Registry Recap

March 21st, 2011 @ 10:14 am by Mrs. Starfish

Registry Recap : wedding newport registry Maya11 source

I’m interrupting our regularly scheduled—OK, randomly scheduled—recaps to talk about our registry. We are hitting the 6 month mark soon, which is totally crazy; time is flying by. Hitting the sixth month mark actually means something…it means registry completion discounts expire.

After six months, you have an idea of how you feel about your registry picks. You also start questioning whether you actually need all those leftover items you went six months without.

I’ve realized there are some items we received that I can’t live without, some items we received but could live with out, some we wish we had registered for, those we almost didn’t register for (but we’re glad we did), and those we haven’t used a lot, but are looking forward to testing out.

I was super picky about what we put on our registry. We don’t have a lot of storage in our house and we plan on being there for a while, so I didn’t want to register for items that would be collecting dust in our attic. Despite that, there are still some items we could have gone with out.

Exhibit A: the blender. We registered for an awesome Kitchen Aid blender. I was on the fence about it, but we talked about making smoothies and shakes. There hasn’t been a shake or smoothie yet. We aren’t shake people, so I’m not quite sure why we started envisioning this. I think part of it had to do with people telling us we didn’t have enough on our registry in certain price points, so we added a few random things that we thought we’d maybe want one day. I also have to admit I liked that it matched our other Kitchen Aid appliances.

Another item that’s on our could have lived without list is the electric knife. Mr. Starfish was so excited for this and we haven’t used it yet. I’m sure we’ll use it on holidays in the future, but for a couple with limited space, I definitely could have gone without this. Mr. Starfish still thinks it’s great.

So there were those items which we thought we’d use, which didn’t happen. Then there were the items we almost didn’t register for, like our coffee maker. Neither of us drink coffee, so we figured, why get one? This has been the most used kitchen appliance since we received it at our shower. Anytime we have people over, we make coffee. So despite our original reservations, this was a great buy.

On the entertaining front, I also wish we had registered for table linens. We didn’t have a table at the time, so we didn’t know what size to get, so we nixed the idea of linens completely and didn’t even look into them. Now months later I’ve been shopping around for linen napkins, a runner, and place mats, all of which could have been included on our registry without knowing our exact table length. I’ve been fixated on the Pottery Barn monogrammed collection and think I may need to purchase these before our completion discount runs out.

We’re still adding to the list (yes, six months later—Pottery Barn lets you add on up until the 6 month mark and you can use the discount on newly added items—Winning!) and we’re still getting around to testing out some of our new(ish) gifts. One item that hasn’t been touched is the crock pot. I’m kind of afraid of it. I didn’t grow up in a house that used one and I find it intimidating. When we registered for it, we had recently been to a friend’s dinner party where she made crock pot pulled pork. It was amazing and I decided we needed a crock pot. I’m still really excited about it, but I just have to get over the intimidation and try it out.

Another item that hasn’t gotten much use is our Kitchen Aid stand mixer, but despite the seldom usage, it’s still a registry all-star in my book. We used this guy to whip up tons of cookies at Christmas and make a ridiculous amount of my mom’s homemade pasta sauce one weekend. So while it doesn’t get much use yet, when it does, it’s amazing!

Another registry all star is our towels. They were by far one of the priciest gifts on our registry. Quite a few people made comments about us registering for expensive towels and only one guest bought any (FYI, I absolutely love this guest). I don’t regret registering for these at all, I’m actually pretty happy we did. We use them every day. They are super soft and high quality. It may seem frivolous to some, but it’s seriously like a little piece of heaven every day. Although I love our Kitchen Aid mixer, we’ve used it twice in 6 months. It cost much more than a few towels, and no one judged us on that.

We actually had many more registry all-stars that I can’t live without. So many, that I may need to go over those in a different post.

Overall, I wish we had included a fourth registry. People told me it was too much, so I kept it to three. Then people told me we didn’t have enough on our registries, but we had registered for everything we wanted from those stores. I ended up registering for random things, which aren’t getting much use. I wish I had just added the fourth place, which had more of the decorative items I really wanted.

So to sum it all up…

  • Tip 1: Don’t register for things just because. They’ll just be a waste of space later.
  • Tip 2: Think of entertaining, just because you don’t like something, it doesn’t mean it won’t be used. It may be useful when you have guests.
  • Tip 3: Register at multiple places, even if no one knows. I added a 4th registry at Pottery Barn, but didn’t tell anyone. There were only a few items I wanted at the time. I added it after the shower and I’ve only purchased items from it post-wedding to get the completion discount.  I wish I had included Williams Sonoma, too!
  • Tip 4: Register for what you want. Add a few frivolous items, if you really love them. Just make sure you have items in all price points, so no one feels left out.

What are your best registry tips? What items were your all stars, and which could you live without?

GREAT tips!! There’s several things that I (like you, trying to save space and was very picky about what we put on it) wish we had included and several things we did include that we don’t really use…But mostly, I just wish I still had our PB discount!

Good tips! I’m excited to register, but a little intimidated. I think this will be the FIs favorite part, though!
And don’t be afraid of your crock pot, they’re awesome. We use ours at least 2 or 3 times a month! Pulled pork is super simple - just put the pork shoulder in, season it with salt and pepper, and add about 4-6 cups of water and a few boullion cubes. Set for 8 hours, then pull out the pieces, shred them, and add delicious BBQ sauce. SO GOOD.

One of my favorite gifts ever (non wedding related!) was my Crock Pot! Just try it out, you’ll love it. PM me if you want recipes!

Mr. E picked up a crock pot once, it’s still in the box. I really want to use it though, just need to look up some recipes!

Awesome tips! Especially the one about thinking of entertaining; until my sister mentioned this to me I was blind to the fact that I might actually need multiple matching place settings (oops).

Great towels are soooooo fantastic to register for! I may or may not have become a towel fanatic because of work and it makes me sad when people don’t register for good high quality towels, sometimes I am the loon that buys off register to give people the experience of great towels.

I have an AWESOME and easy pulled pork recipe for the crock pot! You can’t lose! Use a boston butt (cheap meat and it turns out perfect!)….season with pepper and garlic salt on all sides….place in the crock pot…..fill 3/4 full with rootbeer soda (1 or 2 cans depeneding on how big the crock pot and meat is). I usually put it in the crock pot around 7pm and flip it around 9pm…then go to bed and when I wake up in the morning its perfect! (usually around 6 or 7am) Everyone loves it and its so simple!

Agree 100%. Great towels are a must. We already had them and I had to convince my mother that I did not need to register for cheap-o towels just because “everyone should register for towels” and because she was astonished by the price of the good ones… :)

But on the crockpot, definitely try it. The thing that frustrates me the most is the number of recipes that want you to put in a can of creamed soup to cook in them–I made homemade veg soup Saturday by sauteeing up some onion and celery first and pressing 2 cloves of garlic in right before it was done, (I saute them first just b/c I think they cook up better that way, you probably wouldn’t have to), then putting them in the pot with two cartons of decent stock - I like the flavor of chicken but veg works well too, and one 15 oz can of diced tomatoes (not drained), with about 1# of chopped carrots (1/2″ dice), 3 chopped potatoes, 1/2 a bag of frozen corn, about 3/4# cut up fresh green beans, and a can of black-eyed peas (rinsed). These were just what I happened to have on hand. I added some salt and pepper and set the timer for 4.5 hours on high while we were out and the vegs were tender but not mush when we got home. You could also add cooked chicken if you’d like meat in your soup. Point being, you don’t have to have a specific recipe, if you get the hang of the cooking times, you can do whatever! 8 hours on low would probably work, too, if you’re doing it on a work day. During summer when I have fresh herbs outside, I might add in the parsley.

And to Rheabee80, if you’re reading again–honestly, some of my coolest gifts came from those loons who went off the registry! haha!

You just convinced me to go with my gut and add a fourth registry location. Thanks for the tips - I feel much less guilty now!

Oh, and don’t be scared of the crock pot. Seriously, they’re amazingly simple to use. You throw the ingredients in, put it on low and a few hours later you have a delicious meal, with almost no effort required. Once you try it, you’ll be hooked!

Crock pots are amazing! Use yours! I love the feeling that dinner is made, but I’ve had to do hardly any work. I made crockpot stew the other day, and the prep went like this: Open package of pre-cubed stew beef, throw in pot. Open bag of baby potatoes, throw in pot. Open bag of baby carrots, throw in pot. Pour in broth, season. Cut up onion, throw in pot.
Seriously, it was about 7 minutes of work, and 6 hours later I had dinner and plenty of leftovers!

Love the registry tips. I gotta chime in about the crockpot-love, too. There’s nothing so wonderful as the smell of a stew or roast that’s been slowcooking all day, and you know all you have to do is set the table and dig in! (And if you have more foresight than I do, you’ll put in a liner which makes clean-up a breeze…so I’m told, anyway.)

You were so right to register for NICE towels. I did, too!

But now you have me thinking I should go with that third registry I was contemplating.

Our crock pot is definitely our most used item! But that’s because my husband likes to cook, and most of our stuff is still packaged up in the basement. Our 6 month mark is coming up very soon too, but since we live in an apt. and are currently looking for a house, we didn’t want to ruin our new dishes and flatware in our craptastic dishwasher. So we don’t really know what all we will use.

I think we should have registered at a 4th place too… :)

My sister-in-law did 4 registries, only having 2 or 3 listed on bridal shower invites depending on the crowd (rich in-laws, country family, kitschy friends) and it worked really well. I did 3 and don’t regret it at all.

Biggest regrets: cheap knife block (I’m all Wusthof now), mismatched plasticware, getting a blender, cheap bedding

Best decisions ever: Kitchenaid mixer (I make bread, cookies, everything in this) and ice cream maker. Both things people said I wouldn’t touch but I know myself and malted chocolate chip ice cream and apple sorbets have been worth it.

Love this post! I’m with you on a lot of this stuff… of course, the things that you use most, or that gather dust vary immensely with each individual couple, but holler at the TOWELS. We also got raised eyebrows at our super expensive towels but now whenever our friends come to stay with us, they can’t stop raving about our fluffy, soft oversized towels! We did end up doing 4 registries and I think it really worked well. A couple people commented, but mostly people seemed to say they had fun looking through all the options and selecting their gifts. Oh and the crockpot - you’ve got to try it! I grew up in a family that never used one either, so it was really Mr. Peachy that wanted it but now we use it ALL THE TIME. We’ve made a ton of amazing stews and soups, and the best pulled pork ever!

I feel the same way about our registries. Though we didn’t get the stand mixer which I’m bummed about, so we’re returning some things that we won’t use as much in order to get that. So excited for it!

We bought a crock pot a few months ago. I wasn’t sure how much we’d use it, and before I did I was a bit intimidated by it. But once we started it is really easy. When we use it we’ll prep it the night before, and start it cooking as we leave the house in the morning. It really is easy, and once you start using it you’ll definitely be a fan!
