Jar Collecting

April 1st, 2011 @ 12:11 pm by Mrs. Crepe

As I mentioned in an earlier post, Mr. Crepe got me an arrangement from Saipua that was so unique and I never forgot it. It was the inspiration for our centerpieces—mixed textures, with a romantic and freshly picked look.

During my trip back to Nashville last week, we took a quick inventory of all the jars and bottles we needed for the centerpieces. We were so lucky because half of these blue jars came from MIL Crepe, who stored beans in them. After she found out we were using jars exactly like the ones she had, she just emptied them out and gave them to us to use!

The other half came from the Hermitage Antique Mall. We were wandering around the place when I spotted a whole row of these beauties lining the top of a bookshelf. Score! They ranged from $4.50 to $5 each.

Another part of our centerpieces are old medicine/apothecary bottles. They were a bit tougher to find at affordable prices (many were priced at $6-15 each) but we were able to find quite a few at $.75-$2 each.

We scoured the antique malls in local towns surrounding Nashville for those, flea markets too. We even got a box of them from our own classifieds, here on Weddingbee.

We’re still gathering them at this point and are about 20 bottles short. You guys, it was so much fun when we started because we love searching for treasures. But now we’ve hit our burnout point with this and are thinking we should just supplement them with more easily found containers. It’s not like anyone knows what we were planning on from the start! You and me, we’ll keep it a secret.

But now, we’re not sure what to use in place of the extra bottles. Does anyone have any ideas on other types of affordable and small containers that might work with our centerpiece style?

I love what you have so far!! I know what you mean on burning out on buying antique containers for the centerpiece — I ran out of steam on ours long ago.
Michael’s tends to have a lot of cute containers in their floral arrangement/candle holder aisles. Or have you looked at save-on-crafts.com or lunabazaar.com?

Or just use clear glass masson jars. You can get them at any grocery store for cheap

We are also using vintage medicine bottles like this. I saw an adorable photo recently in a pottery barn catalog (I think) that had small stems of flowers in standard glass votive holders. It was so simple and so sweet at the same time.

We’ll definitely be doing this as well, we have a TON of votive holders so it should be a nice mix :)

What about vintage perfume bottles. These could only hold a single bloom, but their gorgeous and unique. This would give you a more decorated bottle.

I second the suggestion of clear mason jars. Also a lot of normal food jars are pretty interesting looking…. I’ve collected an Orangina bottle, some pasta sauce jars, salad dressing bottles and unique jelly jars to add to my centerpiece collection!

You can get spices at the grocery store and empty the bottles out. spice jars are similar, interesting shapes sometimes and some are inexpensive!

I envy your collection!! Being on a super duper budget, I’m using regular mason jars mixed with various interestingly shaped (or similar to mason jars) type jars.

I’ve noticed my favorite is actually the Trader Joe’s jelly jar! SO WEIRD but it’s octogonal and pretty neat looking with flowers.

I figure the jars will do their job being rustic and homey with flowers in them and some twine and I couldn’t talk the FI into the fabulous antique route.

I’m also using my white wine bottles and splurging on milk in glass bottles (from Henry’s) Pretty expensive milk BUT the bottles are lovely and I know I’ll use them for backyard decor later on.

Hope that helps!

i’m using blue ball (herk herk) jars for the main flower vessel for our centerpieces! i scoured the internet, but couldn’t find any for less than $4, and that was more than i was willing to spend. who knew that my local antique depot (doesn’t every town have one?) would have 30, count em, 30!! for a dollar a pop. needless to say, i bought all of them. now i’m on the search for depression glass candy dishes and unique milk glass vases. aren’t antique malls the best places?? god bless all things old and dusty.

You have so many great vintage pieces, I think that mixing in new, recycled glassware is a great solution! Save your tomato sauce and pickle jars and incorporate those!

Could you etch/frost smaller clear wine bottles? The size I’m thinking of is used most often for dessert wine or half bottles of red.
