We Move/I Lose My Mind

April 6th, 2011 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Sparkler

This past weekend, Sparks and I moved into our new apartment. It was, in a word… difficult. No, no that’s being too kind. It was actually one of the hardest things we have ever done together. Sure, we moved IN together. But packing up all of OUR stuff at the same time, and moving it to a new location, was a whole new ballgame.

We Move/I Lose My Mind : wedding chicago Rivermove rivermove

River Dog remained stress-free and content. As usual.

This move was destined to be a nightmare for a variety of reasons.

See, Sparks and I are very, very different people when it comes to problem solving. I am impatient, over organized, and unwilling to change my plan of attack, while Sparks is very patient, endlessly flexible, and optimistic about everything. You can see the train wreck a-comin’, can’t you? To top it off, we had our last bit of moving planned for Friday night. A night that was 25 degrees and pouring down rain. Perfect.

There were a few meltdowns, some tears, and a bit of screaming, but we finally got settled into our beautiful new space. Why am I telling you about this? Well, I’m embarrassed, hive. I’m really embarrassed that I lost my temper so many times, and couldn’t suck it up and see the big picture. I’m embarrassed that I stood in the pouring rain, staring up at the sky with tears streaming down my face shouting, “Why, God?! WHY?!” And I’m really embarrassed that I took that frustration out on Sparks. So I want to take a moment to give him a little shout out, and share a few things that have been on my mind:

1. Thank you for being the most patient man in the world. Without you, my head would surely go spinning off into nothingness. I don’t know what I would do without you, as you truly balance me and our relationship. I love you.

2. I promise to learn from your patience, and to be a better fiancé because of it. I would also like to treat you to a Publican brunch as a peace offering. Truce?

3. I think you might be a hoarder. Did you know that you have 17 coats? 17. I know it’s Chicago… but 17? Here is the TLC application if you are ready to accept help. I’m here for you. :P

Has anyone else moved with their significant other? What problems did you encounter, if any?

Moving is HARD! When my husband & I moved in together (we were pre-engagement at that time) we had just the 2 of us to move all of our crap up 3 flights of narrow stairs. Instead of pouring rain, we had 98% humidity & 90 degree temps, and neither of us are particularly fit people.

It’s a telling thing if you can get through a move & still love each other at the end, in spite of the lost tempers and mountains out of molehills. :)

We will be moving together (but also live together already) shortly after we get married. I laughed at your descriptions of yourselves, because that is my fiance and I to a T! I often feel embarrassed because of my impatient/crazy compared to his super optimistic, never impatient personality. Ah well, at least they love us anyway!

Omg, you guys definitely sound like me and my fiance and we’re about to go through the same moving ordeal in a few weeks and we’re trying to pack up as much as we can and take things over to the new apartment early. Moving is always stressful, but it doesn’t help when you got twice as many things. I’m really hoping things go well for us and it doesn’t end up raining, but it’s April so I’m not holding my breath. My fiance seems like a hoarder as well cuz he had a ton of stuff. Fortunately, he was willing to give away most of it for me. It is also tough to juggle all the wedding planning with moving.

I hate those times when I am just a little stress ball and take everything out on the future hubs. I always feel so horribly guilty afterwards and rightfully so.

haha wow your post reminded me of the day we moved in together…pouring rain… my personality seems exactly like yours, while my FI’s personality seems exactly like your FI’s personality. It was a disaster. He was the one that pushed moving out, and then was busy at work, so I got stuck moving a lot of the stuff… he was so relaxed about it…and well… I was not haha. This lead to a lot of arguments, yelling, me looking up at the rain…asking “Why God, Why” it’s almost creepy how similar that is. But it’s all good now :)

@heather5743: I think it’s ok to have 17 coats as a girl. I know that’s not fair. But we know how to wear those coats! ;)

I’m totally sending that hoarder application to my fiance. We just moved into our first house 3 months ago, and it was super stressful. Especially since my guys hasn’t thrown out any movies, cds or tshirts he’s bought since high school 11 years ago.

Moving was not fun, but it feels so good once you’re unpacked!

Our moving experience was stressful too… we moved halfway across the country together and the packing process was insane. Never realized we had So. Much. Stuff. I was so overwhelmed by the mess that I would just kind of stand there looking around wildly… FI had to gently give me an assignment or else I wouldn’t know where to begin :)

Oh yeah, and the 13-hour drive, a third of it in heavy pounding rain, was super fun too!

@miss wordowl: LOL if you do have more than one “guy” you should also send an application to TLC for one of their shows. ;) LOL!

HATED moving. Hated it. FI would bring over an armload of stuff in crispy old plastic bags (no boxes natch) and dump it in the center of the living room. When I asked where he was planning on putting these bags of old receipts and random car parts and mismatched socks, he acted as if keeping these things in the middle of the room was TOTALLY NORMAL. Argh!!!
