Mrs. Ostrich, San Francisco/Hawaii Age and Occupation: 30, Fashion Buyer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 38, Copywriter Engagement Date: October 4, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Sweet ceremony by the sea and sunset celebration on the North Shore of Hawaii About Me: Born in the city of angels and residing in the city by the bay, I’m a fearless fashion buyer by day, a passionate blog author by night and a dreamy bride-to-be in between. I thank my lucky stars to live in such a stunning city that gives me gifts like organic honey lavender ice cream, movie nights in the park, tucked away beaches, legendary record stores, '80s dance parties, awesome sports teams, stellar flea markets, and vintage bookshops. Oh, and I love to dance! We always find every excuse to escape to the beach, and decided a little seaside wedding in Hawaii is our idea of bliss. Full of our favorite people, music, food and sparkly lights, this is one sunset celebration we will always remember.

iPod vs. DJ - What Would You Do? : wedding hawaii music 124 1

This post goes out to my music lovin’ brides out there. :)

When the wedding planning bonanza began, and after seeing the outrageous wedding DJ rates (DUDE), we chose the iPod DJ route. We made a looooong, radical list of our fave tunes, asked our wedding peoples for their “OMGthissongismyJAM!” songs, loaded this list up into 4 separate playlists—ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dancing—and made a “bust out in case of emergency” backup CD. Oh, and one of my favorite high school pals volunteered to be our emcee! It was way too easy.

And up until now, I’ve been a straight shootin’ bride.

Make a choice, don’t look back! But as the days dwindled down and I read this thought-provoking Weddingbee board post, seeds of doubt were planted in my wedding brain…and they grew grew grew. And before you knew it, the bridal nightmares returned full force…about our wedding peoples listening to the entire length of one of our dance songs and looking like this:

iPod vs. DJ - What Would You Do? : wedding hawaii music Wallflo Wallflo

“’80s, Motown and hip hop? LAME”

One HUGE plus of hiring a DJ—or band—for your special day is they have an innate ability to read the crowd and flex the song list to keep the party goin’ all night long. Like, if people run on the dance floor for Billy Idol’s  Dancing With Myself, Mr. DJ-guy would probably mix it up with Modern English’s Melt With You and round out the ’80s set with Erasure’s super awesome A Little Respect.

But what if the ’80s weren’t doin’ it? iPod DJ would have no clue and would keep playing the songs one by one, and our guests would make a feeble attempt to shuffle along to the beat…or, my worst nightmare, stand around and just talk to each other. But real, living breathing Mr. DJ-guy could quickly scan the dance floor and within a minute, pump up the bass with a little Paper Planes remix…and all would be good again. :)

And my fears of Mr. DJ-guy hijacking our song list and playing all his own awful, cheesy stuff? This isn’t the case for all wedding DJs, only the terrible ones. We (ok, I - who am I kidding?) found out that there are a lot of said record spinners/iTunes mixers that will ONLY play the songs you list, if you’re into something like that. It turns out, these Wedding DJ-guys aren’t horrible—they’re your dance party shepherds.

But they still cost $$$$—well, the good ones that have awesome reviews from past brides, at least. And now that Mr. O and I agreed to abandon Operation iPod DJ, we were on the hunt for a super awesome, flexible and reasonably-priced DJ that was available—less than 2 months away—for our wedding.

I shot some hail mary emails to a few of our top choices and held my breath (I think I even prayed). And then I got the email that made me yelp as loudly as the day I got accepted as a bee. Our numero uno DJ pick, the amazingly talented and incredibly awesome DJ Tony So, said he was available. And within minutes, he gave me a call…we hit it off instantly…and he said he’d be honored to be the music maestro for our big day. And even better? He was the magic behind the dance party craze at Mrs. Piglet’s wedding, too! It was Weddingbee fate. :)

So the contract has been signed and DJ Tony is officially on Team Ostrich Wedding. And I’m thrilled because that investment gave us peace of mind. But every now and then, I still wonder if we could’ve pulled off the best iPod wedding of all time. Maybe. I know they exist! But it wasn’t worth the stress for this wedding duo. But I’d still love to be an iPod DJ for someone else’s wedding one day. ;)

Sooooo, the great debate: iPod DJ or real, human Mr. DJ-guy? OR, if you’re pulling out all the stops, a live band??? What did you choose to make sweet music at your wedding? I’m dying to know!

I’m doing an iPod DJ… The cost just isn’t worth it in my opinion, even with your marvelous debate :)

I originally didn’t even think of getting a DJ. We’re doing the DIY route for pretty much everything, and I didn’t think I wanted to pay for something like that. But like you, I changed my mind. Ours was the best priced in the area, along with being the top rated in the state (win, win!). I’m so excited to have at least one thing I won’t have to worry about on the day of!

We wanted to do the iPod as well, but alas, couldn’t do it because we were scared too. Congrats on getting your first choice!

So, so excited.

I love the phrase “dance party shepherds.” :) Great post, which took the words right outta my mouth! We went through the same discussions, and ultimately it was the peace of mind that won us over.

My brother & his girlfriend are both professional DJs. It’s an absolute no-brainer. SCORE.

After much research and debate, we (ahem, I) found a DJ… I really hope that he can pump up the crowd. I still have nightmares about the cheesy DJ or the music not working. I guess I’ll just have to let go and wait for the big day! I’m sure it will go smoothly.

I was thinking about the iPod DJ as well, but since we are having a really small wedding, opted out of having someone be our emcee. We are getting a small jazz quartet or trio!

We’re working with a DJ who gets us, “it” and music. He’s one of the few vendors I haven’t had to worry about. I’m able to sit back and relax, which is priority #1 on the wedding day.

We thought about having the IPod. I mean, starting to come up with playlists (which is crazy because our wedding is over a year away!).
But then we met a fabulous man named DJ Twinkie!
He is awesome!!!!!!!!! Plus he gave us a great deal because he knows a friend of ours. Which means he fits into our shoestring budget. I am so excited to have him because he is playful and fun.
I have to agree that paying some money for someone that can read the crowd is well worth it to have an awesome dance party for a reception. :)

Well. We are having a DJ, but the thing I never asked (but should have!) is how long said DJ will do his deejaying… For the special rate that he gave us (because he’s FI’s coworker), he’ll only be there 4 hours. And the reception is scheduled to last 6 hours. After the 4 hours, his rate jumps up, and honestly, we can’t afford more than 4 hours. SOOOO… we will hook up an ipod for the last 2 hours. But that’s a lot of time to fill :( And I’m nervous about creating playlists, because our musical tastes are verrry different. Would you at all mind leting me peek @ the songs on your list for the dance/reception part of the night, Miss O? Anybody else willing to help with their musical genius?

We decided to just go for the iPod wedding. With enough alcohol, our friends will dance to anything! ;) Plus, many of our guests love dancing no matter what, so we’re not worried.

iPod DJ totally rocks WITH a human monitoring it constantly, def. But pros do read crowds and all that stuff better (like most pros are better at whatever it is they do). Alls us Tacos did was pick songs we like, add, remove, and fight over the things on the list, and let it run its course on the day-of. It just came down to priorities, and a pro DJ wasn’t up there for us.

Sounds like it’ll work out just fine with your deej!

I considered going the iPod route too… but eventually we decided to go with a band. Sparks wasn’t ready to give up on his live music dream for our reception :)

You’re going to be so happy you went with a DJ. I am so glad we did because we really read the crowd and kept the party going.

We are going the DIY route. We have made a very extensive cokcktail hour, dinner, and reception playlist. It is accommodating to all tastes and ages since we like all kinds of music, and I will be having my younger cousin tending to the laptop. I am STILL apprehensive about it, but like Miss Hyena said - your family and friends will dance to anything the more they indulge in the liquid courage :)
