett County, GA. There, too, we were directed to the Marriage and/or Firearms Licenses. And we also discussed the “Are you related” question. I can only hope we’ll be lucky enough to have you recount your experience when/if you change your name at the DMV. Talk about fun people-watching! No spouse needed but you do need to be able to keep a straight face while texting.:)

This post really made me LOL as I have relatives in Georgia. (Am not married to them ;-) ). Thanks for brightening my day :D .

I love the “Marriage License or Firearms License” game. Hey, why not just get both at once?? ;-)

In Louisiana (where I also have relatives…we are everywhere in the South) the “you can’t be related to your spouse” rule has an Exception for marriages occurring before….1965.

LOL WHAT. I can “kind of” understand that these things happened back in like, previous centuries, it was a different time back then, etc, but….1965?? That’s…not that long ago. LOLS :-) .

Glad u had a good experience!

OMG, I am trying so hard not to burst out laughing in my cube. I only hope they have a similar sign when we get our marriage license so we can play the marriage or firearm game!

We had the “are you related?” question in West Virginia. Since I’m from Virginia, lots of jokes ensued.

It’s really the “and/or” that makes that sign.

Those signs were too funny! I’m really happy that you can apply for your license online in York, Pa. You have to pick it up in person but it cuts so much time out of the process.

Congrats on getting your license! I wonder what odd signage we’ll encounter when we go to pick ours up…

Hahahaha. The first cousin thing reminded me of Arrested Development. I have no clue how to get a marriage license, but I should figure it soon!
