The Cake Is Fake!

March 25th, 2011 @ 1:03 pm by Mrs. Jaguar

So, remember the wedding cake that I said we WILL be having? Well, I made my decision yonks ago, and I’m sticking to it. That cake will be mine. MINE. ALL MINE. (Or really, ours. But mostly mine.) Because it’s so freaking amazing, I’m going to post it here again: be prepared to drooooooool.

Swoon. Just swoon.

Well, I’ve been in talks with our venue about recreating it—one of the inclusions in our wedding package deal was a voucher towards the wedding cake. Once I showed them the image and talked about what I want, they agreed to get a quote on the cake, and came back to me with the difference in price. We managed to get the three-tiered design that you see above, with flowers, for $230. Score!

The hardest part was choosing flavours, but we finally narrowed it down to three contenders. Here’s how I envisioned the cake layers of fluffy goodness:

The Cake Is Fake! : wedding cake sydney 2 2

I’ve been waiting for them to come back to me for weeks now, and they finally did, but they told me they’d do the cakes as heavier mud versions. Apparently if they made the cakes in the lighter sponge type format I was after, the tiers wouldn’t support themselves very well… so I was at a stand-still. I really, really don’t like heavy cakes. Am a light & fluffy girl, myself. So… what to do?

Well, our coordinator at the venue came back to me today with a suggestion: a fake cake. I was all ‘whaaaaaat?’ at first, but then I did some Googling and it turns out that it’s more common than I thought. Apparently, they’ll make the cake look exactly like my inspiration picture, only it’ll be foam tiers, with a small segment of real cake thrown in there for our cake cutting & eating. The rest of the actual cake in our three flavours will be out in the kitchen in plain sheets, ready to cut up and serve. Since most cakes are wheeled into the kitchen to be cut and served anyway, nobody will know the difference! (Er, except you Hive. Sssshhh.)

To be honest, as long as the cake LOOKS as good as the picture shows and TASTES as good as I’m envisioning, I’m happy.

Did you use a fake cake at your wedding? Would you have known the difference?

I have heard of this too and wouldn’t that maybe save you some money? Sheet cakes are so much easier to make and decorating a foam cake is easier too!

Ok. Except, they still have to do all the work to decorate the “fake cake”, PLUS bake whole other cakes for the back. That actually sounds like more work that would be MORE expensive, not less.

I think this is a great way of getting the look you want AND the cake you want! Your flavors sound so delicious–I’d be diving into that lemon layer!

Not for me, but cake would be high up on the super important to me list. As a guest I would choose lots of yummy sheet cake though

Sometimes compromise is good, and this is proof. Way to get the best of both worlds! :)

I’ve been to one wedding with a fake cake (which the bride had mentioned ahead of time) and you couldn’t tell by looking at it. It was beautiful and the sheet cake from the back was really good (and that’s saying something coming from me who does not really like cake).

Well, I have to say that the idea of having a pretty cake that nobody actually gets to eat is kind of odd to me. I’ve seen it done too, and it certainly doesn’t offend me, but why spend multiple hundreds of dollars on a fake cake, PLUS the cost of the sheet cakes in the back? Is it for the pictures?

That is a great idea! We had cupcakes but a consideration was a small, decorative cake with sheet cakes cut to serve. Eventually we went with cupcakes because the more casual, serve-yourself attitude fit with our reception, and cake cutting fees were out of the question, but I love this idea!

I’ve definitely heard a lot about this. I can’t quite bring myself to do it, but if you’re cool with it, I think it’s a great idea. Besides, little secrets are fun.

@Alicia C: Ya, I’m really happy with that. At least our package deal got us something great thrown in with it! :)

@xtatic1: I’m chasing up a lower price as we speak - because decorating foam is much easier than decorating actual cakes - and the sheet cakes don’t have to be as perfect, ya know?

@rachgirl82: The things you learn while wedding planning, eh? ;)

@crayfish: I get what you’re saying - especially if the cake was properly decorated with fondant and fancy designs. Our is just whipped buttercream with some flowers and ribbon, so I presume it’ll be an easier design for them to mimic on the fake cake. The price we’ve been quoted is the same at the moment - I’m waiting for them to come back to me to see if having sheet cakes made instead of tiers will be any cheaper. :)

@Miss Tartlet: I am totally hanging out for the lemon cake. Mmmmmm.

@hopeandpray: Oh, our cake is super important to us too. The thing is, I’d rather we get the fluffier, tastier cakes rather than heavier mud - and if it means we mimic the design to get that, I’m all for it! :)

@Miss Lox: I just want to eat it. (Not the fake one, though I may just lick the buttercream frosting off of it too.)

@Miss Elephant: So nice to hear someone who’s seen it done well! I hope ours will be like your friends’ cake.

@Suz: It is odd, when you think about it: but if you had a choice between a pretty cake that tasted rubbish, or a smaller cake that tasted nice, what would you choose? I’d choose the smaller cake that tasted nice (mmmm, cake) - but this option means I don’t HAVE to choose. I get the nicely decorated one to mimic the look I like, plus the good flavours. And if it’s the same price as the cake I was planning on buying anyway? No worries here! :)

@MrsTimber: Good choice on the cupcakes! Luckily cake cutting was included anyway, so we didn’t have to think about that, but I can see why you chose the other way around. I’ll let you know how ours turns out!

@nicoliolihpf: It really will be a secret… I wonder what the guests would think if we wheeled it out later on in the night while they were still eating their cake slices? :D

Given the choice between a fake cake or heavier cake, we’d choose fake cake every time. Flavor is way more important! And this way, your cake can be fresher; they won’t need the day or so extra lead time to decorate it.

@Miss Pain au Chocolat: That is really true & I’d not even thought of that. Huzzah for fresh cake!
