Mrs. Candy Apple's Picture
Mrs. Candy Apple, Princeton Junction, NJ/ Seattle, WA Age and Occupation: 26, Project Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Attorney Engagement Date: May 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: St. Joseph's Parish, Seattle Tennis Club About Me: I am a Pacific Northwesterner, born and bred. I have lived in many cities---Santa Clara, Durham (England); Florence; Boston; Princeton Junction---but my heart will always be nestled up near the Cascades and Olympics, which is why we are holding our wedding there. I am a bookworm and a History nerd: I love that my life consists of books, books, and more books, since I work in Publishing! Recently, all waking time not consumed by work and my daily commute has been overtaken by wedding planning. Well, that, and watching Premier-League soccer. There is nothing I love more than a good Tana French mystery, traveling to new places, Anthropologie shopping sprees, Iittala dishware, Kate Spade shoes, impeccable typefaces (think: Archer), and a nice English ale (hellooo, Old Speckled Hen!). Oh, and did I mention my obsession with wedding blogs? Yeah, there’s that too. Join Mr. Candy Apple and me as we prep for our wedding, and, more importantly, our marriage!
About Mrs. Candy Apple

Alternative title: “We Had Our Cake And Ate It Too.”

After our first cake tasting with Suzanne, Mr. Candy Apple and I were already feeling slightly full. But we had several hours to kill before our next tasting (I like to budget extra time for things such as traffic and alien abductions and such) so, of course, we decided to grab lunch. Who wouldn’t want to eat more after eating large hunks of cake?! We ducked into a teensy restaurant in Ballard and, as I was slightly nauseated at that point, I suggested that we split something. Mr. Candy Apple’s choice? Buffalo chicken sandwich. Yeah, not my idea of a light meal.

I had about two bites and was done. I basically sat there like a blob, with a stomachache, on a sugar high. Do we have to eat more cake? I asked. I never thought that day would come—the day that I couldn’t eat more cake. What is wrong with me?! Maybe it was because I have been trying to cut out sugar recently? Dang you caveman diet, and dang you anti-sugar fiance! You have ruined sweets for me.

But onward we pressed. Someone has to do it, right?

We somehow rolled made our way to Trophy Cupcakes, an adorable place in Wallingford Center that I have been going to since it opened. (I used to get my hair cut at The Edge right next door.)

So we got there, and the lovely wedding coordinator sat us down in the cute Trophy booths in the middle of the center across from the cupcake stand. If you’ve never been there, people just meander by your table. Children, specifically, meander by your table. The coordinator then proceeded to bring out 12 cupcakes. Yes, 12. It was obscene. And amazing.

We were sitting there, in the middle of the mall, with a million cupcakes in front of the two of us. Children came up and stared with their mouths open. Mommy, why can’t I have that many cupcakes? They counted them out loud. One, two, three, fourwow! They have a lot of cupcakes! Yes, children, thank you for making me feel more obese and uncomfortable than I already feel. You are lucky that I am so bloated right now, or I would get up off my chair to shoo you away.

First two down…10 more to go?! Whaa??

The lovely Mr. Candy Apple during the first two cupcakes. Back when it was still enjoyable and my jeans still fit.

This was their special February raspberry ganache cupcake—I loved the heart! And yes, my hair/ makeup is still all fancy pants from our e-shoot.

OK, I am exaggerating a wee bit. I really did like the experience. It was fun! We got to go hang out and taste lots of cake! I can’t complain about that. The coordinator even brought us tea and a huge binder of their wedding pictures to look at while we noshed on cupcakes (and were pointed at by the children). Just looking at these pictures makes me want to eat 12 cupcakes in one sitting. Thank goodness for selective memory.

But. That was a lot of sugar. A LOT. We finished the vanilla vanilla and the chocolate chocolate, had about one bite from three other cupcakes, and had to box up the rest to take home. (I love that they let you do that!) Pathetic showing, huh? We were so overloaded with sugar for the next week and a half that we didn’t eat any of the leftovers. Oops. Well, I actually may have had the last few hunks of Suzanne’s cake for breakfast the next day. And maybe another cupcake on top of that. But besides that, we didn’t eat any more sugar. (Don’t tell Mr. Candy Apple.)

All in all, though, a very good day of tasting cake. I promise that it was fun. I must admit, I am slightly ashamed at my cake eating. I thought I was more of a champ than that! And, my pants are slightly stretched out.

How about you: were you overloaded with sugar during your cake tastings? Were you able to spread the tastings out a bit more reasonably? Was it still AWESOME even though you were in a sugar coma for days after?!

I mean, if you need help with this stuff, you should just ask. I’d be happy to take one for your team. As long as it’s a yummy cupcake. ;)

To this day, I am still SO bummed that I never got to do a cake tasting (bc we decided early on we weren’t going to have a cake.) I’m a sugar fiend and every time I read about someone’s cake tasting, I curse myself for not at least making one “try and see” appointment!

We spread ours out over a week or so, I think I might have gone into a sugar coma if we didn’t :)

Yummy and heavenly all around. And seriously could that fondant heart on the ganache cupcake be any cuter? I’m excited to see what your and Mr. CA pick!

Hey, I’m doing the Paleo/Caveman diet as well! So cool to see other bees doing the same! And good to know you still squeezed cake tasting in despite the restrictions. :)

We spread our cake tastings out, but I’m all for going into a sugar coma at any time. ;) All of those cupcakes look SO good!

I brought all our tasting cakes and cupcakes home and tried small bits of them, as not to overwhelm myself.

Trophy, yay! That’s where we are going to. Our tasting is in a couple weeks, but really I don’t need to taste anymore. We have been sampling various shops - including Trophy - for the last couple months. It gets a little rough eating so much cake and frosting…drool. I LOVE sugar, baked goods, so I’m always bummed when I can’t belly up to our cupcake samplings. My FH isn’t much of a sugar lover either so he totally cramps my style when I’m trying to get him to sample things. Looks like you had fun, despite the tight pants.

Mwahahaha. I bought a few Groupons for Cupcake Royale cupcakes, so we’ll be feeding our guests with half-off lemon Babycakes. Yay! I love Trophy cupcakes though, so I might have to add some different flavors to the mix depending on the number of guests.

How are you planning to display them or is Trophy taking care of that?

I’m just delighted you mentioned Ballard in both your cake-tasting posts. That’s my old Seattle neighborhood and I miss it SO MUCH.

Cake-tasting sounds like a dream come true to me! We didn’t get to do it because our venue comes with cake. I did eat a lot of cake at a bridal show though. I would go to another one just for all the cake. I love cake with lots of buttercream frosting!

Our venue comes with a cake from their caterer but I am so tempted to visit a few bakeries to taste their cakes even though we wouldn’t need one. ;)

@Miss Lox: @Miss Hyena: I should have called you two in as back-ups. Dang it…

@Mrs. Meerkat: @toshella: Excellent!! Mr CA is definitely better at/ more into it than I am. But of course, we have to make the exception for wedding cake ;)

@Miss Tartlet: I think the sugar coma is definitely worth it

@Ms October: I know, I didn’t really *need* to taste, since I had been going there since they opened, but Mr CA needed to, and we wanted to narrow down flavors :)

@shannag: Ha, nice! I actually got a Groupon for Trophy last month!! So excited. They can do set-up for you, but there is an additional fee for that

@xtatic1: Oooh, sneaky! You totally should ;) bwahahaha

I saw your picture and I immediately though: “Wow, I could really go for a cupcake…” Holy cow, those look amazing. But 12 cupcakes after cake tasting and lunch? I couldn’t do it even on an empty stomach!
