Mrs. Cotton Candy's Picture
Mrs. Cotton Candy, Riverside, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Field Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 34, Process Server Engagement Date: July 5, 2007 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Riverside Art Museum About Me: I’m a girl in love with her best friend planning a small mid-century modern inspired wedding that’s been a long time coming. I love all things design, sewing, flea markets, and a good book. I’ve been known to swoon over a well-designed chair and often find myself craving a new addition to my chair collection regardless of the lack square footage in our home. I’m Mexican American girl who hates all things spicy but loves her rowdy Mexican family and her Latin roots. My wedding muses may not be your typical wedding superstars, but with a lot of DIY, a dash of offbeat style, and lots of love and laughs, Mr. Cotton and I plan to create a day that is unmistakably us.
About Mrs. Cotton Candy

Mr CCandy and I don’t have a “song.”  If pressed we’d probably say Why Can’t We Be Friends by War but more for comedic reasons than sentimental. Couple our lack of song with our taste in music that tends to favor rock, and we have a potential case of inappropriate first dance songs.

The first song we considered for our first dance was You Really Got a Hold of Me by She & Him (also considered by the lovely Mrs Ribbons). It’s truly a beautiful song and the length is perfect for a first dance but I’m not sure the lyrics “I don’t like you but I love you” and “Oh ho ho you treat me badly” are the message we want to send during our dance.

Up next is The New by Interpol. Besides being one of our all-time favorite bands I love the lyrics but the song is super long and the instrumental that starts around the 3 minute mark can get a little intense.

And finally we have Summertime by My Chemical Romance. This song makes me happy. I love the us against the world vibe it has but I’m a little concerned about the speed of the music and I’m not sure I want to go so Emo for our first dance.

My heart is leaning towards the She & Him song but I’m torn between the not so wedding friendly lyrics and my love of the music. What do you think we should do? She would say eff it and go with the song we love even though the lyrics aren’t appropriate or should we keep looking?

We went with what meant the most to us, rather than what other people think about the lyrics. Our first dance wasn’t that “romantic” or “wedding appropriate” but it meant a lot to us. Most people didn’t even pay attention to the lyrics. Go with what you want/love!

You could always do the second one and have your DJ cut it off early and open dancing to all your guests to shorten it.

Okay, the one thing I wish I had changed was my enterance song. Instead of going with what I wanted, I listened to others. I wanted to walk into Nirvana played by Vitamin String Quartet, but gave in and walked to the Beatles. I’m seriously still upset about this. It’s my second biggest regret of the wedding. The first was hiring an officiant who showed up 45 minutes late. Go with your gut and ignore what people think.

Oh, our first dance was “Feeling Good” by Michael Buble. It’s about a break up if you pay attention to every single lyric, but we both loved it and loved dancing to it.

Personally, I’m a lyric freak so I would get hung up on the not-so-appropriate lines myself, but I’ve learned that most people pay no attention to lyrics aside from the chorus. So I think if you really love that song, you should go for it.

Keep in mind that whatever song you do pick, its meaning will be forever changed for you. Every time my husband and I hear our first dance song, we are taken right back to that moment and we usually can’t help but get up and dance to it. No matter what song you choose, be sure you’re prepared for the permanence of its meaning for the rest of your lives!

Our first dance song will be to John Mayer’s cover of “Freefallin’” by Tom Petty - we don’t anything that is ‘our song’, so we’re choosing to go with something that means something to us, and makes us happy when we hear it. I say do what makes you two happy; if it means something to you, who cares what the lyrics say!

For the “Don’t like you but I love you” quandry.

I don’t always like my fiance. Love? Always.

@bebefly: Love it!

I will say, I don’t think your first dance song has to be a slow one! Our was to Sonny and Cher’s I Got You Babe, which is not slow, and it was great! Granted, we invited everyone out there with us so it was a little different but still…

@Mrs. Trail Mix: Agreed! We had our DJ create a mash that started out with a corny slow song (Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are”), and we came out dancing like two high school kids. He even put his hands on my hips and we swayed side to side - I could barely keep a straight face. After 10-15 seconds, he added a loud record scratch sound and then went into “Pride and Joy” by Stevie Ray Vaughn. Half way through that, we started pulling people onto the dance floor. It was a blast!

Choose a song that makes the two of you happy, and reflects your personalities. (Certainly you’ve used this mindset to choose the rest of your wedding details.) Some guests may know the lyrics, but most likely the “older folks” won’t, but no matter…they’ll all be focused on the two of you with your arms around each other.

Perhaps a silly recommendation - but have you looked into other She & Him songs? I personally would recommend Home (though it’s from Volume Two). I really love it!!! I think perhaps you’re also from California? and the song mentions that in the beginning - Not sure on the rest of the lyrics, but it does say “I think you’re the nicest, nicest boy I’ve ever met” which may be appropriate for a wedding :) It sounds quite similar in my opinion! Maybe try it out - here is the link to the youtube clip! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6ir0S4v3is

Having the same problem as you!! We were also considering She & Him’s “You Really Got a Hold on Me” but decided against it because of the lyrics. Still looking for a song– for now we’re keeping in mind Cat Power’s “Sea of Love,” Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon,” Regina Spektor’s cover of “Real Love,” and Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.” I’m still hoping we’ll have a magic moment when we listen to song and just know it’s the one, haha. My advice is to dance to a few songs with your man and decide then :).

MCR!!!! Do it! LOVE LOVE LOVE MCR.

Currently, I am fighting the battle to first dance to Plain White T’s “Rhythm of Love”. I love it, and it makes me happy, but FI can.not get over the fact that the lyrics suggest it’s about a one-night stand. Nobody’s gonna know is what I say. Boo on his music snobbery!

I like your first choice. It’s got classic appeal with a twist. Zooey’s voice is so enchanting I don’t think anyone will pay attention to the lyrics. They’ll be too busy watching you two dance and dabbing their eyes!

Most people have no idea what the lyrics to songs are, beyond the words that make up the title. We’ve banned Sweet Home Alabama from our playlist (we’re big lefties) but no one in the world knows the difference. Go with the one that feels right to you!
