About Mrs. Hyena

Beautiful Bridesmaids

April 4th, 2011 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Hyena

I let my bridesmaids choose their own dresses.

Let me clarify: I searched and searched for perfect bridesmaids’ dresses. I picked five and sent a Facebook message to my girls. I wanted them to all wear the same thing, but I wanted to get their opinions on what they were going to wear because, let’s face it, I’m not the one who has to wear it and I want them to feel beauteeful.

Because most of us are poor recent college grads, I wanted to keep them at a reasonably low price, and I wanted to delude myself into thinking they might possibly wear them again. So all of these fall in the $160-or-under range and are about knee length.

I had two runners-up that the bridesmaids liked but were not unanimous on. This Mori Lee was one of them. I took Hyena Sis out to go dress shopping, and she tried one on that was similar to this, but it wasn’t as flattering in person as it looks in the picture.

I thought the scalloped hem on the dress below was adorable, but I’d want to reverse the colors on the dress (hot pink with baby pink sash), like the flower girl’s dress.

I loooooooooved the dress below. This was another runner-up from my bridesmaids, but Mr. Hyena thought it was horrible. This was from the Sophia Tolli Spring 2010 Collection.

All four bridesmaids loved this halter number! It’a also from Mori Lee. And the picture is in the perfect color, too! :)

I thought this Dessy dress was cute, but none of them were that crazy about it either. They also didn’t have it in the right shade for us, even though Dessy goes by Pantone colors (LOVE!).

Another option was to go the David’s Bridal route, since then each girl could pick her own dress in the same color. However, I was not thrilled with the options they had in pink—the color was either a little too loud or a little too soft, never juuuuuust right. :)

The one we ultimately chose was the Mori Lee #732! Ignore the peachy-pink and imagine this in the nice burgundy in the swatch below (which is also the same color as the image of the dress above).

Aww, my sister so prettyyy. (personal photos)

Are you giving your bridesmaids a say in picking their dresses?

I think I am going to do something similar like you. I want all of my girls to wear the same dress but I would rather have them all pick the one they like best out of a few and wear them. Luckily for me all of my girls are pretty open minded and have no restrictions. I feel lucky!

Gorgeous dresses by the way! It would be hard for me to pick since they’re all so beautiful!

If I mayuse celebrities to describe the ranging body types that my girls have…my wedding party contains a:

-Snooki
-2 Keira Knightlys
-Khloe Kardashin (before the weight loss)
-Drew barrymore

My bridal party contain nothing but gorgeous women. However, putting them all in the same dress would just be cruel. I chose a color and they all picked the dress they were most comfortable in.

I also let my girls pick their own dresses. I picked a color (any dark teal, not turquoise). I then researched what stores near me carried a few designers with shades of dark teal that I liked. We went out to two stores and the girls picked whatever dress they wanted (as long as it was appropriate and knee/tea length and again, in a shade of dark teal). I love that my bridesmaids are all wearing dresses very true to them, that they love, and they feel comfortable in. The different shades of teal with the different dresses look really great when all the girls are together. I am so excited to have each of my lovely ladies stand up with me on my day, and so happy that I found my dress and they found theirs!!!

I love the style and color dress y’all chose! That skirt is oh-so-twirlable.

Yes Definitely!! I’ve been an bridesmaid before, and hated that I never had a say in the dress style. And most of the time the dress was not that flattering…

So I am NOT putting my bridesmaids through that. I am ok if they want to wear the exact same dress, but what I really care about is color. So whenever we are ready to go shopping I will let them choose their style, as long as it is on the colors I picked (royal blue and jade). That way they can each show their individuality and personality with the dress they will be wearing!

My girls had total say! It was tricky finding a gown that worked for both of them in a comfortable summer fabric. Many of the more fashion forward styles were heavier satin.

Those look great! I was looking for dresses in those same styles for my bridesmaids. Wanted something fun and comfortable that they could wear again. I think it’s awesome that you’re giving your girls choices too. It’s tough when you think you found the one but its not in your color.
Luckily I just found the dresses. They have that sexy but classy cocktail look. Which is perfect for the nightclub vibe I want for the reception but not revealing for the church : )

I wanted to pick one dress for them to all wear but with them picking one. I sent them an email with options but while 2 picked out options, figured out sizes and were ready to buy 2 weren’t. I was afraid if they didn’t all buy at the same time they would sell out of sizes (which did happen). So I told the 2 girls that were ready to wait. The second 2 girls took forever to get their act together, so to make it easier I just told them to pick out a dress but that it needed to be a certain length & color. My last bridesmaid just got her dress today, so I’m glad I went with that option, because otherwise there could have been trouble.

I showed my BM’s what I was thinking about and they let me know whether or not it was OK. I definitely spent a lot of time finding a dress under $60 though. I figured they couldn’t complain if it was that cheap :). Luckily, most have said they actually want to wear it again.

Lovely!
Still trying to figure out bridesmaid dresses, so I clicked a couple of your source links to perpetuate my search.

I would like to have them pick their own dresses on a given color. I like long dresses for weddings, but I know it doesn’t have a lot of re-wearability. We’ll see what they say.

LOVE the style!!! So cute, and definitely rewearable! I ended up doing Aria dresses - I chose their Periwinkle silk shantung and then the girls could pick any style they wanted. The Aria dresses are all a fairly similar, minimalist style, so it worked well, with each girl in a different dress!

@Miss Biscuit: Wow, under $60? Where did you find dresses for so little? David’s Bridal was pretty much the cheapest I could find, but they didn’t have the right colors.

When I was going to be a bride’s maid, the bride told us we could pick ANY dress we wanted, as long as it was ivory and black. I got a F-A-B dress that I’ve worn many times since for a steal because I could go shopping for good deals on my own how ever many times I wanted until I found something I liked. I intend to do this when I’m a bride myself.

We ran into the same thing with the DB colors. They were too loud or too soft that is how we ended up having the dresses made. ;)

I went the DB route like you said. I gave them a color (horizon) and length (short). They didn’t exactly have total say, rather we sort of worked together to accomodate the body types, my taste, their taste, and a cohesive “look” between them. I’m super excited to seem how they all look together!
