Miss Carousel's Picture
Miss Carousel, Dusseldorf, Germany/Garda, Italy Age and Occupation: 29, International Product Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Front End Developer Engagement Date: May 29, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: I’m an American-Italian girl living in Germany with my Belgian fiancé, planning a wedding in Italy. I can’t wait to show our guests the wonderful Lake Garda, Verona, and want our wedding to be a fun filled, charming, day in the life of “La dolce vita.” Mr. C and I love spending time together, and have added wedding related activities to our cooking nights, dance lessons, and road trips. We love sampling restaurants, could listen to Sinatra all day, and are just a tad geeky and into technology. As we want all of our passions to be part of our marriage, what better way to start than by incorporating them in our wedding day?
About Miss Carousel

As I previously wrote, there were a couple of glitches during the process of finding the right theme for us. Then again, it’s not like a theme is really necessary. Nor do I intend to follow mine to the letter now that I have one. But it really helps give a style to all the elements of the wedding and keeps the ideas and the inspiration at bay.

When Mr. Caro and I re-discussed our theme, we started from where we’d left off. We had basically determined that we wanted our colours to be soft and that our wedding keywords were:

  1. Nostalgic
  2. Playful
  3. Charming
  4. Travel
  5. Carnivalesque

We also considered what we had in common and what would describe us as a couple. We started from our geekiness (we’re both a bit geeky), our passion for travel, our interest in historical novels, our love for swing music, and our appreciation for old-style amusement parks.

After some brainstorming and some Googling, we found the basis for all our inspiration: Jules Verne’s collection of novels, Extraordinary Voyages.

Jules Verne’s books (Around the World in 80 Days, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) all feature the romantic Victorian travel theme we love, with some technological geekiness we can relate to. We then discovered the Steampunk genre and started looking into that for inspiration but, although we like it, it’s a tad too far out for us.

Once we had the main inspiration, everything else followed. Here is what we came up with:

Theme definition: Romantic neo-Victorian theme, with some travel and carnivalesque elements

Colours: Ivory, peach, vintage teal / sea foam, copper/brass, red

Recurring elements: Extraordinary Voyages concept and phrase

I love our theme and I can’t wait to see how it will fit with our traditional Italian wedding day!

Did you also go through a brainstorming process to find your theme, or did you know immediately what it would be?

SO PRETTY! I love it! And I think steampunk is super cool and amazing, but I agree, it’s a little much for a wedding. Some subtle gears and clockwork bits would be a nice nod to the genre, but no need to go overboard especially if carnivals are your main focus. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
