Mrs. Lox's Picture
Mrs. Lox, Baltimore Age and Occupation: 33, Government Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35. IT Consultant Engagement Date: May 8, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m an East Coast gal born and bred and a suburban brat turned city rat for the last year. Now Mr. Lox and I enjoy walking all kinds of places, having the coolest things around in our backyard, and especially our garage parking. I love gadgets, toys, Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream, monkeys, and our insane cats. I’m a blonde by birth and a redhead by choice. I’m that girl in the cubicle farm with all the cool toys and the file cabinet covered in magnetic poetry. I still use smiley faces in my emails, whether people like it or not. This is not the first rodeo for Mr. Lox nor me. And together, we are planning an intimate afternoon wedding on a budget we can afford by ourselves.
About Mrs. Lox

License to Wed

March 28th, 2011 @ 5:51 pm by Mrs. Lox

Now that we’re under the two month mark, I swear to you, I think of something new at least once a week. And every time I do, it’s a freaking crisis. Like OMGMr.LoxwehavetodothisRIGHTNOW! Needless to say, Mr. Lox wishes I would stop thinking of things I haven’t already written down somewhere. So would I, but that’s the way the wedding cake crumbles!

However, two weeks ago I thought of something that we should both be very glad I remembered. That’s right, our marriage license. You know, tiny little important detail without which the purpose of the day isn’t complete (!!!). So I decided to research what we needed to do to make this happen.

Before I go into what happened next, you should know that although I’ve been married before, it was never in the state of Maryland. So, you’re going to have to forgive me for this.

I already knew I needed to go to the courthouse. And I already knew the courthouse has hours that exactly mimic our jobs. So I knew some time off was in order to make this happen. No problem, you know, just take an hour or two off and the whole thing will be over. Right? Not so much.

I mean, yes, we both needed to take time off. But here’s a fun fact… Mr. Lox and I live in the city. And the Vandiver, our lovely wedding venue, is aaaaaaaall the way up in Harford County. (You already see this coming. I know you do.) And the wedding license has to be procured from the Harford County Courthouse. Which is about an hour away. Way to go Loxy.

So instead of an hour or two, we each took half a day and trekked up north to git ‘er done. After some minor snafus with parking, and a bit of crabbiness from me (because I was unknowingly coming down with strep throat it seems) we located the building and did what had to be done. There was no wait and we sat down immediately with a nice lady who would get us all set up. We were sworn in, gave her all of our information, and $40 later we had a marriage license!

License to Wed : wedding baltimore legal License We can get married now!

Somehow that makes it seem more real. Have you done the research so you know what it takes to get a marriage license where you’re getting married?

$60 here (and they tell you 99 times - CASH ONLY!). We did the research, but I still wasn’t prepared and had my first teary moment. My dad is estranged and they kept asking me his address. City? State? I DON’T KNOW! Why was that so important anyway? I’m 33 freakin’ years old!

@bebefly: Wow, it’s $67 here, but if you take a marriage prep class, you get the state portion of the fee waived, so ours will wind up at $7. I cannot believe some places charge that much!!!

Our minister will not sign marriage licenses until same-sex marriage is legal in our state. Most couples get a friend to sign theirs, since it’s really easy to get ordained, but we’re taking ours to the court house to be signed by a judge and letting them know why. It’s a bit of additional hassle, but we’ve decided it’s worth it to stand on the side of love.

That is such a good picture of ya’ll! You should totally frame it and frame the license and hang them next to each other :)

Around $50 for us… unless we cant make the timing work (out-of-state) then we have to go to appear in front of a judge 2 days before the wedding and spend who-knows how much time and money to get it… I sure hope we’re in the state within 2 months of the wedding!

@ Miss Tartlet,

$20.00 fee and a three day wait. You have to apply for your license in what ever county you live in (not the county you are getting married in if different from where you live) pay $20.00 and 3 days later you get to pick up your license.

I KNOW. Isn’t it awful? It’s because we’re in a major city so they jack up the prices.

However, since there’s no residency requirements in my province, I’m free to get the license wherever. Right now I’m researching small(er) towns within a 20-minute radius to see if I can a better deal. So far I’ve found a couple for 100$. Um, YES PLEASE.
