Mrs. Jam's Picture
Mrs. Jam, Chicago Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Associate Wedding Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Structural Engineer Engagement Date: December 23, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Hunter’s Ridge, Princeton, IL About Me: I’m a penny-pinching cat lady getting ready to marry the frugal dog lover of my dreams. Our ideal Saturday morning includes rummaging around people’s junk at garage and estate sales followed by an afternoon date to our favorite café, where we only eat sandwiches that include the word “salad.” We actually love it so much, it’s sort of our unofficial wedding theme: Look at our delicious finds, eat homemade ham salad, and celebrate our love…barndance style. When we’re not obsessing over our love-fest shindig, we’re planning themed parties for our best friends and jamming to '90s music.
About Mrs. Jam

That’s right, hive, the honeymoon is officially planned and it couldn’t be more perfect if the heavens above planned it for us (unless the heavens above also paid for it, which would be pretty tough to beat). Remember our planning confusion and too many possible ideas in our heads? It’s all out the window in favor of…

…our ALL-AMERICAN ROAD TRIP! (Matching fanny packs and binoculars hanging around our necks are not optional; they’re necessary.)

The first stop on the Tuesday morning following the wedding will be Vegas:

Neither of us has ever been to Vegas, so it’s likely we will eat, dance and gamble our way through two sleepless nights in Sin City, eventually succumbing to sensory overload or a drained bank account. Let’s just seriously hope it’s not the latter. All-you-can-eat buffets and bedazzled showgirls and magicians, here we come!

Next, we’ll leave Vegas at an ungodly hour on Thursday morning to rent a car and drive 45 minutes to see the Hoover Dam:

This is where the fanny packs and binoculars will really come in handy…and the chewing gum. Can’t really forget about that, just in case.

When the tour is over that afternoon, we’ll hop back in the rental car and drive four hours to the Grand Canyon:

I could pee my pants right now just looking at the pictures of the Grand Canyon online, so I can hardly imagine how I’ll feel when we’re right there. And thanks to old movies and TV shows that took place around the Grand Canyon, we’re going to go on a mule tour, because it’s embedded in my brain that no Canyon trip is complete without one.

Then we’ll hop in the rental car again (but slowly, because we’ll obviously be sore from riding mules all day) and drive to New Mexico:

We’ll explore and travel from Albuquerque and Santa Fe until we drop…or until we have to fly out on Monday or Tuesday. I’m anticipating Native American culture and history, fantastic jewelry and artists’ markets, and plenty of delish Southwestern food.

My prediction: Mr. Jam will have to drag me to the airport kicking and screaming, and I will cry.

And before we know it, we’ll be back in good ol’ Illinois:

Who needs a gorgeous, peaceful, all-inclusive beach getaway when you could spend tons of hours exploring, driving and living out of a suitcase with the one you love?

If you were going on a road trip, what would be on your must-see list? Or would you rather chew your own arm off than spend hours in a car during your honeymoon? And if you’ve been to (or live in!) any of these places, you MUST spill your guts about the best sights…bonus points if it includes stopping to see a giant ball of twine or visiting places that require a fanny pack!

We saw Jubilee when we were in Vegas, it’s one lof the last topless showgirl type of show. Don’t worry we sat right down in front and no boobs hit us! LOL..It’s very tasteful and the girls are all like a A cup. Hoover Dam is very cool as well! Make sure to go to Seripendity ( spelled wrong peobably) to eat!

God Bless you; I made FH agree to a resort honeymoon where I can sit on my ass in a lounge chair for 6 days and not do a thing if I don’t want to. I have a feeling the week before the wedding is just going to wipe me out.

We’re from Chicago and are going west this June! Our stops will be St. Louis, Las Vegas, LA, San Diego, Chula Vista, Phoenix, back to Chicago! Good thinking on flying to Las Vegas…. I could do without the 24 hour car ride! Your honeymoon sounds AMAZING!

Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe is gorgeous!! The mystery of the Spiral Staircase. And the Sandia Peak tramway gives amazing views. I agree with you that the mule ride is necessary in the Grand Canyon!!! A road trip Honeymoon just sounds so cozy and romantic!

I’m sure Mr. Jam is gonna go crazy at the Hoover Dam especially since the bridge is finished! My hubby (who’s a civil engineer) went last year and there were more dam pictures than vegas pictures!

I HIGHLY recommend checking out Tent Rocks on your way between ABQ and SF. It’s a super-easy hike* that gives you the most visual bang for your hiking buck of any I’ve encountered. It takes less than an hour to get to the top, and you go through the most amazing, weird rock formations while you’re doing it. Have a picnic at the top with an amazing view of the New Mexico high desert and then come back down and be on your way.

*It’s so easy I almost hesitate to call it a hike, but there is at least one part where you’re gaining elevation. :D

You’ve got something awesome planned. I did the Vegas-Hoover Dam-Grand Canyon Trip with my parents and brother a few years ago.. I was 22 at the time. Going to a topless show with your parents, not all that awesome.

Thoughts… you may not be out there long enough, but bring a body scrub. You’re body will thank you.

Also, The Grand Canyon is way colder than Vegas. Bring a nice warm hoodie and stay for the sunset. If I remember correctly, there isn’t much in the way of gas between flagstaff and the grand canyon, make sure you have enough to go out and back.

Flagstaff has part of the original Rt. 66. There is also a decent pizza place there and a fun tourist shop.

There is an awesome stop somewhere between the dam and the canyon! It’s a little town called Oatman, it’s a total tourist trap but not in a bad way. Burros wander around and you can feed them with carrots and they have a ‘gun fight’ once a day. Clark Gable and Carol Lombard went there on part of their honeymoon too! We did the whole Vegas/Grand Canyon vacation and this was by far the most memorable part. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oatman,_Arizona

My fiance and I did this trip in December! Well, minus Vegas, but still - it was so much fun! You MUST stay overnight in the wigwam motel: http://www.galerie-kokopelli.com/wigwam/ It’s only $55/night, and it’s right on Rt. 66 in between the Grand Canyon and Albuquerque. Enjoy!

That sounds SO fun! I love the Southwest. I also LOVE the food in New Mexico. Eat lots of sopapillas! New Mexico is one of my favorite states. If you can, I recommend visiting the Taos Pueblo. You’re going to have tons of fun during that trip and see everything from modern marvels in Vegas to ancient cultures in the US.

eek I did this road trip with the SO last year! (except in reverse… we started in the east coast, and flew out of Las Vegas at the end.
My recommendations:
- Don’t forget the North Rim of the Grand Canyon! all the touristy stuff is at the South Rim, but if you want to enjoy a gorgeous sunset with just your sweetie… the North Rim is the unspoiled pristine place to be.
- The Dale Balls Trails in Santa Fe are really pretty at sunset, and you can choose a a really simple hike if you want.
- If you have any time at all to do it… take a turn up to Utah and visit the awesome clump of National Parks there– Arches NP in Moab, Bryce Canyon NP, and Zion!! So gorgeous, and if you can fit them in, look into getting a National Park pass for the two of you to share. It’s good for a year, and pays itself off after a couple of parks.
- And if you are using a GPS to guide your way… don’t forget that they adjust for Arizona’s non-participation in Daylight Savings. Our GPS ETA through us off until we remembered that…

Have fun! eat amazing food in Las Vegas bc you will be losing it all running around the GC!

I live in Williams, AZ, a tiny little town which is basically the last stop before the Grand Canyon. So first off, in Vegas or in Kingman, AZ (the only town between Vegas and Williams) you must eat at In n Out Burger. But first, wikipedia the “secret menu.” I definitely suggest “animal style” anything…it’s bomb.
Next, if you really wanna get the cowboy-hick experience, there’s a bar in Williams called “The World Famous Sultana.” There are no less than EIGHT dead animal carcasses strapped to the walls. Plus shuffleboard. And everyone will be wearing hunting gear and cowboy hats. It’s crazy.
Have fun!!!!!
