Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

Original Thoughts: Part Two

March 23rd, 2011 @ 4:12 pm by Mrs. Magic

In Part One of this, um, two-part series, I thought I had come up with an original idea in my own head, and it turned out that it wasn’t so original after all.

In this part, though, well…I am basically shamelessly stealing other brides’ ideas. OK, it’s not exactly like that. I do have a little shame.

Actually, I don’t have quite as much shame as this dog.

So, you wanna know what I am pirating and totally passing off as my own original idea (except to you, Dear Reader)? Here we go!

Save the dates! Here are Mrs. Stripes’s STDs, which I mostly shamelessly Bogarted.

I mean, for real, y’all. A cartoon? Of the happy couple in a photo booth strip?? With their pets???

I die. (I nicked that expression from wedding-blogger land too. It’s all like, “I die because that is so freaking cute and I need it right now, even if it’s as trendy as hair fascinators and Uggs.”)

So yeah, hopefully we will have our own version of that lovely STD, and thanks to Mrs. Stripes for the idea!

Also, I pinched this guestbook idea from multiple brides and blogs:

And this one!

Shoes I yoinked from the amazingly stylish Mrs. Scissors!

They are Louboutins. They are flats, great for my lanky 5’10″ frame. They are made out of cork, and they spell L-O-V-E! Who could resist? Not this chickadee! I bought my own, although breaking into Mrs. Scissors’s house and actually stealing-stealing hers might have been more cost effective. But, of course, illegal. And bad bride behavior!

I’m sure there are other things I have ganked as well—bunting, paper garlands made from books, chalkboard signs, a s’mores bar…all of these things have been done before at many other weddings. I worried (excessively, as per usual) that I was unoriginal and lame. But then I realized three important things.

1. NO ONE, except us bridal-blogging freaks, knows about these ideas! The other day, someone told me about a “really original and unique” guestbook idea. The idea was to make a photo book of the bride and groom, and have the guests sign around the photos. To me, with the bridal region of my brain overdeveloped and in hyperdrive, I was pretty sure that this concept, while very sweet and perfectly functional, has been around for a while. However, the guests at this wedding were RAVING about what a clever and unique idea it was! Awesome! Why do we put all this pressure on ourselves (or, unintentionally, on each other?) to be the most unique, beautiful, and awesome bride, party planner, and hostess EVER? It’s too much.

2. Inspiration runs in a circle. It goes round and round. Rap stars these days are dressing like people dressed in the 1980s, rockin’ stonewashed denim and bright colors. And stonewashed denim is never a good idea, fellows.

So, yeah, the whole wedding world is blowin’ up with milk glass and candy buffets right now, but in 2020 it’s gonna be all like, I don’t know, leg warmers and helicopters. It’s just a shift in time and fashion and, um, air, and we’re just floating along for the ride.

3. I’m marrying the man I love, and that’s pretty unique and individual for US. The details are fun, and boy do I love thinking and dreaming and planning our wedding, but none of that really matters next to our vows and our lives together. I think it is sometimes tough to remember that starting a marriage is the point of all of this, especially for me, a girl who LOVES to plan and host parties. But I am going to keep reminding myself of that whenever I begin to get bogged down in details and/or lose focus.

Are you as much of a thief as I am? Do you get bogged down in the pressure to be unique and individual? Are you impressed with how many different synonyms I used for the verb “steal”?

[*An alternative title to this post might have been "Slang Synonyms for Stealing"! And here is a clip from my all-time favorite episode of Sex and The City that very effectively demonstrates the meaning of the term "Bogart." Scroll to the 6:30 mark, but really the whole video is hi-freaking-larious.]

Seriously, no one knows weddings like the wedding crazed, ie: those of us on WB. :)

People told me our photobooth was the first time they had seen/heard of that, they loved the idea of Dan’s orange socks/my orange shoes, they also talked about the starfish escort cards. Totally stolen ideas that apparently, none of my guests had seen before.

Ps. I love that you’re stealing the love shoes. LOVE the love shoes. That’s enough love for now…

What’s funny about these posts is I’m getting married in October too, and WE have so many similar ideas :) Maybe we should swap them.

I was thinking about the wedding tree thumbprints as well… but my worry was, will everyone want to have ink all over their thumb when they’re in nice clothes? Probably a really stupid worry, but maybe you had it too?

i just decided right now that i might steal those love shoes too.

so there you go. yes, i steal things. but you know what? imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. and if you don’t want your idea stolen, uhm, don’t put it online.

I have to remind myself that no one else reads wedding blogs as religiously as I do so none of them think of these things as overdone or trendy (bunting, jam favors, chalkboard table numbers, mason jars etc.) When I am sharing my ideas with others I sometimes feel like I have to defend them because they have only attended a “traditional” wedding so the rustic elegance I’m going for is a new concept for them.

I think this is so true! With the small (very small) exception of my mom and bridesmaids, I doubt any of our guests are reading blogs and seeing all of these ideas. To your guests, you will be “really original and unique” ;)

Bahhhh hahahahahah! I never heard the word bogart in that clip before! Eh potato/pot-tah-toe we’re all stealing ideas, there is no such concept as unique anymore.

I think I was more worried about being original when I first started planning. But as you read all these posts and articles, you realize that everything is just borrowed, maybe tweaked a little, but almost almost always borrowed from someone else. (notice the use of borrow instead of steal, I was taught not to steal) :)
I have to say that I have been one the edge of whether or not to use the thumbprint tree and I think I may just do it! It is the cutest thing!! Love the STD’s too!

Great post, Magic! I totally agree that we tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves, and a casual yoink (or two, or ten in my case) of a great idea is A-OK in my book. ;)

It’s all borrowing, right? You’ll always take your own spin on things, even if it is pretty similar to the inspiration! Plus there are already so many awesome ideas out there that it would be a shame to not use them just because someone else (or lots of someone elses) has!

A few months ago I thought I had totally original ideas! Then I found wedding blogs and then realized how UN original I am. Oh well, I still love the ideas and agree that most of my family and friends don’t stalk blogs like I do ;)

@hotchocolate - was just a bridesmaid in a friends wedding that did the guest tree (and everyone was raving about it! See?!) They had cute little packets of wipes on the table so people could wipe the ink off before it got anywhere unwanted :)

Most people attending a wedding have not been spending the time we do poring over the great ideas that get shared and passed around, therefore, even if it’s something we think is old-hat, so-very-over-done or passe’ will be Uber.Brilliant.and.Clever to John and Jane WeddingGuest.

@thefuturemrs.o: Yay!

@hotchocolate: Throw some wipes in a cute container! That’s my plan (it’s just a mental plan, no actual execution has occurred yet!).

@Lo: ME TOO! I feel like I am explaining yarn pom garlands to a two year old anytime someone asks what I am making, and then I get all defensive!

I agree with all y’all, it’s all borrowed from somewhere, or inspired from something. And it will be awesome, because of that!

When I do my recaps, I shall be paying homage to A LOT of bees. I wonder what my wedding would have looked like without the input of the bees? I shudder :(

An instructor I had often told us “no idea is safe when Picasso is in the room” and that “all artists borrow, but great artists steal”. The meaning is that when a great artist works with an idea they do it in such a way that it is completely their own. No one could ever see it again in its original form without being reminded of how it was done by the person who stole the idea.

I am sure your wedding will be beautiful. All of your smaller details will add up to one wonderful day that people will not soon forget.

No pressure to always be original. Just choose what you know is good.

I agree with you that all ideas and inspiration is basically a continuous flow where all ideas contribute to the creation of new ones. I don’t believe there is anything that can be considered 100% original: it was always inspired by something else!
