About Mrs. Panther

Pre-Wedding Pretties

March 31st, 2011 @ 6:07 pm by Mrs. Panther

I don’t have many wedding updates because I haven’t had time to work on any projects, so will you guys settle for a post about online shopping for bridal event outfits? Please? OK, good—here goes!

Following in the Panther wedding tradition of booking things waaaay in advance, my mom booked the bridal shower location last summer, even though it’s not until this June. And of course, I bought a dress immediately. Surprise, surprise!

I didn’t go into Anthropologie planning to buy a dress—in fact, I very rarely buy clothes at Anthro. I find that I always look too short in their clothing, which is weird, because I’ve seen ladies shorter than me really rock it! But anyway, I was in there with BM J-Dawg (who loves her some Anthro and looks good in everything she tries on), and I spotted what seemed like the perfect bridal shower dress.

It was a whitish shade, not too dressy but not too casual, feminine and floral. Exactly what you’d expect the bride to wear for a brunch shower, right? Plus, it fit like a dream. It was on the longer side, but I figured this ensured that no one would see up my dress while I was opening gifts. I ignored the fact that it was, well, not at all my style.

Don’t get me wrong. I love pleats. I like florals. But the top is like, ivory eyelet. I generally prefer my embellishments to consist of studs, sequins and the like. And it’s so flowy—my body looks much better in structured styles. This dress is just not me. But it seemed like what I should wear, and BM J-Dawg assured me that Anthro’s return policy would allow me to bring it back if and when I changed my mind. So, I took it home.

Now, a few months from the shower, as I sort of expected, I don’t want to wear it! Like, at all! Time to return the Anthro dress and start looking for other options. I complained to my bridesmaids that I had no clue how I was going to find something classy but edgy, daytime but not preppy, light-colored but not Lily Pulitzer … My shower is at a country club, but I don’t want to look like I belong in a country club! It’s just not me. And magically, the perfect dress appeared:

Ohhh, yes. Tibi, silk crepe de chine, gorgeous print and such pretty colors! And want to hear the best part? It’s only $50.

… Say what?! It’s true! It’s because I’m renting it!

Mrs. Cheetah has already written a post extolling the virtues of Rent the Runway, so I’ll be brief: I’m renting the dress, they’ll send me two sizes for free because I’ve never rented from that designer before, and it’s insured, so if I spill champagne all over it, it’s OK! (To an extent—the insurance only covers minor damage, of course.)

Want to see the part of the dress that makes it edgy?

Zoinks! This part makes me a little nervous. Going braless is not an option. I don’t have huge ta-tas by any means, but the girls need some support. I’m thinking I’ll need to invest in a backless NuBra. Have any of you ladies tried these? Can they handle a 34D, I hope? I’ll definitely need to try my options with a different dress before the rental comes!

I was concerned very briefly about the length of the dress, but then I saw that the model is 5’10″. I’m only 5’4″, and according to the internet, Olivia Palermo is, too. Check out the dress length on her!

It is perfect, non?

I felt that this dress just HAD to be worn with nude patent platform pumps, but Rent the Runway doesn’t do shoes, so I had to buy some. I had my sights set on the Aldo Moos, but then I spotted the Joan & David Flipps on Piperlime, and it was love at first sight. They’re BLUSH!

Love, love, love. Honestly, a 4″ heel is usually a little short for me (hey, I like to feel tall, and when you’re only 5’4″, it takes a lot!), but I figure I’ll have to do a lot of walking around and shmoozing at this shower, so a little extra comfort can’t hurt. I can’t wait for these to arrive! I really hope they fit! They’re going to look so beautiful with my rose gold clutch. I … love things. I can’t help it. Please don’t judge me.

Anyone else always find time for online shopping, no matter how busy you are?

Oooh! Rent the Runway! I am totally going to do this!
I have been eyeballing quite a few pretties in their site!
I’ve tried the nu Bra and it worked for me!
You have to make sure to apply it to clean dry skin but it works!

Panther, you’re a life saver. I’ve been staring at dresses on Rent the Runway ever since Cheetah’s post, but was worried about the height thing, too (I’m 5′3″). I feel more courageous about trying the website out, now!

That dress is fabulous. :) The back is stunning.

I love the dress, and you must wear it. However, I am also a 34D… I tried a NuBra actually, and it was a huge fail of weird-looking boobage (uncomfortable, not enough support). 2nd however - if you think back to your college days and use a roll of tape… you should be ok. I know it’s weird, but tape looked SO much better than the sticky bra. Everyone’s bust is different though - so maybe your anatomy will take to the sticky bra better!

@msstilettoheels: Hm, good to know! Thanks! :)
@Miss Candy Apple: Hopefully there will be lots of shower pics!
@Miss Tartlet: I figure if the dress looks super short on the super tall model, it’ll probably be juuust right on us shorter ladies.
@Miss Snapdragon: Ouch! What kind of tape?

I hate you all… completely kidding, but at a 32A, I have no idea what you all go through! I have the opposite problems! Although the dress is not my taste you should go for it!!! It is super fun colors and the back is to die for! I have seen tape to hold “things” at Joann fabric ( meanwhile I was looking for padded cups, of course!!)

@cc226: Dude, don’t be jealous — you can wear backless dresses!! I’ll have to look into the Joann “thing” tape. :) Thanks for the tip!

Ahhh as sad as it makes me to see an Anthro dress unloved ;) the one you picked is killer! And thanks for the tip on Rent the Runway…I think I could start a similar business with the billion dresses I’ve only worn once sitting in my closet! Ahhhh.

Super cute dress! I love the first one, but the one you’re going to wear is HOT!

i love that dress! If you look at the picture of olivia the red comes to a full point at the bottom and then it looks like there is an inch or 2 of white below the point. On the rent the runway picture the red looks like its hemmed above where olivia’s is…I feel like that one might be shorter..

@Miss Panther, your posts are always so damn fantastic, I love reading them, so, so much. I am totally convinced that if you lived closer, you and I would be best friends. We could have martinis and I could show you my brand new sky blue Louboutins that I got - on sale.

I’ve been shopping online for honeymoon clothes and swimsuits. LOVE the Tibi dress you’re going to wear. If I knew when my shower was, I’d love to RTR.

such cute style!! you are going to look amazing at your shower! That anthro dress was what I wore to my after wedding brunch and I loved it. RTR is an awesome site- i know SO many people that have had great luck with them. I also recommend the nu bra - it’s my most used post-wedding accessory!

Wide tape - gaff tape always worked best for me for staying on/doing its job. You use a few strips of tape to create a sticky bra without straps/back. I thought everyone did it! It’s a film/TV costumer’s trick - I used this trick mostly in college, when I was more scantily clad on a regular basis. ;)

Just coming back to say - try the formal sticky bra first though, in case your boobs work with it. I think it’s touchy when you’re larger than a C. Mine don’t work with regular stickies :/
