About Mrs. Socks

If you remember, I confessed early on that I have hiperhidrosis…which basically means that my hands and feet sweat a ridiculous amount. I don’t ever wear shoes without socks since it’s horribly uncomfortable, so I was concerned about wearing those pretty Kate Spades that I fell so in love with.

Dressed to the Nines, Married on the Tens: Sweaty Bride Confessions : wedding philadelphia pictures pro pics recap 340 201

Here’s a reminder of the shoes. And my awesome color coordinating skillz.

Do my feet look like they were in little puddles? No? Well, they were. They were big, squishy sweaty messes.

And you know what? I’m here to tell you how it went and that I survived being a sweaty bride.

I can remember being a little kid, and one of my biggest worries was sweating profusely on my wedding day and dripping all over my groom. Guess what? As I got older, that fear never went away, it just intensified despite meeting a wonderful man who never minds holding my sweaty hands.

Here’s what I did to alleviate some (not all–my condition is too severe to be completely cured even after I had surgery for it 10 years ago) of my sweating:

  1. Went to the dermatologist and got some meds––one pill to help control the sweating (the pills I take on a daily basis anyway), and another to help with the swelling (a basic water pill). Taken together, I have to pee every half hour for 4-5 hours, and I have extremely dry mouth, but after 5 hours, I feel better, my hands and feet aren’t as swollen and I sweat less. Would I take both of these meds every day? No, but for my wedding, the side effects were worth it. I took them early in the morning, and by the time our photographer arrived, the worst of the side effects were over.
  2. I wore socks and cowboy boots when I didn’t HAVE to be in my Kate Spades. After the ceremony, I changed into socks and boots (privately, of course) before I let anyone even congratulate me. Guess what? No one noticed the change! And, of course, because of that, I stayed true to my moniker, Mrs. Socks to the end.Dressed to the Nines, Married on the Tens: Sweaty Bride Confessions : wedding philadelphia pictures pro pics recap Boots
  3. Throughout the morning and during the photo sessions, I kept a hand towel closeby to wipe my hands on. Sister Socks held my bouquet while I mopped at the excess sweat. I also turned the A/C on blast in the van we rented.
  4. During dinner, I held on tight to my napkin, and periodically wiped my hands off on it during the reception. Also, Mr. Socks’ suit jacket made do for an impromptu towel at times, too.
  5. I have an incredible husband, family and friends who knew about my issue and did whatever they could to help. Many people with hiperhidrosis are too embarrassed to talk about the issue, but for me, it’s just a part of who I am, so the people closest to me know all about it and always offer to help me when I need it.

So yeah, I was sweaty on my wedding day, but honestly, my mind was occupied by SO many other things, that it wasn’t at the forefront of my mind even though for my whole life, I thought it would be on that day. I pushed through it, and even though it honestly sucked at times, I’m used to dealing with it, so it didn’t slow me down too much.

My advice to fellow sweaters is to prepare as much as possible for the day–go to a dermatologist, keep a hand towel close, tell your family and friends so they can help when you need it, and enjoy the day despite the slippery hands and feet.

Did you have to take some super sweatiness into account on your wedding day? How did you deal with it?

I had the same fears, for I too am a sweaty kid. Which is the main reason we got married in January!

I’m glad you were able to get through it without it being such a big issue. I am so nervous about this. I sweat VERY easily on my FACE when nervous or if I walk 10 steps in weather over 70 degrees. So I am terribly worried I’ll have shiny face in all of my pictures. =0(

You’ve given me hope. I’ve been sooo worried about my big day. I sweat profusely JUST from my hands and feet. I almost never wear slip-ons because of it and I dread shaking hands with people. It’s good that your family is so attentive to the issue. I’ve only ever talked to my sister about it. This makes me consider talking to my bridal party even if it IS a little embarrassing.

Hello fellow sweaty girl!!! I have been suffering with this as well for as long as I can remember! Hands, feet, pits and other areas
:( It’s so embarassing and frustrating! I’ve never gone to a dermatologist, but other doctors never even bothered to try to help. I have avoided socoal situations most of my life and forget hand holding all together, not to mention foot massages….and like you, socks are my best friends! It even controls what I wear for fear of someone seeing the sweaty evidence!
I finally found dyrsol a few weeks ago after searching the internet for an answer. IT WORKS! My pits are dry as hell (YAY) and my hands and feet are getting there. So excited to find something to help me :) And I’m glad I’m not the only one! Thanks for posting!

omgoodness this post is for me. i have the same problem and i cant seem to find a doctor who even understands!? i was given a topical deodrant kind of thing, prescription but it didnt work. plus i was rubbing deodorant on my feet and hands. its was obviously not made for this. those side effects you mentioned dont seem so bad compared to the sweat. im also worried about my shoe choice…and im getting married outside in july. what was i thinking?? i sweat horribly from my pits, hands, feet, i mean really everywhere. and if they arent sweaty, im cold and clamy. I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!!!!!! Thank you for this post.

Socks, I have been following you all along, and I had been wondering how your day went from this angle. Thanks so much for sharing.

I was convinced I had hyperhidrosis for a long time, but I think I am just a general heavy sweater - my underarms are my biggest culprit. I worry about it year round and was freaking out for my wedding day. I started using Certain Dri a week before hand which helped quite a bit - but it’s still no miracle cure for me!

I am so freaked out by this as well. Although for me it isn’t my hands and feet, it is my back. I can barely walk a few blocks (granted I walk really fast) without feeling dribbles of sweat rolling down my back. I have heard there are topical fixes but I still need to make an appt with the doc. Glad it worked out for you, right now I am just praying for a cool September day (not likely to happen though). Maybe ice packs strapped into my corset? ;)

Hehe I did the same thing. As soon as the ceremony was over I took my shoes off. I even have a couple pictures where I am holding them. ;)

Isn’t it just wonderful how the things we think will disrupt a significant event fades into the background (still there, but not impacting every conscious moment)? Thank you so much for sharing your story, Socks. (The Kate Spades are to DIE for!)

Socks, you pulled it off like the pro you are. Although you bravely shared your medical condition, nobody could have guessed it from the photos. Gorgeous!

Not sure about USA, but in Canada you can get an over the counter product called Drysol which you apply at night to gradually reduce sweating. I’ve used it off and on for years and it’s a very economical alternative to going the prescription/botox shot route.

Good for you, Mrs S! I don’t have a specific condition that I know of, but I get hot ALL THE TIME, like seriously, and have the worst red face/hairline sweats. It’s part of the reason why I’m definitely having an up-do for the wedding, because I know my hair would turn into a soggy mess if I did it any other way. Also, you rocked those boots!
