Mrs. Hyena's Picture
Mrs. Hyena, College Station, TX Age and Occupation: 23, Marketing Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Aerospace Engineering Grad Student Engagement Date: January 8, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Downtown 202 About Me: I'm a Texas girl who met my future hubby in high school, then headed up to Oklahoma for a college education (BOOMER SOONER!) before moving back to the Lone Star State to be with him. I love reading and recycling, Photoshop and reality TV, making lame jokes and then laughing at them, quoting movies, and Mr. Hyena most of all. I'm perpetually early and I like to get things accomplished. When my cat meows at me, I meow back. We're planning a laid-back, unintentionally DIY wedding with a cocktail-party vibe, and can't wait to celebrate our nuptials with our nearest and dearest!
About Mrs. Hyena

Long ago, I thought it would be adorable to use potted plants as our centerpieces. Flower pots are so cute, and I hate the idea of using cut flowers that are just going to die in a few days. With potted plants, the flowers could thrive long after the wedding!

While wandering around Wal-Mart one evening, Mr. Hyena and I stopped in the gardening section to take a look at what types of plants were available. I was undecided about whether actual potted plants were a good idea, especially because I was so underwhelmed with the quality of the flowers. (But then again, it’s Wal-Mart. I did look at Home Depot and HEB as well, and was still a little disappointed.) They didn’t have much variety, and the ones they did have weren’t the best quality.

Here are some cute pictures I’m using as inspiration:

Hmm, apparently not too many people have used pots in their wedding decor. Oh well, that’s cool—something unique for me! Even without too many concrete inspiration photos, I think this idea might pan out…

Did you have a vision in your head of your decor and then it didn’t work out? What did you do?

I was thinking the same thing, but don’t want to be too picnicky. The inspiration pic is very classy and I love the idea of using moss to fill it in. Also your ribbon covered pots look very chic!

Look at this!

Little pots arranged together on a table can also serve as favors. love.

In general, I think cement planters and terra cotta pots work best for outdoor weddings…not sure what you are planning…

How weird is this? Right after I read this post, I was looking through the Spring 2011 Crate&Barrel Catalog. They seriously have some of the cutest pots! They’re bold and cheerful. I know that doesn’t help much on the actual floral side of things, but they’re really pretty! Not to mention they have an assortment!

I’m thinking of using potted plants for the ceremony as well. They’re a much greener option, but the problem is I can’t keep plants alive. Maybe I’ll put notes under certain chairs, and the lucky guests get to take the potted plants home.

I thought about potting plants after the threat of freeze passed this Spring and using them as centerpieces, but we had that weird Winter and a late freeze or two. Combined with my awesome ability to procrastinate, I ended up having to opt for cut flowers.

I love the idea of using potted plants! I hope you find a place that has more variety and what you’re looking for!

I was totally thinking of doing the same thing! I hate to kill pretty flowers for no reason, but if I can’t figure out how I want them done I may just go with a few flowers instead of a ton. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I was going to do herbs and started growing some but I don’t have a green thumb. I then thought potted plants but don’t want to wait till last minute to get and I don’t want to kill them either. back to planning…ugh

I love this idea… and I can totally hand off the doing of it to one of my bridesmaids! She’s the one who taught me how to garden, so I know she’d love it (and it would be one less thing for me to do. ;)

Diggin’ Mrs. Beagle’s ribbon-decked pots. How sweet would yellow daisies or mums be in those?

Just need to say I love you for an HEB reference. I’m a displaced Texan (and an Aggie!) living in California and I seriously miss the HEB!!

looking at the above photo has made me realize that I may be able to incorporate a few potted plants in my decor hmmm… maybe like on the guest book table and in other various locations where the florist gave me a jacked up price on an “arrangement” thanks for the post… the wheels in my head are turning LOL

I love your inspiration pic, but that’s actually not a potted plant… there’s probably floral foam resting at the top of the planter, and roses and hydrangea have been inserted to make it look like they were planted.

I think it’s a super cute and adorable idea - but it also does depend on the style of your wedding! If it’s outdoors or rustic it’ll be perfect!

Hyena! I was browsing my reader this morning and I came across this post and thought of you:

http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/03/make-your-own-colored-chalkboard-paint/

Scroll down a little, she pictures some pots painted with chalkboard paint. That might be a cool idea! You could write table numbers, messages to the guests, etc on them… (though I don’t know if I’d take on the project of making the paint myself as that blogger had done…)

I’m using terra cotta pots spray painted gold on some of my tables. They will have a candle and gems in the pot and a flower ring around the tray portion. I was inspried by a photo on the bee (wish I could remember who)

I love those pots! Sister-In-Law Meerkat has similar pots on her graduation tables and they look fantastic!
