Antiquing It Up

April 7th, 2011 @ 11:13 am by Ms. Gazelle

The other day Mr. Gazelle had some studying to do, so I decided to get out of the house and do something a bit out of character. I decided to hit up some antique stores.

You see, I blame Etsy. There is so much awesomeness on there! Pictures of beautiful ruffled hobnail milk-glass cake stands have me drooling over the idea of prettying up our wedding cake.

I Googled antiques in Calgary and decided that Heirlooms Antiques seemed like a good place to start. This store was amazing! All kinds of beautiful china, chests, crystal, and glass.

Royal Doulton figurines. Vintage purses, gloves, and hats. Old milk bottles, food tins. They had a pretty good number of old Herend figurines, including this one:

My mom is from Hungary, and we visited the factory while visiting family as a child. I was always drawn to the lady playing the guitar. The one for sale at Heirlooms Antiques is about a foot tall. Love it…but it is a little out of the budget…

Anyhow, there were quite a few gems there, and I managed to pick up three things I’m in love with. First up? I was hoping to find a jewellery box so I could graduate from the tiny organza bags collected in a Ziploc bag that I’ve been using.

Next up was this gorgeous Fenton milk-glass covered dish. I honestly have no idea what I’ll use it for; I just really liked it. I could see a love affair with milk glass starting…

And finally, this glass cake stand. I couldn’t find one in milk glass there, but I think this one is simple and pretty.

From there I popped into Urban Barn and found this super-cool antique looking bird cage. Card box, anyone?

Finally I stopped by Crave Cupcakes for a little treat. Pumpkin cupcake with cream-cheese icing. Yum!

Did you find yourself doing something a bit out of character in preparation for your wedding, such as antique shopping?

My mum is an antique hound, so I grew up being dragged to antique stores. A year or two after I moved out of home, I suddenly wanted to visit an antique store again, and now I do it for fun myself!
Have you been to the antique mall off Blackfoot, just south of Inglewood? It’s really great, way less stuff in cases than Heirlooms. I don’t like it when I can’t pick stuff up! The best antique mall used to be Curious Cat, but that’s the building the Currie Barracks Farmers Market moved to - I don’t know where all that stock went when they got kicked out of the building. That was one of those great stores that was like a treasure hunt, you could almost get lost in there!

Ha ha, I am so useless when it comes to antiques. I once saw a glass figurine and didn’t know it was really expensive…boo me. I love the glass covered dish. So pretty!

I, uh, manifested an obsession with milk glass. I had no idea it was so awesome. Our local thrift stores have tons of vases and compotes, so it’s been a little dangerous.

Now that’s a good productive day!! Good thing that you finished it off with the cupcake to replenish the energies you spent while shopping - I think I’ll be doing the same this weekend :-)

My FSIL collected a bunch of glass vases from Goodwill, and even though our wedding isn’t using much glass, I still want to go scour Goodwills for treasures!
