Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

Signs and Equations

March 26th, 2011 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Magic

As I’ve mentioned a few (gabillion) times, I don’t do math. (Interestingly enough, since I am the one doing most of the wedding planning, I am also the one in charge of the money and budget. Hilariously scary. But that will be a post for another time…probably about two months before the wedding, when I realize we are wayyyyyyy over budget.)

Anyway, I don’t do math. Or money. Numbers of any kind, really. I’m not very good at following any type of calculated plan, and that’s kind of what creating a wedding is: adding together a bunch of elements to equal something amazing and romantic and fun and personal.

It’s something like this:

(details + decisions + projects - worry - tears + photos x alcohol x unknown)

Wedding

Today I am obsessing about the elements that need to be added together to make a good tablescape. Normally when I throw a party the table is covered in brightly colored bowls and containers and food, like this.

Somehow, I think this is not gonna go at our wedding.

When I went to look at the (g)linens, the ladies there were really stoked about my milk glass, but also mentioned that maybe I would like to add “something else” to the table. Unknown table elements = immediate stress for this bride.

So now, the equation for our tables looks like this:

Signs and Equations : wedding chapel hill decor Photo 601 Signs and Equations : wedding chapel hill decor Img 01604 Signs and Equations : wedding chapel hill decor Img 01605 Signs and Equations : wedding chapel hill decor 20051022203016!Question Mark Alternate http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/f/f3/20051022203016!Question_mark_alternate.png +Signs and Equations : wedding chapel hill decor 20051022203016!Question Mark Alternate http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/f/f3/20051022203016!Question_mark_alternate.png

= Awesome Tables!!!

I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, y’all, but even I know we need to solve for the unknown here, so we’re starting with signs!

No, not these sines!

Chalkboard signs! I’m envisioning smallish ones on each table with that table’s name and a brief description.

Option 1: Shabby chic. I kinda hate that phrase, but I think it describes these whitewashed, weathered signs perfectly. Cute, right?

Option 2: Neutral and low key.

Option 3: No border. This would be propped up on a small easel.

Option 4: Brightly colored and quirky! I kinda love this one. I feel like the fancy-ish linens (Glinen! Sorry, I cannot say/type it without the jazz-hands emphasis!) and the vintage-y silverware is taking us to another level of poshness, and it scares me. This brings the quirk back in.

Option 5: Oh snap, y’all! They went old school with green chalkboard paint!

Option 6: More ornate frames painted in different colors.

OK, so no, it isn’t rocket science and thank God for that! But I really do need some help making a decision so that me and my lil’ sis can crank these out over the holidays.

Question 1: Black chalkboard paint or green?

Question 2: What type of frame? Borderless, wooden, painted, metal, shabby chic? And if painted, what color?

Question 3: What was your least favorite subject? I bet it was stupid math.

*Just posting that pic made me feel a bit nauseous. This is how strong my aversion to math truly is.

I love chalkboards! I feel like they always look great no matter what.

I love the pink one. It will bring a splash of whimsical loveliness in my humble opinion. Good luck in the decesion making process. Oh, and I like black chalkboards.

I think chalkboards are a great idea. I would go for the black chalkboard paint and that pink frame or perhaps the last blue/green one… I loved those.

My least favorite subject was spelling. Definitely not math, considering I now have my MS in math

I think a black chalkboard with an ornate frame painted in a quirky colour would look awesome, but, as Knitting said, chalkboards tend to end up looking great no matter what!
Oh and math was my least favourite too…ugh.

I like option 4. I love the chalkboard idea. I’m hoping to use this someday. I was just thinking of something simple and neutral, but I love the different frames in fun colors. Remember that they all don’t have to look the same if you don’t care about the uniformity. Color the frames the same colors as the flowers and have different colors on the different tables.

They’re all lovely, but my favorite is Option #6! Math makes my head hurt, which snowballed into subjects like Physics (and even Chemistry) making my “dislike” list.

Chalkboards are definitely winning right now :)

1) I would go with the black chalkboard because there’s a little more contrast, which makes writing more legible.

2) I vote for a wooden frame if it’s available. Painted. (Unless the wood already looks nice; my rule is to never paint good-looking wood). Natural, white, or your brightest wedding color.

3) Handwriting. Does that count as a subject? I was and am awful in it.

I like the very last green one! Go with what works best for you. Its a fun idea whatever way you run with it. A border/wooden frame will definitely help dress it up a bit and it sounds like you’re hoping to make a pop.

What are the colors for your wedding/bridesmaids etc?

Keep it quirky! (And yes, math was my least favorite subject.)

I love the quirky brightly colored frame and black chalkboard paint look! So very you! Personally, my least favorite was Chemistry… Blech!

I love the black chalkboard with a bright painted frame! You could even make them really simply with an old frame and chalkboard paint- and do purple to keep with your color scheme!

and yes, math was my least favorite. I was sooo glad I didn’t have to take any in college.

Question 1: Black pain!

Question 2: Painted frames, in various shades of that purple in your flowers.

Question 3: Also stupid math. Math makes no sense!

So I am totally awful with numbers… I’m so bad at math I’m actually a running joke at work. Anyway, my point was that I feel ya. ;)

i dislike numbers with a passion as well. thankfully the mister will be helping me keep an eye on the budget when we start planning. and yes, i kind of picked my college partly based upon whether or not i needed to take a math course for my major. i did not.

but, i love the black chalkboards myself with a frame. i tend to be a minimalist to a certain random degree, so i lean towards unpainted, unless its already painted. does that make sense? i hope so cuz i don’t know how else to explain myself. if you were to find ornate frames, which would be totally fun, i’d paint them all the same color, in white. see. i’m so boring.

one last thing: i totally cannot read glinen without the jazz hands either.
