Getting My Craft On…

April 6th, 2011 @ 11:17 am by Ms. Gazelle

Prior to getting engaged, I had only stepped into Michaels a handful of times. Now I’m obsessed! I’ve found a few projects I would like to DIY, so it is amazing how many trips to Michaels seem to be required. I blame their coupons! Forty percent off here, 10 percent off your entire purchase between 9 AM and 1 PM there… Never leave home without your Michaels coupons! Mr. Gazelle is a good sport and just chuckles.

This weekend I needed to be organized. I knew I wanted to pick up some embossing supplies, plus I wanted to grab some Styrofoam balls that I’m planning on using for centerpieces.

This required a plan of attack, as some deals ended on Friday and some started up on Saturday for the items I was interested in.

Yup, I needed a good list!

So what have I been picking up from Michaels, you might ask?

A paper cutter to help with our invitations. Paper punches that will be used with the Styrofoam balls I was buying, a glue gun, ribbon, a stamp, and embossing materials.

Above is a closeup of some of my favourite things that I’ll be using. The paper punch, a rubber stamp of a bicycle, and some bicycle scrapbook paper. I cleared one Michaels out of their entire stock of this particular paper!

After picking up the materials I needed to emboss, I of course had to try the technique out last night. First, I embossed an envelope with purple.

Then I tried pearly white. Hmm, it didn’t stand out as much as I had hoped.

Then I tried the pearly white on a darker background (but the only thing I could find was an ad in a magazine).

Then I tried purple on a black background (but I was only able to find my black camera box for that one). One thing is for sure: I love this embossing trick!

Did you find yourself shopping at new and unexpected stores after you got engaged? Did you become a Michaels-a-holic?

Just a word to the wise… those little punches like the green flower one? Do not use them with card stock heavier than 60 lb. My small pomanders are based off of that punch and 80 lb cardstock and they break like nobody’s business in my hands. I even complained to the manufacturer who then told me about the cardstock being too heavy. Too bad it’s nowhere on the packaging…

I purchased my silk flowers also at save on crafts website, they are much cheaper than Michaels.

I am a addict! But I honestly blame Michaels…if they’d slack up on giving me those 40% off coupons everytime I checked out it really would help my problem. lol. It also doesn’t help that I live right across the street from the store and it opens half a hour before I have to be at work, only one stop light away. So I’m not to proud to say that I frequently visit 2 times a day just make sure I get the most out of all my coupons and can SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH my decor budget.

I’ve always found Michaels to be addicting..hehe..so glad to hear you’ve joined the club. ;)

Love your coupon savvyness too - great job!

The purple bicycle embossed stamp on the light blue envelope (1st photo you posted) looks GREAT! :)

I also embossed with a special rubber stamp or two for my wedding…(on my invite and RSVP envelopes as well as my favor boxes!) :) It gives that extra special touch I think. :)

Good luck!

I love Michael’s and purchase lots of things from there that I will probably never use :( I am a DIY failure. The embossing came out beautifully! Kudos!

I wish!! But alas, no Michaels in Germany, or Italy… But perhaps it’s better like this, I really don’t have much of a crafty gene so it’s better that I’m not tempted to purchase cool diy stuff!

Oh man, Michaels has become my vice.

I love the embossing! I actually embossed a little bride and groom on the back of my invitation envelopes…I’m trying to find other things to emboss, because it’s so much fun!

Miss Gazzell I know exactly how you feel too! As soon as I got engaged, I started visiting Hobby Lobby on a very regular basis! I think so much that they now know me by my first and last name, it’s that bad! I find myself finding more and neat things to add to my to do list, so that means I HAVE to visit Hobby Lobby! So, yes I have to admit I am a Hobby Lobby-a-holic!!!
