Mrs. Giraffe, ChicagoAge and Occupation: 23, Graphic DesignerFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Music Student TeacherEngagement Date: October 23, 2008Wedding Date: May 2011Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church & Idlewild Country ClubAbout Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!
I’m going to start out disclaimer-style and let you all now that I’m 100% aware of how ridiculous this post is. I mean, seriously, I am out of control here. After you finish reading this, we don’t have to mention it ever again. (Please don’t mention it ever again?)
You see…I have dish envy.
Yes, it’s true. I had a wonderfully amazing shower recently (that I still have to share with you!) and I received so many awesome gifts. I was totally overwhelmed with generosity and I can’t believe that people spent so much money on things for Lil’ Ol’ Me…oh yeah, and the Mister, too.
Mr. G and I were lucky enough to receive all the dishes we asked for. Due to Mr. G having 8 Giraffes in his immediate family, and me having 4, we wanted enough dishes so that we could have everyone over at the same time.
Long story short, we registered for four 16 piece place settings and received them all. That’s enough for 16 people! Woah. Read more…
Mrs. Knitting, TorontoAge and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD CandidateEngagement Date: October 2009Wedding Date: December 2010Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club
About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
Because I didn’t want anyone to see my dress before the wedding, I didn’t post any pictures of it here. However, now that the wedding is over, I wanted to interrupt my recaps to do a post about my dress!
I am really really proud of my dress and the fact that I found it. That’s perhaps a weird way to feel about your dress, but there you go. I had initially been a bit worried about dress shopping because it was really necessary for me to find an inexpensive dress. This was partly due to finances and partly due to the fact that for me, personally, I couldn’t justify spending a major amount on a dress.
I’ve written about my accidental dress finding experience before, but to recap, I found my ideal dress by accident a full two months before I even planned to start looking. Why was it ideal?

What was your relationship with your in-laws like before you got married? What is it like now? What were specific things that lead to an improvement/degradation of your relationship with your in-laws? Do you have any tips for people struggling with relationships with their in-laws?
When we first started dating, I really wanted my in-laws to like me. They were welcoming and nice from the beginning, but they show love differently than my family does. My family constantly shows affection and from the beginning had said multiple times how much they loved Mr. Starfish. Because I was used to an overly affectionate family, and Mr. Starfish’s is different, I wasn’t sure how they felt. As our relationship went on I learned that Mr. S’s family just worked different than mine. They show their love in different ways.
This happened long before marriage, but I think my best advice regarding in-laws is to understand that everyone is different. I’ve been very fortunate to have supportive, caring, loving in-laws who have been a wonderful part of my life. It just took me some time to understand that people show these things in different ways.
I feel that wedding planning only helped our relationship. My MIL and I started emailing a lot during the planning phase and have continued to do so after marriage. I think the engagement period strengthened our relationship. Read more…

Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NCAge and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social WorkerFiance's Age and Occupation: 30, ResearcherEngagement Date: December 1, 2009Wedding Date: October 2011Venue: Barn at ValhallaAbout Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
Get it? DecorUM? Because British folks are so proper? O-kayyyyyy…
Quick side story about England and decorum: Living in North Carolina, I am really not used to mass transportation and prefer the personal space of my car. Mass transit makes me nervous, and I usually do something stupid while I’m on a bus, train, plane, metro, etc. One time I was in London on a bus with BM Bunny and another friend of ours. The bus stopped, and I let go of the pole I was holding on to briefly. Then the bus abruptly started and I went flying down the aisle, and the only way to stop myself was to grab onto something, and what I grabbed onto happened to be an older woman’s boob. #lackofdecorum
Anyway, I know you are dying to know how we decorated for this Britsh shower. Luckily, I have a coworker who lived in England for a while. She donated most of the decor, and it was awesome. She had books, records, stuffed animals, and British cars…see?
Mrs. French Toast, Pleasanton, CAAge and Occupation: 29, Marketing & PRFiance's Age and Occupation: IT geek by day, self-proclaimed handyman by nightEngagement Date: October 2009Wedding Date: March 2011Venue: Palm Event CenterAbout Me: I’m a city girl at heart who moved to the suburbs a year ago. Now I’m adjusting to life with a front lawn, nosy neighbors, cooking attempts, and making sure the garbage pail is pulled out on time every week! When I’m not traveling, Mr. FT and I enjoy marathon sessions of Law & Order: SVU, snowboarding, photography, spoiling our 3-year old yorkie-poodle Mokka and disagreeing over what music to listen to in the car. We’re planning a small winery wedding while incorporating some cultural elements into the day as a nod to our Chinese backgrounds.
Two weekends ago, my closest girlfriends whisked me away to Vegas for some girl time. We did the usual wine tasting, shopping, visiting Hoover Dam, and of course, catching a Cirque De Soleil show.
Mr. French Toast, you can stop reading here now.
Whew. Now that he’s outta here, did you really believe we did the above? (I’m sure he doesn’t either). Because the TSA certainly didn’t find a pecker pops while going through my BM’s luggage for nothing!
That incident spiked one the most fun and memorable trips I’ve ever had. We started off Friday night at Venetian’s TAO nightclub in Vegas. The name has a special significance to me so the BM Maggie specifically reserved a table for the 12 of us.
Mrs. Cotton Candy, Riverside, CAAge and Occupation: 29, Field CoordinatorFiance's Age and Occupation: 34, Process ServerEngagement Date: July 5, 2007Wedding Date: June 2011Venue: Riverside Art MuseumAbout Me: I’m a girl in love with her best friend planning a small mid-century modern inspired wedding that’s been a long time coming. I love all things design, sewing, flea markets, and a good book. I’ve been known to swoon over a well-designed chair and often find myself craving a new addition to my chair collection regardless of the lack square footage in our home. I’m Mexican American girl who hates all things spicy but loves her rowdy Mexican family and her Latin roots. My wedding muses may not be your typical wedding superstars, but with a lot of DIY, a dash of offbeat style, and lots of love and laughs, Mr. Cotton and I plan to create a day that is unmistakably us.
I love dessert. Given the choice between a gourmet dinner and dessert, my choice would be dessert every time. That being said, it may surprise you to know that our wedding cake ranks pretty low on our list of wedding priorities. Don’t get me wrong—I adore a beautiful wedding cake, but unfortunately our budget is stretched to its max and there is no room for us to go over budget on our cake.
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VAAge and Occupation: 25, Writer/EditorFiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk ManagerEngagement Date: October 3, 2009Wedding Date: April 2011Venue: Oxon Hill ManorAbout Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.
The title of this post is a direct quote from one of the owners at Laney’s where we bought our wedding bands. I had no idea what I wanted at first, but when we looked at their selection, I found two very dainty bands that looked great with my ring.
Mrs. Bacon, ChicagoAge and Occupation: 26, Digital Advertising ManagerFiance's Age and Occupation: 25, IT Client ServicesEngagement Date: June 17, 2010Wedding Date: September 2011Venue: Ravenswood Billboard FactoryAbout Me: I'm a Midwestern girl that can't seem to commit to staying in one place for too long and is constantly daydreaming about my next adventure. I am an aspiring foodie with a weak spot for the unusual and I love semi-reality food television. My other loves easily include laughing as a form of exercise, a book that I can't put down, summer baseball games, espresso with whipped cream, couch potato days and nights with the ridiculous Mr. Bacon, and our two kitties, Lincoln and Sawyer. We're planning a faux-destination wedding for 150 of our closest friends and family in the city we've both adopted as home that has a modern, yet whimsical twist and as many personal touches as we can manage.
Do you remember when the car sites first came out with the “Build Your Own” sites? I used to LOVE them and let me tell you, I built some pretty fierce automobiles in my time. I literally could spend an hour at a site building out all the different features and colors to price cars that I’d never buy. From time to time, I do the same thing with travel sites planning made up trips to Vegas, Cabo and miscellaneous cities in Europe. It’s like online test driving!
When I came across Minted, I was immediately hooked. I could test drive invitations! This was totally my kind of site. I could play with wording, change fonts and colors, then I could save them for later. Soon I learned that Wedding Paper Divas let me do the same thing, and I was slowly sucked into spending hours each week building potential invitations. Then I realized something: I still had over a year before the wedding and at least 6 months before I even needed to order. It was time to step away from the computer until at least the end of February. Read more…
Miss Carousel, Dusseldorf, Germany/Garda, ItalyAge and Occupation: 29, International Product ManagerFiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Front End DeveloperEngagement Date: May 29, 2010Wedding Date: September 2011Venue: I’m an American-Italian girl living in Germany with my Belgian fiancé, planning a wedding in Italy. I can’t wait to show our guests the wonderful Lake Garda, Verona, and want our wedding to be a fun filled, charming, day in the life of “La dolce vita.” Mr. C and I love spending time together, and have added wedding related activities to our cooking nights, dance lessons, and road trips. We love sampling restaurants, could listen to Sinatra all day, and are just a tad geeky and into technology. As we want all of our passions to be part of our marriage, what better way to start than by incorporating them in our wedding day?
I’ll admit it: before that night in Germany when Mr. Carousel proposed, I never pictured myself wearing an engagement ring. To be honest, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted one.
Before you start thinking I’m so above it all, that all changed about five minutes after the proposal when Mr. Carousel asked me, “Shall we pick a ring together?” and I answered “Yes—tomorrow!” Suddenly I could hardly wait to have a ring on my finger. (My transformation into a wedding-obsessed bride-to-be was starting…)
During our crazy drive to Amsterdam to get ourselves an engagement ring, Mr. Carousel and I discussed my ring preferences. All I knew was that I wanted something elegant with a diamond, but I reassured Mr. Carousel that there would be no need to break the bank! We agreed that we would start by looking for something equal to half or less of Mr. Carousel’s monthly salary.
We started at the Diamond Museum (neither of us knew anything about diamonds, so we figured it was a good place to begin), and that’s where we found the perfect ring: elegant, classy, sweet, beautiful, and…modest.
Please excuse the clumsiness of the pics. We’re totally amateurs.
Mrs. Pain au Chocolat, Wilmington, DEAge and Occupation: 29, RealtorFiance's Age and Occupation: 34, RealtorEngagement Date: November 21, 2009Wedding Date: June 2011Venue: Greenville Country ClubAbout Me: An ENFJ with an artistic streak who loves backgammon, sailing, graphic design, and sleeping in. Travel (near or far), good wine, and tasty food makes my heart sing. I'm a compulsive list-maker who lives to plan and organize. Mr. P and I have lived together for 4 years, all the while renovating our city townhome bit by bit. We're planning a whimsical, Anthropologie-inspired garden wedding in June 2011.
Now that you’ve harvested your bottles for the wine-bottle centerpieces, we’re ready for the second step in winemaking: crushing/de-stemming, AKA cutting the bottles.
Let me begin by saying there are many ways to do this, ranging from “so simple I must be missing something” to crazy dangerous…like an alcohol-soaked string that is then lit on fire.
Mrs. Sparkler, ChicagoAge and Occupation: 27, Communications AficionadoFiance's Age and Occupation: 26, PublisherEngagement Date: July 21, 2010Wedding Date: September 2011Venue: Chicago Illuminating CompanyAbout Me: I’m a Southern lady living in the big city of Chicago. Well, lady may be a stretch, but I’m working hard to keep some Virginia charm in our sleek, urban, wedding-palooza! I’m addicted to marathons, not-so-famous bands, Chicago restaurants, and Mark Twain. I cry during SPCA commercials, and I think LOST was the best show to ever hit television. Mr. S and I met at a classy college mixer and, 7 years later, he’s still by my side. He’s the only child, laid back, free spirit... I’m the oldest of five kids, type-A, organizer. It doesn’t work on paper, but we’ve never paid attention to that stuff anyway. Somehow it works. And like they say, sometimes when you know…you just know.
I’ve become obsessed with having a confetti toss as Sparks and I walk back down the aisle. It would definitely have to be biodegradable tissue confetti. In our wedding colors. No big deal. They make a lot of that stuff, right? Well, until I can find some, feast your eyes on some confetti porn. Sigh.
Ms. Sloth, PhiladelphiaAge and Occupation: 35, Account Manager and Fashion BloggerFiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Design AdminEngagement Date: December 25, 2009Wedding Date: May 2011Venue: Bartram's GardenAbout Me: I'm an internet junkie and music snob with a good eye for a bargain. I couldn't live without thrift store shopping, cheeseburgers, sushi, Coke Zero, websites devoted to silly photos of baby animals, Photoshop, and Mr. Sloth. Speaking of which, he and I are a pair of goofball homebody nerds who love our beagle (the most ridiculously adorable dog EVER) to an embarrassing degree. We're planning a low-key and intimate yet festive and quirky outdoor wedding with DIY details and deeply personal touches, and it's all taking place in the city where we fell in love and call home: Philadelphia.
When Mr. S and I hired a month-of coordinator, our goal was to get someone reliable and dependable to execute the details of the wedding so that we could relax and have a good time. We were paying for peace of mind.
Unfortunately, recent events have shown me that we might have made a mistake. We might not get that peace of mind. And guys? I don’t know what to do. Read more…
