The Question of Glasses

April 4th, 2011 @ 12:29 pm by Ms. Gazelle

I know a lot of brides struggle with whether to wear glasses during their wedding. For me, this is a no-brainer. I can’t wear contacts, so I have to wear glasses. It is a long story, but I seem to have major issues with dry eyes and contacts, so I gave up trying to find contacts that would work years ago. The glasses that I am currently wearing are four years old, though, and I just went through a significant change in my prescription. I need some new lenses!

The problem is I really like these glasses. And all I can think about is that I need to pick some new frames that will look good in engagement photos and at the wedding. That feels like a lot of pressure!

At first I thought about just changing out the lenses in my current glasses, but wow that is expensive! I started looking at new frames, but nothing was clicking. This feels harder than wedding-dress shopping! I popped into Lenscrafters and almost purchased a pair of black plastic frames. Almost. The price was right, and they looked all right on. The girl was filling out my prescription on her computer and was telling me that the lenses would be a special order. As she was filling out the information, I was having buyer’s remorse and I hadn’t even purchased anything yet! Needless to say, I hightailed it out of the store.

The next night it was off to another store—Iris—and this time I brought Mr. Gazelle. He’s a big fan of the current glasses, and I really wanted his opinion. We ran through a bunch of frames, and I finally settled on these lovelies. Bonus? They are the same purple as our wedding colour! Not that I picked them solely for that reason; the colour also works really well with my colouring.

Yes I’m been back and forth on the glasses issue. I’ve finally decided I’ll wear my contacts though.

I LOVE the last set of frames! NICE!

I’m definitely struggling with that! I have contacts, but I do not wear them. In fact, I only used to wear them when I needed sunglasses, and this year I finally bought myself some prescription sunglasses.
I have a while to decide, but I think I’m probably just going to wear my glasses because they are part of who I am. :-)

I wear glasses all the time and actually have really good insurance and get a new pair every year. I love the plastic frames now and have a pair in black and brown I am always switching them up depending on what im wearing. I thought i wanted something a little more formal though for my wedding so I went and pick out a pair of totally rimless for this years glasses. They are really nice. I will post pics when they get in. I thought for pictures they would be great. I have a hard time with contact also. My fiance loves me in glasses and honestly i feel naked with out them. That pair you picked are cute!! For some reason I cant seem to find how to add a pic here?

Très hip, Gazelle! Even though I wear contacts, I *love* my glasses and would honestly wear them regularly if they didn’t give me a headache (I have a funny nose bridge) after a few hours!

Oh Gazelle, I wish I could explain exactly how much I struggled over this issue. And I almost didn’t have a choice since my eyes very nearly rejected all contact lenses. In the end though, my eye doctor made it simple… my vision is better with contacts than with glasses. Sold.

For what it’s worth, I would never have even considered contacts though if I didn’t have the transition lenses in my glasses. But really, no one wants to be wearing sunglasses in all of their wedding ceremony pictures!

I am in the same boat. I have not had my contact prescription renewed in two years plus I like how I look in my glasses! Those Coach frames are really nice.

I struggle with glasses or contacts because after a long day of contacts I am prone to getting a headache.

I wear my glasses 90% of the time since contacts bother the heck out of me. I decided to finally spend the money and get Lasik. My appointment is next week.

Yeah, I didn’t need corrective lenses full time until my sophomore year of college. The doc said it was time for glasses and I was all, ‘hey, can we just skip those and go right to contacts?’ So it was from then on. I do have an emergency pair of glasses I wear once in a blue moon (yeah, they really need to be updated, come to think of it.) but no worries for wedding pics. But I’m sure you’ll still look great!

Oh, I totally hear you! My glasses look a lot like your current (old?) ones, and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. But they are old. Probably 4 years. And the paint has rubbed off in some parts. I need new ones. But I am so attached to these! How can I possibly find ones I like as much? Your post gives me hope that it’s possible. :)

This subject is a current struggle of mine. I wear glasses 100% of the time unless I am wandering around the house in the morning, and FH loves them because to him they are me. When I suggested to my Mom and Sister (MOH) that I would 90% wear my brown plastic frames they both cringed at the idea. My sister said that they would be too casual for my dress and that they would take away from the makeup I am paying for, she thinks I should do the ceremony and pictures sans glasses. Mom suggested finding “wedding glasses”, but I don’t know what those would be…I really like my plastic frames, but I can see her point that they stand out a lot. Long comment short I am trying to determine if I can see enough (how pathetic) to do the ceremony without my glasses and then throw them on for the reception or if I decide that glasses are a must for the entire day then what should they look like? Plastic frames that are my go to preference for everyday comfort or something more “grown up/fancy/classier” that in Mom’s eyes is more wedding appropriate…

Thanks for the reminder, I need to order new glasses! I’ll be wearing contacts for the the wedding, but still need new glasses for everyday wear.

I’ll be wearing my contacts, but Mr. H is a glasses-wearer. It would be so weird if he wasn’t wearing them at the wedding!

i feel that. i just got my new glasses a week ago, and i’m kind of sad. my last pair were really awesome, and i miss them.

mostly, though, it always takes me some time to recognize myself in new glasses - and i really want to look and feel like myself at our wedding! hopefully i’ll have managed to “claim” these glasses within the month =)

I can’t wear contacts either, so I’m definitely wearing glasses. My current glasses are purple too, but purple isn’t one of our wedding colours. I think I’m just going to stick with them though - searching for new frames is always so stressful.
