About Mrs. Hyena

The beginning of our engagement was very frustrating for me. I had moved to this new city about eight months prior and, as churchgoing folk, we decided we wanted to find a church to attend together. The difficult part was finding one we both liked, since we came from different religious backgrounds and hadn’t had to deal with them while in college. Now that we were living in the same town, there were a lot of churches to try out, and we tried. them. all.

And Now, a Reading from Paul's Letter to the Corinthians... : wedding college station religion religious ceremony Crasher crasher

Enter engagement. Mr. Hyena really REALLY wanted our ceremony to take place in a church. Great! Only problem? Eight months into our search and we hadn’t found a church that we both even liked to attend every week, let alone wanted to get married in. It was time to kick the search into high gear.

For four months after that, we attended two different churches’ services every Sunday. Maybe not the best idea ever, but I was panicking. We wanted to get married during wedding season (because Mr. Hyena is in grad school, and we didn’t want the wedding to conflict with any of his schooling), and I didn’t want all the churches in town to be booked already. Priorities, man.

Four months into our engagement and we still had no ceremony site and no set date. My planning was at a complete standstill right as I was getting excited to get things done.

Anybody else new to their town and having a hard time finding what you’re looking for?

YES!

We didn’t have the problem with the church for our wedding because we got married in a non-denominational chapel on the property where we wanted to have our reception. We “rented” a minister for our ceremony who happened to be the golf pro at the community.

Have you considered looking for a chapel and then finding someone you are close to who may be willing to get ordained or asking for suggestions from friends/co-workers/fellow students for someone to marry you?

We’re still looking for a church. After growing up Catholic and deciding to look for something else, we’re doing the same thing you are now except w/o a wedding looming over us. We are trying out new churches every Sunday. I. Feel. Your. Pain. There!!!!!

Good luck!!

I hope that there’s a part two to this story, in which you guys find a church home that’s right for you (and that works for your wedding - that’d be a nice perk, too!).

@Miss Hyena: I totally sympathize, although not in exactly the same way. We had difficulties finding a church we liked in our town, but we also had to deal with finding a church where we are having our wedding! Ah, the joys of wedding planning.

We are from different religions so that took care of that. But I have friends that had such a hard time. I remember a friend of mine who wanted to get married in a Catholic Church (not coming down on the CC but she’s the only friend I know who had problems negotiating for a wedding) and it was hellish for her. Not bad bad, but just a long drawn out thing. She did end up getting her Church though so hang in there Ms H.

I hope you find a church you both feel comfortable with! There was a student parish in my hometown that I absolutely loved. I’ve had a hard time finding one (still) in my current city, although I’ve been here for over 6 years.

We ran into something like this. We are from two different religious backgrounds and trying to find a church would have been next to impossible. So we got married on a beach in Mexico. I think thats a good compromise. ;)

Miss Hyena, as a wedding officiant, I have heard stories like yours many, many times over. I wonder if Mr. H’s grad school has a chapel on campus, and if they have a minister on staff who performs services there. Another option is to find a beautiful setting in your town and interview some non-denominational ministers to perform your ceremony. I realize that having a church wedding is what many brides dream of and believe in, but remember that God would be in that garden, gazebo, or chapel, too. http://www.trinitycottage.com

FH has said that he and I are “pres-bre-baptist free” because of our varied denominational background.
The unfortunate/fortunate thing about Waco is that there enough churches in the Waco area that we could go to a different church every weekend and not duplicate during my time at Baylor. Of course the two denominations I grew up with (Brethren and EV Free) aren’t among those churches.
We ended up plugging into the church were FH spent most of his college years, we’re not 100% happy with everything but it’s the best fit we could find and after making an effort we found a Sunday school and homegroup that we really enjoy.

We decided to not be married in an active church but have chosen a preservation hall in Ft. Worth that was a church and have our pastor friend officiate. It makes everyone happy.

I can see where not having your site figured out would put a serious slowdown on planning.
