Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Hair Trial Success (Almost)!

March 20th, 2011 @ 6:45 pm by Mrs. Brooch

I know I said I wanted a side pony, but I changed my mind! I love this low up do my stylist pulled together on a whim when I went for my first hair trial and now I need your opinions!

Hair Trial Success (Almost)! : wedding arlington hair trial 11 1

I had about a dozen pictures of a dozen different hairstyles—making my indecision so very obvious—but somehow we managed (she managed, I should say) to create something fun and simple that will be beautiful on my big day!

I told my friend Jumana (the stylist) to do whatever she wanted. All I cared about was that it was up, low (versus on the top of my head), and secure. For me, there’s nothing worse than fiddling with my hair and I don’t want to have that problem on our wedding day.

She got it secure, all right!

This next picture is my favorite because of how elegant my hair looks! Honestly y’all, I felt like Jackie Onassis! I felt sophisticated, yet stylish! That’s how I should feel, right?

I can’t emphasize to you enough the importance of a hair trial.

I had honestly thought about skipping one and coming up with something the day of the wedding, but I’m so glad I didn’t do that! What a nightmare! The thing is, a wedding skews your priorities a little like I mentioned earlier and you might not know what you want to do to your hair; the hair trial will fix all of that.   It gives you a chance to see yourself how you will be seen in your wedding pictures.

So, the other really good reason to have a hair trial is for those brides wearing a veil! Did anyone else have trouble securing the veil (either at their trial or at their wedding)? We had a few problems with it, but I think we finally figured it out, and man, the veil made all the difference in the world!

Tip: Don’t take your actual veil to the salon. This one belongs to one of my step mother’s friends who was married last April. She let me borrow it for the trial since mine is cathedral length, which made it way easier to work with!

I don’t know what’s up with my facial expression!

Pretty, pretty! I love this next shot!

The hair trial was definitely a success and mostly because it gave me time to get used to the look that I’ll have on our wedding day. You know, the look I’ll have in all those pictures! At the salon I was all smiles. I exclaimed over and over “It’s perfect,” but a few hours later I started to wonder.

The Almost Part: I LOVE the back. How could I not? I’m just not sure about the front. The side swoop was a little too… I don’t know what the word is… mature? I felt like I looked older than I really am and I don’t like that. I want to look youthful! Come on cause 25 years old is still youthful, right?

Well, just in case you don’t understand what I mean, I took these pictures in the bathroom stall at Best Buy (yeah… we went to Best Buy after my hair trial even though I looked like I should have been going to the Kennedy Center)!

Should I go with something different in the front?

I think a bump like this would be cute and a lot more fun:

We could also do a side part like this:

We could even have some pieces hanging down in the front:

What do you guys think? How did your hair trial go?

I think your trial is stunning as-is. I’m with you, Miss Brooch…I also hate fiddling around with my hair. If the low up-do felt beautiful and secure, then go with that.

If you’re not planning to wear the veil during the reception, perhaps some sparkly accents to go among the curls, or a really beautiful silk flower tucked behind one of your ears would give it a little extra something.

I love it Miss Brooch! You look so sophisticated. I think some sideswept bangs might help the style look more youthful and age appropriate.

Beautiful! I love the Jessica Alba “bump” that you showed above, but that’s just a personal preference of mine. I always liked my updos to look a bit disheveled haha! I’m actually due for a hair trial, but I’m in the process of growing out a pixie cut so my hair is a DISASTER right now. I’m trying to let it grow out a bit for the wedding so it can do something, so we’ll have to see!!

Hi,

Just saw your tweet.

The back is stunning!

The side swoop fits with the back - but maybe your hairdresser could have a smaller amount of a ’swoop maybe even bring it forward a little more - Hepburn style and take the rest back with a little height.

Not sure if you are planning on having a tiara but that will also change the look too.

Hope this helps!

Congrats

Clare x

I am a huge fan of the sideswept bang. Even though I think your do looks perfect as is (so elegant!) if the front is bothering you I’d suggest the sideswept bang as your saving grace. No matter what you do, you’re always gorgeous though. :)

Adding some pearls or rinestones would be awesome. I also like a few things hanging down to soften the front, looks better in the pictures. Puff is nice too.

You are so beautiful! I love your hair in the second picture more than I like the first. I think side swept bangs look good on every face shape and are ultimately timeless so you don’t have to worry about your pictures looking dated. Overall, I really like it and I typically don’t care for updos!

You look so beautiful! You could do a braid or a twist in the front. I love the back but I agree that you need a more youthful look in the front. Maybe a fascinator would do the trick?

I like the side bangs idea, and I loooove the back! So fun and kind of whimsical! And my goodness, do you have a STUNNING profile! Gorgeous, lady!

Oh I love the hair. Just think if you were to take it out, you may end up with soft curls.

I LOVE your hair. It’s gorgeous. I think the side swept bang or bump would also look wonderful. I think which style you choose might depend on how formal/casual your dress is. The first style screams elegance and would look great with a really formal gown, but the other styles would complement any look. Either choice, your hair is so pretty and will look fabulous!

I like the way it looks in pictures, but if you’re not 100% happy with it, my next choice would be the swoopy bangs a la Carrie Underwood!

Your hair looks great!! I agree with the others that said changing up the front might depend on the look of your dress.

I think either the bump, a side swept bang, or a braid in the front (if that is your style) could make the whole thing more youthful. I totally feel you on that. But the back is gorgeous! You are going to be ONE STUNNING BRIDE! And now I want a hair trial…stat!

I like the side swoop the most. My bridal hair was very similar to your trial. I told the stylist I wanted something classic and polished - she got it so right!
