Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

Original Thoughts: Part One

March 23rd, 2011 @ 10:41 am by Mrs. Magic

I’m not sure I have any original thoughts!

When I first got engaged (almost a year ago now!), I immediately jumped to dress shopping. As I was trying on dresses, I knew for. a. FACT. that I definitely, absolutely, and totally wanted to wear a flower in my hair. How romantic! How pretty! How creative and unique!

Then, I began reading wedding blogs and learned that every bride in 2009, 2010, and 2011 has worn or plans to wear a flower in her hair. EVERY bride, you ask? Really?

I realize this is only three photos, but a Google search for “bridal fascinators” (because, of course, a fascinator is a hair flower or other type of hair adornment) yields 67,500 results. A search for “hair flower” on Weddingbee yields at least ten pages of results, likely even more. (I also learned that while every bride in the entire world, probably including this one, is wearing a hair fascinator, a lot of brides are also going the extra mile and making them themselves. I might have to be “original” here and just buy the damn thing, just for uniqueness’s sake!)

While I thought wearing a flower in my hair would be unique and awesome and special and romantical, turns out that bridal hair flowers, I mean, fascinators are as ubiquitous as Uggs and rain boots in a sorority house.

(Side note: Are weather-specific boots a trend everywhere with sorority girls, or just in the South? Has the trend become more generalized to include most college girls? Maybe my little sis can weigh in on this timely and important topic!)

OK, so what? I mean, Uggs are fine and rain boots are fine. Cute and functional. So what if they are super trendy and everyone’s doing it?

It’s just a little disappointing that something that I thought was so ME turns out to also be sooooooooo everyone else too.

Unfortunately, this is only Part One of how creative I am not. Stay tuned for the next post, where I go on to tell you all the other ideas I have apparently stolen from brides who have gone before me!

Have you ever thought you were being creative and unique, only to discover that your “original thought” was totally commonplace in wedding land? Were you bummed out by this revelation, or did you decide that you were the original trendsetter and everyone else was just following your lead (which is, secretly, what I think every time this happens to me)?

And, are you wearing a hair flower? :-)

I know how you feel! Every idea I’ve had, I’ve googled, and a million photos come up of people who’ve already done it. But I figure for majority of your guests, a lot of stuff probably IS original/unique to them… and no matter what, it will all be brand new to you, so who cares!

I am currently looking for a flower too :) Some are so crazy expensive, I’m thinking of just getting one at the local accessories store where pre-teens go to shop!

Mr. H thought it was sooooo unique when I told him I wanted to do a paper airplane sendoff. Then, when I showed him a picture of one, he was bummed it wasn’t “really” unique. :-/

I love this look! I am in love with that second one, with the feather. Awesome.

I actually am thinking that I will wear some sort of fresh flower in my hair. Definitely not unique, either, but I heart me some yummy fresh flowers.

wedding world is not the real world. honestly.

your guests (likely) don’t read wedding blogs. what may seem like a totally overdone idea in the wedding world is probably something unique and new to the actual world.

and even if it HAS been done to death and everyone has heard of it, if it fits you and your wedding, who cares?

Ok, I totally giggled on the Ugg’s/Rain boots look. They weren’t in when I was in college but I sure see most of my sorority wearing them these days! I wore real flowers in my hair. There was so much hairspray in the ‘do’ that all we had to do was jam them in there. I had a hard time being able to tell how big the hair clips would be before buying them and I wanted something small and unobtrusive.

Our wedding was October, as well and the florist was able to find some small white flowers in season that worked great.

I know that hair pieces are really in right now, but I like them and I’m going to wear one anyway :).

And as a former sorority girl in Ohio–>I love my Uggs, but I never wore them unless it was cold outside. They were a necessity in Cleveland :).

That’s definitely how I felt about bird cage veils. however, I wouldn’t worry too much about being original. If you like it go for it. Who cares if someone else has done it! Originality, when it comes to weddings might be a bit over rated….

I’m totally wearing a flower hair piece. But that’s mainly because I don’t really like veils (no matter how many my mom and the dress consultant put on me), so my other choice was a hair piece, and there are so many cute ones!

Yes, aside from having an intimate wedding w/ no bridal party whatsoever, I’ve sadly discovered pretty much everything about my wedding is unoriginal! And yes, I’ll be wearing a hair flower (or several small ones throughout- is THAT original?) :)

I have always been a fan of wearing flowers or other adornments in my hair, so naturally I wanted to wear one in my hair on my wedding day. Well, as the trend picked up in weddings, I got kind of sad because it wasn’t going to be unique anymore, and I hate looking like I am following a trend, but I am still going to do it because it is something that everyone knows is very “me” and I still want to do it. I just am going to use a different kind of flower from what I have seen most people do-that is how I will make it unique.

I also have wanted a one-shoulder dress for about 3 or 4 years now–before they were super popular, and this year especially they are becoming really popular. It made me kind of sad that it wasn’t just “my” thing anymore, but I can deal with it.

It sucks because I have found a lot of things I wanted to use for my wedding, and I wanted to do them before they were trendy, but I had to wait a long time for the engagement, so I just had to roll with the punches and still do what I liked, regardless of if it was trendy or not.

I’ve had the same thing happen tons of times also! I totally agree with @valerie: I think it’s important to keep telling yourself that probably most of your guests haven’t seen every idea that we all read about every day! unless everyone at your wedding is a recent bride, I’m sure they will think most of your ideas are very unique! =)

I totally raocked the hair flower, and yes, I made it myself! Unoriginal, party of 10039809847391.

I have had some ideas that I thought were totally stolen by every other bride out there. :)
I am not wearing a flower or feather in my hair. Just a boring ol’ crystal clip.

There’s a reason the phrase “It’s all been done before” is a cliche. :D
And yes, I am totally with you. I’ve decided to focus more on what’s “us” than whether I will be the first person ever in the world doing it.
@rachgirl82: Just to ruin your fun, we are also having no bridal party whatsoever! And I will likely be wearing several small silk flowers in my hair. What can I say? You and I clearly have excellent taste.

The only time I thanked the heavens I was the first to marry among our friends was that they all thought my hair flower/feathers were unique and original and I was a trendsetter, bwahahaha! Whatever, I owned it!

And yes, as a northern sorority girl Uggs and rainboots are everpresent! From skirts in fall with Uggs to the snowstorms to skirts in early spring with Uggs. Only now do I question the logic behind the 3 season Ugg…

I definitely think it’s important to keep in mind what Valerie stated.. most of your guests aren’t reading wedding blogs or magazines on a daily/weekly basis and therefore a lot of your ideas might be completely unique and original to them! (Especially parents and older guests). And if you like it and want it then do it! You’ll make yourself bonkers trying to come up with an absolutely unique idea

I love hair flowers even if everyone else has done them. The idea is to find a hair flower that is unique and totally you. ;)

Yes, I am all about the hair flower! Granted I’ve wanted a flower in my hair for the past 10 years (ever since my friends started getting married). My luck it’s become a trend. Whatever, I’m still going for it!

Wear what ever you want! Sure, it’s a little annoying when everyone seems to be doing it, but who cares? You know what everyone else is doing? Wearing a WHITE GOWN! And maybe a VEIL! ;) Honestly, we need to stop pressuring ourselves into thinking that we have to make every aspect of our weddings unique. Just pick one you love and wear it with confidence!
