Florism

March 21st, 2011 @ 3:12 pm by Mrs. Hyena

One weekend when Mom Hyena was in town, we made appointments to talk to a few florists, just to get ideas and quotes. This picture sums up everything I wanted in my wedding flowers.

Peonies! Maroon and pink peonies! Perfection! I die! (source)

Unfortunately, I didn’t know anything about flowers prior to getting engaged, so when I saw online that peonies were spring flowers, I said “YESSSSS,” fell in love, and decided there was no other flower for me. Then, when I met with the first florist, she said peonies stopped being in season in Texas around the end of March, and we wouldn’t know until closer to our May wedding whether or not we’d be able to fly some in from somewhere.

Fly them in? What? That costs extra!

Not all hope was lost, though. We still had another appointment! Maybe they would have a solution!

They didn’t. Instead, I was offered two hours of anxiety. Florist 2 not only said peonies were likely unavailable, but said we should come up with a backup plan. However, instead of coming up with a backup plan, she came up with a plan A for a bouquet that was totally different than what I wanted, then told me it would cost $250! What? We were not budgeting very much for flowers, and that definitely fell outside the allotted amount.

The colors in this are exactly what I wanted, but for the flowers themselves I wanted something a little less wild. (source)

Because we were trying to get a lot done in the short time Mom Hyena was in town, we also went to check out cakes and artificial-flower options at Michaels. But I was so overwhelmed and anxious about the florist appointment that I stopped seeing Mom Hyena and Mr. H as helpful, and instead started seeing them as trying to force decisions on me RIGHTTHEN instead of listening to my ideas and taking my time to choose things that will ultimately make me happy instead of stressy.

The main thing I learned from this experience is: When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a step back. Do something not wedding related, even if you only have a short time with your mom before you go back to planning on your own. Take a breather and calm down. Then, if you feel better, dive back in. If you don’t, that’s OK, but it’s better to get nothing done than to make decisions you’ll have to undo later.

Anyone have ideas for reducing stress in planning?

Have you considered garden roses? They look similar to peonies are less expensive and more widely available. I love peonies too but I definitely can’t get them in Sept unless I wanted to ship them as well. So I’m subbing in garden roses.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about taking a step back! I’ve made a few decisions out of sheer panic (or a self-imposed time crunch) and came to regret it later.

I’m also using a lot of garden roses for fluff!

Yes, take a breather! Check out FiftyFlowers.com … I didn’t order from there, but the site helped me figure out flowers I liked, the colors they come in and how to plan my flower budget. Garden or Cabbage roses are a great, affordable choice from peonies. But maybe have 3 or 4 in your bouquet and other that compliment. Good luck! Flowers were my favorite part so I hope it gets better for you too :)

Per stem of garden roses. I’m still in sticker shock.

Well, eating chocolate is the first thing that comes to my mind, but that doesn’t do a lot for the whole fit-in-my-dress issue. I’m finding that I tend to shut down and refuse to make decisions at all. Not exactly helpful . . .

Hmm- My wedding was at the end of April in Texas (in 2009) and I had peonies in my bouquet! My florist said they might not be available, but they turned out great. I also had garden roses, which are VERY similar, and I really loved them. They would be a great substitute.

That’s my stance on decision-making. Stinks that peonies aren’t in season for you in TX. Curious what your florist ends up recommending.

Good for you for stepping back. I’m still not positive on my bouquet, but I think I’m going to do cabbage/garden roses if I can’t get my beloved ranunculus. They add similar peony fluff :).

I hear you! I don’t have a thing for peonies, but I love English roses! When I mentioned this to my florist he smiled and asked me if I was aware of the cost (which of course I wasn’t). Long story short, no English roses for me!

@PopRox: $10 per stem?! Aaaand that is why I am not a big fan of flowers!
@carly: I was told there was some possibility of having peonies, but that they would most likely be unavailable and we’d have to “wait and see.”
@Miss Biscuit: I also love ranunculus!

Oh H! I am so sorry you feel rushed. I NEVER buy anything the same day. I always make myself at least take 48 hours before purchasing.

BTW I am dying to see what flowers you do go with as I am looking for some hot pink ones also. ;)
