Mrs. Pancakes, New York/Costa Rica Age and Occupation: 26, Law School Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Latin American Policy Analyst Engagement Date: March 12, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Casa Punto de Vista About Me: I’m a perfectionist with a big heart. I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. Now, in my final year of law school, we’ll be spending the spring abroad in Amsterdam and planning a DIY, whimsical, detail-filled destination wedding in Costa Rica!

Let's Dish About Mismatched Vintage Dishes :  wedding costa rica decor registry Love2b  {Source: Etsy -$108}

Mr. P and I are soon-to-be a homeless married couple. Right now, we live in an adorable one-bedroom in the center of Amsterdam, overlooking a lovely canal filled with swans and ducks, but come May 2nd we’ll be HOMELESS! The reason I am telling you all this is because I LOVE vintage plates. I am head over heels obsessed with vintage plates. BUT, since we don’t have a home, we really aren’t in a position to accept a lot of traditional gifts. We literally have no idea where we’ll be from May to October but chances are that we’ll be living out of suitcases and a storage unit. (***I would love to be in Latin America, but we may be in NYC, DC or LA.) That being said, we have to be careful about what we buy and what we register for.

One of the most amazing things about living in Amsterdam is the proliferation of antique stores! I spend at least 6 hours a week just wondering through all these trinket-filled stores, running my hands over everything.

So here’s what I’ve decided. I would really love a set of small mismatched vintage plates of our very own. I know other bees have blogged about this in the past, but I can’t help it.

Is this just a passing fad?

There are really two issues at play here. One, I want mismatched vintage plates at our wedding. and two, I want vintage plates of our very own. For many people, I suppose these two things would go hand-in-hand.

1. For the wedding

I did a little research and it looks like there are dozens of UK based companies that rent vintage plates, and only a handful based in the U.S., and NONE that ship internationally (understandably).

This means there is virtually no way we’ll be having vintage plates at our wedding. :(

2. For us

Although, I’m strongly considering collecting our own vintage plates over the next few weeks and shipping them back to the U.S. myself. I recently stumbled across Antiquaria, an amazing online vintage home goods store. I immediately added half of their plates, cake stands and tea cups to our registry. I mean, how amazing is this 5 piece china place setting?!?

So even though our wedding may have to be “vintage plate-less,” perhaps our home won’t!

Do you still love mismatched vintage plates? Do you know about any other places to register for vintage China?

Passing fad or no, I love mismatched vintage plates! I’m so hitting up Antiquaria after we move and settle in!

What have you done, turning me on to Antiquaria!? Love it, and love that you registered for those place settings. It will make fine dining occasions extra special. What’s one day of vintage pretty compared to a lifetime?

Haha, another person who loves plates!!!
I was in the same position - last year hubby & I were living in a cramped apartment in Tokyo and even though I knew we were moving to the States I couldn’t stop buying Japanese ceramics and kitchen stuff! I had to ship it to LA and it was totally worth it. I love that stuff, meal times seem so much more fun!

I adore vintage china! We did mismatched teacups and dessert plates at our wedding, but couldnt keep most of them because freight was too expensive from Nelson to Palmerston North :(

I think you got the better part of the deal finding a vintage place setting registry like Antiquaria (rather than rentals for the day-of you probably wont have time to enjoy). We had the opportunity to inherit not one but three sets of china. For space reasons, we could only keep one.

I’m lucky enough to get all of my grandmother’s china. I’d still like some beautiful mismatched sets though.

Oh–and seeing mismatched china weddings hurts my heart. I thought I’d do this in the beginning, but it’s near impossible unless you have a tiny wedding and live in a city with awesome flea markets. I have neither :(.

There are domestic companies that do vintage rentals. You’re probably just only going to find them in the big cities.

My wedding was last September and we used mismatched china for our place settings and absolutely LOVED it. It took me 2 years to put the collection together, but it was well worth it. Now I rent out my collection for weddings, showers, garden parties, etc. I live in Orange County, CA, but I searched high and low for a rental service. Never found one, at least not one that had beautiful things. Just because something is “vintage”, doesn’t mean it fits in with the style of doing this. 60s and 70s junk is usually mixed in. But I’m really proud of my collection, so much so that I couldn’t stand to break them up and sell them after our wedding.

That’s a facebook page I made for our china! There are pictures from our wedding on there. I would love for you to check it out! :)

I have SO MUCH mismatched china. I collected over 1.5 years of being engaged and couldn’t part with it after we married. No room in our home for all of it — would love to sell it to a bride-to-be who would use it on their wedding day or a rental company that would make it available for brides. I looked everywhere when I was planning and found NOTHING — so had to start collecting it on my own. xx!
