Miss Carousel's Picture
Miss Carousel, Dusseldorf, Germany/Garda, Italy Age and Occupation: 29, International Product Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Front End Developer Engagement Date: May 29, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: I’m an American-Italian girl living in Germany with my Belgian fiancé, planning a wedding in Italy. I can’t wait to show our guests the wonderful Lake Garda, Verona, and want our wedding to be a fun filled, charming, day in the life of “La dolce vita.” Mr. C and I love spending time together, and have added wedding related activities to our cooking nights, dance lessons, and road trips. We love sampling restaurants, could listen to Sinatra all day, and are just a tad geeky and into technology. As we want all of our passions to be part of our marriage, what better way to start than by incorporating them in our wedding day?
About Miss Carousel

All my life I’ve heard the expression: “Better safe than sorry”—and I am a firm believer in it. I think preventing something negative is much better than having to deal with it. But when it came time to choose a ceremony location, I did not really follow that maxim.

After deciding that we would not go for a religious ceremony (we’re not churchgoing people or strong believers, so it felt hypocritical), we checked out civil-wedding options on Lake Garda.

Our favourite options were:

  1. The outdoor terrace on the castle in the town of Malcesine
  2. The lemon grove in the castle in the town of Torri del Benaco (closed on the sides but open above)

I loved them both but, as my mom preferred Malcesine, I picked the terrace. We booked the date and that was that.

But…I started having doubts. I started getting really anxious about that decision and constantly questioned it. Major doubts were:

  • Accessibility to the terrace is poor, as it requires a five-minute walk on a cobblestone road up a hill.
  • The reception location is 30 kilometers away—which is pretty far when you consider that it’s a highly touristy area on a Saturday.
  • The indoor option in case of rain is not so nice and would still require that walk.
  • On average in the last five years it’s rained 10 days out of 30 on the lake. Last year it was 13.

This is what was going through my head: cobblestones and rain and heels, oh my!

It took me a long time to admit it, but I’m simply not the type that can trust in things aligning her way because I will them to (like having good weather on my wedding day). I’m the type that hopes for the best but prepares for the worst.

So, in agreement with Mr. Caro, I cancelled the reservation in Malcesine and decided to look for a ceremony location that would work just as well, even in case of rain.

Did you let your anxiety about things out of your control influence your wedding decisions?

I am the same way! Not going to pick something unless it has a contingency plan for rain, is easily accessible, etc etc. I know this will rule out some places, but, it gives me piece of mind to know I have “tried to think of everything” (Though of course you can’t really predict everything, but, you know what I mean).

wow. I’m just jealous you’re getting married in Italy! lol.
One thing - with our wedding - that I had to change the DAY OF our wedding…thanks to the 95+ degree (F) heat we had here…our venue included an awesome Garden deck overlooking the city. I was so excited and wanting to have the ceremony out on that deck. Had been planning it for months…but the weather - as gorgeous as the bright blue sky was…the 95+ degree heat did NOT help - and because of the heat we had to move it inside, as we had a lot of older guests and my brother in law (our best man) had a heart condition that wouldn’t allow him to be in the heat. :(

Hope you find the exact venue you are looking for!!!

We definitely tried to limit the number of “out of our control” factors when it came to our venue, too. I’m itching to know what fab location you did decide on!

Absolutely, I’ve Let anxiety make decisions for me. I have no good advice, ’cause I wish I wouldnt do that, but there you go.

I am the same way; I had my heart set on getting married outside and had booked these beautiful gazebos overlooking the bay. But then doubt started to creep in when we upped our guest list.. where would all these people go if it rained or was cold? Certainly 100+ people could not fit in the adjacent mayor’s chambers. We will end up using the ceremony site at our reception venue which provides us with an indoor option, should we need it (which I hope we don’t!)

I don’t blame you for being anxious! Rain plus cobblestones plus not great backup plan? Yikes!

As I get closer, I get more anxious about the weather. I am ok with our option B, but really really (knock on wood) would love option A ;)

I have to agree about the weather. I can’t tell you how nervous I am about the weather for our at-home reception.

@JB: Yes sometimes you need to rule out places! It really bothers me that, while talking to vendors, they smile and say “but it won’t rain on your wedding day”, only because they want to calm you down and not have to answer difficult questions.
@JuneBride_26June2010: That is actually something that I am worried about as well! I didn’t mention it in the post, but if it’s very warm an outdoor wedding location would also be very difficult to pull off!

@Miss Tartlet: That’s the best you can do!
@Miss Hyena: Lol yeah I know what you mean…
@mizzbaseball: I think those gazebos sound lovely, but it’s good that you thought about an alternative if that doesn’t work out!

@Miss Gazelle: Yeah, not my smartest moment…
@Miss Elephant: I know what you mean!!! Touching wood and iron (that’s what we do in Italy) for you!
@Mrs. Meerkat: Touching wood and iron for you too!!
