About Mrs. Candy Apple

Swiss Miss: The Apex

March 24th, 2011 @ 11:17 am by Mrs. Candy Apple

After some minor mishaps, including lost luggage, Mr. Candy Apple and I took the train to Basel, where Daddy and Step-Mom CA met us at the train station. We went on a hike to an old castle, which was awesome.

I love traveling, and I love the history in Europe! Everywhere you go there are super-old, crumbly buildings. Daddy CA was, of course, bursting to tell me. Since he frequently tells me what my Christmas gift is before I actually receive the gift, I am VERY impressed that he kept the secret. He was talking about weddings while we were hiking (of course), but I guess I wasn’t paying attention. Mr. Candy Apple, on the other hand, was having a panic attack, worrying that I would suspect. Luckily, his then-girlfriend, now-fiance, is quite dense and doesn’t notice obvious signs.

On Sunday, May 9, 2010 (Mother’s Day!), we woke up fairly early, packed a fabulous picnic lunch that included a nice bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, grabbed our backpacks, and headed out on our scenic train ride to Interlaken. But not before Daddy CA gave me an unusually long hug and said, “You guys should just take your time! Stay two days! Maybe longer! Enjoy your time together! My beautiful daughter!” HOW DID I NOT SEE THIS COMING?!

The ride was beautiful, and I love traveling with Mr. Candy Apple. I distinctly remember thinking on the train, hopefully we will be able to travel like this as a married couple, someday. When we got to Interlaken, we decided to check in at our hotel and drop off one of our backpacks before heading up to Murren. When we checked in, the woman referred to me as Mrs. Candy Apple, which at the time I thought was incredibly ironic and slightly sad because I thought Mr. Candy Apple wasn’t going to propose, since I “knew” he wasn’t at the same place emotionally that I was. He, of course, must have been dying from holding his laughter in.

We got to our room and unpacked one of the backpacks. Now, I have a confession to make. Ever since I was little, I’ve been a bit of a snoop. I always found my Christmas presents early because I hate surprises. (Sorry, Mom and Dad!) It’s a good thing Mr. Candy Apple knows me so well. I have to say this now—I really really was not expecting him to propose. However, I wanted him to propose—-I kept thinking, If he’s ever going to propose, Murren would definitely be the perfect place. I just didn’t think he would. At all. Even so, I needed to convince myself that he wasn’t. I know it’s horrible but, while he was in the bathroom, I might have done a quick reconnaissance of the backpack we were taking up to Murren. Maybe. I didn’t find anything (OF COURSE, since he is smart and kept the ring nestled in that floss box!), which “confirmed” that he was not going to propose and made me sad. But, as I said, I really wasn’t expecting him to, so it didn’t dampen my spirits too much. I was just excited to be out traveling and hiking around with him!

To get to Murren from Interlaken, you have to take a train, then a gondola, then another cogwheel train. It’s a beautiful little trip, and it’s so fun going up the mountain. We got up to the village and it was a bit cloudy, so we decided to not go up to the Schilthorn, which is at the tip top of the mountain. (Side note: Mr. Candy Apple had tried calling ahead to see if he could rent out one of the gondola compartments so that we could have it to ourselves while he proposed, but no dice.) Instead, we decided hike up above Murren a bit and find a good place to eat our picnic because it was around lunchtime and I was starving (and maybe a little cranky that he wasn’t going to propose).

While we were in the village, we stopped and ducked into the adorable church. (You can see the church in this post—a picture I actually took while abroad in 2005.) Inside, I said a quick prayer, asking for Mr. Candy Apple to propose. I still didn’t think it would happen at that point, but I really wanted it to! No harm in asking, right?

So, we got up above the village and, after some hiking, noticed a perfect little bench perched alongside the trail, overlooking Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau. We reached the bench and dropped the backpack. (I was, of course, red faced from hiking and may or may not have been breathing heavily—totally sexy and composed.) Mr. Candy Apple somehow managed to get the ring out of the floss box without me noticing, put his arm around me, and while I was taking in the beautiful view, got down on his knee in the mud and asked me to marry him. I believe the first words out of my mouth were, “Are you serious?!” I was just so surprised!! Of course after that I said yes, and we enjoyed the perfect picnic lunch. It was really sunny and beautiful—we couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather, and I couldn’t have planned a more perfect proposal.

Did your fiance/husband manage to surprise you with a proposal? Or did you see it coming? If you’re like me and can’t stand surprises, did you snoop around at all? Did you find the ring ahead of time?? I want stories!

All photographs are my own.

Cutest proposal story ever. I love how surprised you were and that you even snooped right beforehand! Looks like you didnt need a prayer to answer your prayer after all!

Those are gorgeous pictures and such a cute story! Very smart of Mr, CA to hide it where you wouldn’t suspect!

This is completely adorable (and beautiful!). So glad Mr. Candy Apple was able to surprise you :).

Mr. Berry first asked me to marry him one night at home in January 2010 (which was a complete and utter surprise…I think I also uttered the “are you serious??!!” line). He was sans ring, and I’m really not sure what caused him to ask that night. 6 months later he proposed on stage at a car show with an elaborate scheme he had concocted :). I guessed once he started pulling me on stage.

Very sweet story.

I had no idea either. He worked with his dad and the rest of his family to propose to me on his and his dad’s birthdays. It was totally unexpected, but so very us.

Cute story! I didn’t have time to snoop, Mr. H is bad at keeping secrets from me, so he pretty much had to propose the second he got his paws on the ring, lest he spill the beans!

I was totally surprised. I didn’t think he was going to propose until our financal situation was better, so I had no idea. We were on our way to meet my dad, sister and brother-in-law for a birthday dinner for me, and he kept his hands in his pockets the whole way there, which I didn’t think anything of. Once we all got to the restaurant, got to our table and ordered, he pulled out the ring and said “I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” I was in total shock, not just because I wasn’t expecting it but also because it was at my birthday dinner with my family! He wanted me to be surprised and boy did he ever! The other funny thing was that he didn’t tell anyone it was coming, not even my dad, so everyone was totally shocked by it! It was a great surprise and an amazing night.

I am such a snoop too! I used to cut the tape on my presents, open them and re-tape them when I was a kid. I always knew what I was getting. However I did not see the proposal coming. We too had discussions and I thought he just wasn’t ready so when he started proposing in Lake Tahoe I was in disbelief. I don’t think he had even asked me officially or had even pulled out the ring before I said yes.

Ahh! So fun! I love it :) I snooped for my ring when we went to Colorado, but FI had a dream that they searched him and the surprise was ruined, so he decided to propose later (which I then dreamt about–HOW WEIRD)!

The wisteria on the building in the first photo made me gasp. Wouldn’t you just love to come home to THAT every night? (Sigh.)

I came very close to ruining the surprise- we were leaving for vacation and I was rummaging in his armoire for a pair of his shorts that I like to steal, and he had the ring hidden in with his blue jeans! I don’t know how I missed it other than I had absolutely no idea he was even contemplating proposing and wasn’t snooping. I had no clue what was happening until he hugged me right before he dropped to his knee and his heart was beating out of his chest!

We loved Murren! And we actually have a picture at that sweet bench, but this way way before engagement time for us. What a great story, Candy Apple!

Great story! We love that area. We got engaged above Gimmelwald last summer. A friend who had been in the area suggested we go on a steep trail to the summer home of a cow-herder high up on the mountain. And after we visited Sylvia, the cowherder for lunch, we hiked up a bit more, enjoyed the view of Murren and Gimmelwald and he popped the question. Such an enchanting area, we can’t wait to go back!

Oh man. This is probably the greatest proposal story I’ve heard in a while. The setting makes it so romantic :) What a little smarty, that Mr. Candy Apple.

What a beautiful place to get engaged! The view of the alps is absolutely amazing! As for us I had no idea at all. To the point I never even thought to snoop because I had no reason to expect anything. Of course I tend to go through the phone when I’m bored, and he had been text my best friend and sister on possible rings. So I remember him freaking out whenever I touched his phone, but really had no idea.

Love those photos! We got engaged while on a hiking picnic too. My fiance had just gotten my ring in the mail that morning and couldn’t wait to ask me. I kinda knew it was coming though, to the point that when he said ‘I have something important to ask you’, I took a deep breath and said ‘okay lay it on me’. haha.
