About Mrs. Hyena

A Dress Story

March 25th, 2011 @ 8:45 am by Mrs. Hyena

I planned to go dress shopping with Mom Hyena, Aunt Hyena, and my MOH, Hyena Sis. As luck would have it, Bridesmaid J was also in town, so she came too!

I didn’t have too many requirements for a dress, although I wanted something simple and not huge. I don’t want to look like a princess; I want to look like me, except more awesome. Also, I know this probably isn’t a popular opinion, but the dress is not the highest priority for me. I didn’t want to spend a ton on something I would wear once, and my future daughter won’t want to wear because it’ll be “out of date.” Getting ahead of myself much?

The five of us headed down to this little boutique in a ’burb of Dallas, Bridal Designs. (Of course, the boutique wouldn’t allow pictures until after a purchase. I also didn’t notice until just now, but I have no idea what the brands of any of the other dresses I tried on were. It might not have helped anyway, as the dress I bought was mislabeled.)

Note to brides who haven’t dress shopped yet: If you want opinions, bring people who will give you opinions. Bridesmaid J told me what she thought of all of them, which I appreciated. Mom Hyena and Aunt Hyena didn’t say anything about any of them, but I could hear them whispering each time I went back in the fitting room to try on a new one. I wasn’t looking for everyone’s approval, but I wanted to know if people really didn’t like them! When I came out in the one I ultimately purchased, it was the first time I got an opinion out of them. Aunt Hyena declared it “the one” and “perfect,” and when the salesgirl whipped out a veil and a faux bouquet for me to hold, I agreed. It was only after we decided to buy that they told me that my number-two choice was totally unflattering! What good is it to bring people who won’t tell you these things?!

Anyway, I love my dress, and I’ve only seen three other brides online that have the same dress (so it’s unique, which I also love). Awesome! It’s from Mori Lee’s Blu collection, #4602:

Work it! (all personal photos)

Did anyone else purchase their dress on their first trip?

SO pretty! My dress is a Mori Lee as well and I haven’t seen a single girl with the same one (yet!) which I love! :) I tried on my dress not thinking it’d be something I wear, but the salesgirl..who was awesome!!, begged me to because she thought it’d be perfect! Who knew a stranger would know me so well! I went home without it and told myself, if in a month Im still thinking about it, it’s the one! Sure enough, I bought it!

your dress is pretty! I got my dress too! and my wedding is not until June 2012! I went with my future mother in law, can’t decide with the two dresses that I picked out. I told myself, I need to sleep on it, went back the next day, did not pick either of the two dresses, I saw this lace dress and I told the saleslady, I wanted to try it on, and when I put that dress, I cried, I knew, “this is my dress” :)

So happy you found your dress on the first trip! I loved Mori Lee dresses and tried on a few. :-) It took over 6 shopping trips and nearly 30 dresses to find the one and I wish I found it on the first try. They get more stressful as they go. I had the same thing with my bridemaids and family. I either got no advice or WAY too much. I ultimately bought my dress on my trip alone after getting blown off by my bridesmaid. Best thing ever!

I purchased on my first trip out too. I had zero intention, but it was about the 10th dress I put on and I just knew it was perfect!

I bought one the first time out, and at the 2nd store. (Yay david’s!) Then 3 months later, I just couldn’t stand some things about the dress. A month after that, I went back to David’s Bridal and found a dress that TOTALLY feels like me. (Fortunatetly the first dress was off the rack and cheap–but that may actually have made me buy too hastily in the first place).

Beautiful dress! I think you made the right choice.

It took me a little while to find mine 3 different trips and 12 dresses later I found my dress and I have never seen it on any other bride in white (it’s usually shown in red).

Congratulations on finding your dress so quickly! Deep down, I knew I wanted to try on many dresses until I was satisfied there wasn’t anything else I liked better. The process didn’t take as many store/dresses as I expected it to.
