Mrs. Hyena, College Station, TX Age and Occupation: 23, Marketing Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Aerospace Engineering Grad Student Engagement Date: January 8, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Downtown 202 About Me: I'm a Texas girl who met my future hubby in high school, then headed up to Oklahoma for a college education (BOOMER SOONER!) before moving back to the Lone Star State to be with him. I love reading and recycling, Photoshop and reality TV, making lame jokes and then laughing at them, quoting movies, and Mr. Hyena most of all. I'm perpetually early and I like to get things accomplished. When my cat meows at me, I meow back. We're planning a laid-back, unintentionally DIY wedding with a cocktail-party vibe, and can't wait to celebrate our nuptials with our nearest and dearest!
About Mrs. Hyena

A Favor

April 6th, 2011 @ 11:41 am by Mrs. Hyena

In the grand scheme of budgeting, favors were one of the first casualties. I dusted my hands and was done with that one.

It’s funny how your future spouse can surprise you by being really passionate about something you don’t expect while you’re planning. Sure, Mr. Hyena was fine with not buying 130 people little boxes of candy or other tchotchkes, but since we weren’t going to go with traditional favors, he wanted to do something to honor our guests and participate in an organization that is important to us.

Once upon a time, Mr. H received a Kiva gift card from one of his family members. Kiva is an organization that is helping eliminate world poverty by allowing small-business owners and entrepreneurs in undeveloped countries to become self-sufficient. These entrepreneurs request loans to get their businesses off the ground, and “lenders” donate money to these businesses. As the loans are paid back, you can re-lend money to other entrepreneurs, so your donation goes a lot further than just a one-time payment.

For my birthday sophomore year of college, Mr. H got me a gift card, too, and it’s been a neat thing that we can do together. I’d never heard of Kiva before, but it’s been one of the coolest gifts he’s given me because it gives us the opportunity to help others.

So favors may have been off the table, but we wanted to make a donation to Kiva instead. As the budget doesn’t necessarily have wiggle room for “alternative favors” either, we decided that regardless we would want to make this donation, so we will do this out of our own pockets.

I created these little table cards to go with the centerpieces so our guests will know whassa goin’ on:

So cute! Ahhh, I fall in love with our color scheme again every project I complete.

Are you doing any nontraditional things in lieu of favors?

We decided that we were going to make a donation to our alma mater instead of favors so that maybe it can go as scholarship money to a student or two.

We did a donation too and people loved the idea - we wound up deciding to do a % of our gifts that we received. I love your signs! And Kiva is such an awesome organization!

Very cute! We made a “save the rainforest” donation in honor of our Costa Rica honeymoon and made little cards that told guests how many square feet of rainforest were saved in their honor

Instead of buying favors, we’re going to put little cellophane bags on the tables telling our guests to take the flowers from our centerpieces when they leave. Since we can’t keep them (we’re leaving on our honeymoon the day after) we want people to be able to take home a pretty piece of our decor and enjoy it. Yours is better though in that it’s more charitable. Haha.

I love the Kiva idea! We are doing something kind of like this for our at home reception.

Kiva is a fantastic organization! We are totally backwards with planning (no venue yet, more than a year out) - but we HAVE decided that our favors are going to come from a local community development organization - it’s a bakery that provides job training to at-risk youth; their cookies are delicious and it’ll come out to less than $1/per person!

Ooh I love this idea! We’re doing that too (and cookies). I’m deciding between 2 organizations, one local and one international, but both agricultural/anti-hunger….

I love it!

My sister put a mini water bottle on each person’s chair for the ceremony (it was HOT) with a note that said that they were donating clean water to one person for a year on their behalf! People loved it!
