Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

Competing Musical Tastes

March 25th, 2011 @ 10:44 am by Mrs. Magic

I think Mr. Magic might think I have no taste in music. Or maybe just bad taste. Either way, we don’t like the same things. I am into country and mainstream pop music (I know, God forbid, right?!?) and whatever cool alternative or rock music trickles my way. To give you an example, I recently went to three concerts in one week. (That’s not normal for me, though.)

Concert #1: Easton Corbin at the NC State Fair

Concert #2: STP at the Raleigh Ampitheater (Mr. Magic is in love with Scott Weiland, and I went to support him in his relationship with a rock star who sometimes wears eyeliner.)

Concert #3: Darius Rucker at the NC State Fair (You may remember him as Hootie from Hootie and the Blowfish, if you are as old as me.)

Mr. Magic did not attend either of the country-music concerts with me. As you can see, he is into, um, other music. Music that is somehow deemed cooler, especially in our group of friends. He thinks country music is too simple, in that the lyrics are actually what they are trying to say. Also, I think he’s just kind of a Yankee at heart. I mean, he was born in Northern Virginia. Technically below the Mason-Dixon line, but too close to Washington, D.C. for him to actually get any good Southern-ness in him.

I mean, he didn’t even know what fat back was, for Pete’s sake!

Anyway. I digress. We do have VERY different musical tastes, which makes it sort of interesting to decide what we are going to play during the different parts of our ceremony and reception. The other day, I asked him if he thought it would be fun to play some less traditional music while people are taking their seats or during the cocktail hour. I named this song, and he agreed to it—although it could have been one of those, “I am just saying ‘Sure, babe’ now because I am not really listening to you, but later I will pretend we never had this conversation and ban this song and all similar tunes.”

Anyway, here’s the song he agreed to!

Bahahahaha. Wouldn’t this just make you want to sing along and dance and laugh if you heard it at a wedding? I mean, if you are like 25 or older. If you are younger, you might be confused. Consult this article to learn more about this talented boy band, known as New Kids on the Block, from the ’80s and ’90s.

Do you and your SO have differing tastes on something that is making it challenge to collaborate on wedding plans?

Ahhh Easton Corbin’s voice makes my heart beat a little bit faster :) He sounds sooo much like my man George Strait!! I love Darius Rucker too, and I agree I still listen to my old Hootie songs on iTunes when I need to get a throwback to his old stuff! ha

I heart Hootie. He’s awesome on all fronts.

And YES-NKOTB! I used to have their posters over my bed. Who was your favorite? I was always a Joey girl.

I have the same problem. I love country and like most other music besides heavy metal and rap. He likes heavy metal and hardcore rock. The only thing we agree on is bluegrass and country gold. I’m putting some of his music into the dinner and cocktail playlist and he will have to deal with everyone else’s tastes for the dancing! (He also doesn’t think I have good taste in music either)

@Cornhusker: YES! George Strait was my original country boyfriend, but now I have moved on to the more age appropriate Easton Corbin…but he’s married. I mean, I guess I almost am too….

@lolo7835: Joey too, naturally! Although now I think Jordan is the cutest!

XKCD love! And I totally agree - NoVA is *not* the south! It is way too DC-influenced up here!

Ok, I knew I liked you - XKCD and NKOTB in one post is full of win.

BTW - is anyone else kind of stoked about NKOTB and BSB touring together this summer? That was, like, my childhood!

OMG, I totally loved NKOTB when I was in elementary school.

Also, I like country, too, especially the story telling aspect of it.

Oh WOW–I had a tape of NKOTB in elementary school that I played incessantly! That song would totally require me to bust out the head bob and sing along.

We actually have very similar musical tastes, we love heavy metal and classic rock. Though I have much more diversity in my musical tastes we both have metal as our standby. Which makes choosing reception music kind of a challenge lol.

Outside of Metallica & a little bit of Rap my FI and I have pretty similar music tastes. We are totally going to have a wedding that is basically the Rock Band soundtrack, lol.

I was never that into NKOTB. Granted I was in Kindergarten when they were big, but I definitely remember playing soccer against a team called Blue Kids on the Block. I have to say though, I have tickets to see them and the Backstreet Boys together this June and really can’t wait!!

We have very different taste. I like pretty much everything. I like booty shakin’ music. I like mellow indie folky music. I like pop. I like country. I like rap. I mean, outside of heavymetal death music and weird non-music stuff, I’m good.

He hates anything played on radio.

But, we do have some mutual likes - motown, Amos Lee, Ray Lamontagne (however you spell that), etc.. It’s a very eclectic and fun music list, I think.

Also, I’m going see NKOTB with Backstreet this summer. And I’m 36. Don’t judge.
