Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

OK, if you aren’t into couponing (which you really, really should be—it is not as much work or as time consuming as you might imagine!) and you already use Groupon and Living Social to get some awesome deals, here is yet another way to save some money!

We all shop online, right? What if I told you that for almost every purchase you make online, you can get 2% to 10%, on average, cash back in the form of a check that is mailed to you? And, it’s legal.

It’s super duper freaking easy! Join either Ebates or Upromise. Every time you want to make an online purchase, log in to one of those sites first, and then click over to the store from their site. You will automatically get a certain percentage of cash back on your order, and it is mailed to you in a check every three months or so.

I have been a member of Ebates since 2009, and for a while I forgot to use it. This past Christmas, though, I did all my shopping online, and soon I will be getting a check for $31.63! Just for shopping online!

Have you used Ebates or Upromise, or are you going to start using them now?

I love eBates! I just have to remember to use it. I’ve kicked myself so many times after making big purchases and forgetting to do it through eBates!!

If you have a Discover card, Discover has a similar program called Shop Discover (fewer retailers than ebates but the ones they do have offer a higher % back than ebates does). Another program is called My Lucky Rewards which I love. You have to be a subscriber to Lucky Magazine to use it though. Usually I collect the caps off coke bottles, log the codes into MyCokeRewards.com, and get a subscription to Lucky for free through my points. :-)

I use my Upromise when I travel for work, and the money I get back is applied directly to my school loans! It’s almost like my company is paying for my loans. Ha!

This is awesome. Where do you get most of your manufacturer’s coupons? I don’t receive a newspaper but I was thinking of subscribing for the Sunday paper. Would that be the best first move?

Another option is iGive. It is very similar to both of those sites, but instead of the percentage coming back to you it is donated to the charity of your choice. I have fostered and volunteered for a pit bull rescue for several years and iGive is such a simple way for me to support my group. Between my fiance and I, we’ve raised over $90 in just the past year. You just register with iGive, select the charity of your choice (have them register if they are not already using iGive, it’s very simple), and then you can either shop through the iGive site, or select the option that anytime you go to a shopping website that supports iGive, it lets you know what percentage of your purchase will be donated. Super easy way to raise money for the causes you care about!

Also- google for coupon codes before you purchase from any online site. I’ve saved tons that way!

I have never heard of this, but man this would have been awesome with all of the online shopping for the wedding!

@shirasagi: The Sunday paper is the best bet. The site I use, Southern Savers, tells me in advance how many coupon inserts will be in the Sunday paper (sometimes there are 0, other times 3, so it’s good to know!).

Also, you can print coupons too. That’s kind of time consuming, but still worthwhile. Go to Southern Savers and click on “Printables”…there are many links to coupons that can be used all over the country!

Yes! I discovered ebates just before Christmas and it is awesome! I always check if I can use ebates before I make an online purchase. Love that there is cash back with eBay wins!

The trick is remembering to go through those sites, which I fail to do most of the time. Also, some mileage plans have a similar program. I am an Alaska Airlines member and I get miles by using their shopping site that I can use on their flights or their partners. Hello free honeymoon flight!

I freaking love ebates! I have been buying so much stuff on line for the wedding, presents for BM’s, honeymoon stuff, and my last ebates check was $136! It is so worth it. and Groupon too…I have gotten a lot of wedding stuff for super cheap with Groupons. Best one was the $15 Groupon for $115 photo book from Photobook America. I got an absolutely beautiful photo guest book made with it!
