Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

Le Sigh

March 25th, 2011 @ 3:25 pm by Mrs. Magic

Remember that cake deal I told you about at Sugarland? Well, I went there recently with my work mom. If you don’t have a work mom, you should totally get one. She is someone I work with (obviously), but I love her so much! She is so fun to work with and so generous and kind. I don’t remember how the term “work mom” came up, but I think she said something like “I’m old enough to be your mom!” So now she is my work mom—yay!

Anyway, we went to Sugarland to taste the cakes. Mr. Magic and I had already tried them (last December), and he was out of town. Plus, Work Mom had offered to buy us our wedding cake as our present!!!

But when we got there, we were greeted by the wedding-cake consultant with this:

Le sigh. Sometimes it feels like nothing is easy when it comes to wedding planning. She informed us that since our wedding falls on one of the “top eight most popular wedding weekends of 2011,” the special does not apply to that weekend. She would have contacted me to let me know before we came to our appointment, but she did not have my number or email. She was very sorry (and she seemed a bit scared of our reaction to this news).

She then explained that for our particular weekend, Sugarland could only accommodate orders with a $500 minimum. So I was expecting to get a basic three-tiered cake for $199, and she was telling me I would have to spend $300 more. Huh?

Then she said, “Would you like to taste some cakes?”

Um, yes, please. At this point, $500 was ringing and flashing and spinning in my head…but I am always down for eating. Plus, since we were not able to get the special (which only applied to French vanilla and double chocolate cakes), we could taste a wider variety of cakes. And yes, we’d like some coffee too, thanks.

Also, because I was so bamboozled by this bad news, I forgot to take pictures. You will have to do with these I stole off the interwebs.

So we tasted some cakes, including:

  1. Red velvet with cream cheese frosting.
  2. Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
  3. The most delicious strawberry cake ever with yummy buttercream frosting. While it is not really appropriate for a fall wedding, I think it would be mad yummy for a shower, hint hint hint hint HINT. (I’m looking at you, sister of mine.)
  4. Double chocolate cake.
  5. French vanilla cake.
  6. Fluffy light chiffon orangey cake that my work mom really loved.

And we chatted about the special, and what to do, and how I’m not really super into cake, so while it would be nice to have some type of wedding cake for looks and cutting purposes, I really am not into it enough to spend five hundred American dollars on it.

So. Our consultant came back and I told it to her straight. I told her I had been here last year and already put a deposit down on an “on special” cake then, but then we decided to push the wedding back a year so we got our deposit back. I told her I wasn’t even that into cake, so while their cakes were lovely and yummy, um, spending $500 was a bit insane for something I didn’t really care about. And, I told her we were having a brownie buffet anyway (because, hello, brownies are so yummy), so we didn’t even need $500 worth of cake.

She said, “Let me go talk to someone. I’ll be right back.” And this is where I realized we were negotiating. Oh Lord, help me, am I bad at negotiating! I get all sweaty and I stammer a lot and usually end up with a worse deal than what I started out with. Le sigh. Again.

It ended up being OK, though. They waived the $500 minimum, so we are now getting a smaller three-tiered cake (six inches, eight inches, ten inches), which is enough to feed 50 people at $5 a slice. (Interestingly enough, I think it is actually enough to feed 80 based on the ad I posted here, but they only charged us for 50. Hmmmmm…) So that’s $250. They are throwing in a milk-glass stand for free, which is awesome because I can use the two other milk-glass stands I have for the brownies! I also ordered a groom’s cake, which I will tell you about at another time because someone’s future husband sometimes reads this blog. And we haven’t decided on the final flavor or design yet, but they told me they have a pumpkin chocolate chip flavor that is super popular. I guess we’ll have to find time to go back and taste that when it is available. Darn.

So, I guess it all worked out in the end. I do think Sugarland should modify their ad to say something like “Some exceptions apply.” Apparently, some other brides were very angry when they learned they were not able to get the special. And it looks like we will now have multiple kinds of brownies, a wedding cake, and a groom’s cake. Oh, and s’mores too. Sheesh, I hope our guests like sweets!

Have you ever run into an “exception” or other problems when planning your wedding because your wedding falls on a popular weekend?

I could make a meal out of your desserts! Way to go and negotiate with the bakery to get what you needed. :) One of the dates we originally considered was dubbed “the most popular date in May,” and a lot of the prices reflected that.

I just have to say that pumpkin chocolate chip is pretty much my favorite flavor combination EVER.

Great job on negotiations. That is how we got our photographer.

I was walking down Franklin today (obviously buying new UNC gear to wear while watching the game tonight) and saw Sugarland. I thought of you and thought “ohhh, WeddingBee, how you connect people.” haha

Good negotiating skills!

Nice negotiating — even if it was by accident! Sounds like they’re smart enough to know it’s better to sell a $250 cake than no cake at all.

I’m getting married the Saturday of July 4 weekend, and my makeup artist charges a $100 “holiday weekend” fee above her already-high bridal makeup rate. I’m tempted to shop around some more, but this is Alaska, options are limited, and she came highly recommended (plus she appears to be the only makeup artist in town who specializes in airbrushing rather than mineral makeup). I was thinking of paying for all my bridesmaids’ makeup, but with the extra fee, it just becomes ridiculously expensive, so I’m going to leave it up to them whether or not they want to pay to have their makeup done. Now I’m wondering if she’d waive that fee if she knew it was making the difference between five guaranteed sales and no guaranteed sales…

Now I’m curious as to what the 8 weekends are… Good job standing your ground.

@thefuturemrs.o: Holy cow, I was walking down Franklin Street today TOO. Weird. You would think we would have some bee radar or something that activates… :-)
@UrbanAlaskan: Where are you from in Alaska?
@LGenz: Yeah, me too…and if that IS such a thing, or if they just invented it….
@JNWhite: Work moms are totally awesome, right?
@Miss Ostrich: Uh huh, sugar overload!
@Mrs. Earrings: I’ll ship you a brownie! :-)

@Miss Magic: Anchorage. Which is a pretty good-sized city… but when it comes to wedding vendors, choices are still pretty limited. And people fall down dead of shock and then turn into dust if you say you’re inviting more than 200 people to your wedding. I thought we’d never find a caterer who understood us.

I love your unintentional negotiating tactics. Also, are you giving out brownies now? Because, you know… Brownies… ;)

Strawberry cake with buttercream icing — you’re only encouraging my raging sweet tooth late at night. ;) If you ever, and I mean ever, want help tasting cake, I’m your girl! How funny that you’ve wound up with four (!!) different types of dessert. Make sure you have doggie bags for your guests’ leftovers!

I am so glad you were able to get the cake at a decent price. This is an area where we are looking to cut in our budget.

As a vendor that makes cakes (just made one this morning) I am more than happy to help brides/grooms that are not pushy and have a glass half full approach to the wedding. Miss Magic, you sound like a wonderful bride to work with and one that is actually grateful for the discount rather than assume they should get it. And yes, Sugarland was a bit in the wrong by not having a little bit of fine print somewhere on their advertisement. Plus, now you get to pick whatever flavor combination you want.

Oh cake woes. I’m glad you were able to stand your ground without too much stammering. Maybe enough other angry brides made the owners not want to cause too much of a stir! :)

We originally planned our wedding on a non-home game in Columbus, but then the football divisions were (randomly??) redrawn after we put the deposit down on our venue and our wedding date happens to be a home game with the new schedule. Exactly what we planned to avoid!

Not only does this make the traffic CRAZY in Columbus for our out of town guests… complete with highways shutting down, but half (or more) of my relatives are crazy enough about my wedding that they will either skip it or demand a tv with the game play during the wedding. Le sigh indeed.

We are at least hoping now that the game is a late afternoon or early evening game (to be decided later by the football gods) because our wedding is from 9am-3pm. Here’s hoping!

Nothing ever IS as easy as it should be with wedding planning.

That’s awesome. Glad to hear bad news turned into moderately good news. Wow, sweets overload. I guess people will be dancing the night away at the reception.

Glad you are getting your cake! We had to completely change our wedding date because everything was double or triple the price. We wanted to get married on NYE and we live in New Orleans. So, finding a venue we could afford was proving impossible plus all of the vendors we were interested in either wouldn’t work on NYE or charged such high rates we could never afford them. So, now we are getting married on the 30th which really is turning out to be a better choice anyway. We will be able to spend NYE with all of our old college friends and spend some one on one time we won’t get at the actual wedding.
