Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!

Wedding-Dress Legends and Lore

April 1st, 2011 @ 3:08 pm by Mrs. Magic

As a little Tar Heel girl, born and bred*, I have grown up hearing legends and tales that occurred (or still occur!) in my awesome state. For instance, the Maco Light story. Once upon a time near Wilmington, North Carolina, at Maco Station, there was a flagman named Joe (or Charlie, maybe), and the train car he was on got disconnected from the train somehow. As ghost stories seem to always go, his luck got even worse and, to add insult to injury, another train sped up fast behind him. Joe (or Charlie) tried to wave his lantern frantically to avoid collision, but the train hit him anyway and he was decapitated. Surprisingly enough, his head was never found. Now he haunts the tracks as only a head with a swinging lantern. It’s true (maybe). Even President Grover Cleveland saw the light (allegedly). You can read all about it here.

We are so scared.

There’s tons of haunted houses and historic tales in North Carolina, but one legend stuck out more than the others. I would often hear about a mysterious woman who had an exceptional ability to help brides, especially in their darkest hour. People would mention her name at my childhood church in Wilmington…I heard her name again while an undergrad in Chapel Hill. Folks from both western and eastern North Carolina whispered about the tiny woman with the magnificent skills. I swear, I think she is even more famous than the Maco Light, if you can imagine.

She is best known, simply, as Olga. In fact, if you simply Google “Olga raleigh,” a site referencing her pops up. Not her site, mind you…she doesn’t have one. Because, after all, she is a legend, and legends do not advertise, obviously.

Here are some excerpts from two popular wedding websites regarding Olga.

Olga is, apparently, an alterations genius, angel, and savant all rolled into one. She has five-star ratings on every website that references her, and I have never heard or read a negative statement about her, which is pretty freaking remarkable in this day and age of litigious and stressed-out folks. What I have read indicates she is mysterious, her home (where she works from) is off the beaten path, and she is inexpensive. I’ve also heard she does a great job adding cups to dresses for us less endowed girls.

I called Olga up about ten months in advance and talked to her a bit about my dress. She seems to think since I just need the straps shortened, boobs cups added, and it either taken in or let out a tiny bit (depending on whether I look pregnant or not…I mean, I’m NOT pregnant, but I don’t want to look pregnant either, you know?). It should be no problem. Oh, and a wicked bustle constructed. Olga is also apparently a genius with the bustles! I have already booked Olga for my fittings in September 2011. I have the 10 AM slot on each of the four Saturdays in September, but if I don’t need them all, I will auction them off pass them along to another lovely bride, of course.

I can’t wait to meet Olga! I wonder if she will make me sign some confidentiality clause and if she will take a photo with me…

Do any legends (real or otherwise) feature in your wedding plans?

*I must come clean. While I was born and raised in North Carolina, I was bred to go to N.C. State. (My family disowned me for a while, but things are mostly better now…mostly.) I have a lot of love in my heart for the Tar Heels as well as the Wolfpack, but I never root for Duke. Ever.

Let me tell you Olga is everything she’s cracked up to be! I used her for my alterations and I could not recommend her more! She was amazing! Yes her works out of her living room in a duplex which is on a dirt path down a dark road but don’t worry! Seriously, she will give you everything you’ve wanted and even more than you ever thought! I had her take in, take out and take in my dress 3 times in 3 weeks. She did wonders! Best seamstress in the state! Works amazing with any fabric, seam or beading. She does keep a cat in the living room but is the most adorable cutest little Russian lady. Her prices are so low too! So happy you’ll be working with her!

The Krystyna/Olga debate is so funny… my best friend won’t go to anyone but Krystyna, she was almost mad that I told a different friend to use Olga.
Olga is awesome. A tiny little, 80ish year old, Eastern European woman, who gets on the ground to pin a hem, and who isn’t afraid to say whatever she has on her mind.
I hope you aren’t shy, she told my friend she had ‘nice back face’ referring to her butt when she was nervous about it looking too big in her dress! She also gave my friend a tutorial on how to pull her boobs up and sit them into the cups in the dress so they were in the right place. At one point I thought she was actually going to stick her hands in and grab her boobs for her and move them where they were supposed to be.
She is crazy reasonably priced too.
Krystyna is great as well, but she has people help her, Olga works alone, so what you see is what you get with her. It’s possible Krystyna will pin you and someone else will do the sewing, I’m cool with that for pants, but not a wedding dress.

Now I’m imagining Olga in a very fairy godmother-esque light, too. ;) My Olga is named Elizabeth who is also a miracle worker! Hopefully someday she’ll become as legendary as Olga.

I wanted to go to Duke, but was stuck on the waitlist. Because of their poor decision making, I could never root for them in any endeavor.
I heard about Olga from the one thread you screenshot. I thought it was crazy that she existed and was so sought after. Awesome, but crazy! I’m trusting my bridal salon to get it right. If not, I may cry.

Hilarious–what a great post, Miss M! I guess this is my 15 minutes of fame :)

I did get an appointment with Olga, so my advice is if she says no, call back! I can’t wait to meet her!

haha, we have an “Olga” here in GA, only her name is Ruby, and she actually has a store. But I love the legend reference.

I remember a girl I went to State with 10 years ago having a near meltdown because she couldn’t get an appointment with Olga!
