Mrs. Sparkler, Chicago Age and Occupation: 27, Communications Aficionado Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Publisher Engagement Date: July 21, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Chicago Illuminating Company About Me: I’m a Southern lady living in the big city of Chicago. Well, lady may be a stretch, but I’m working hard to keep some Virginia charm in our sleek, urban, wedding-palooza! I’m addicted to marathons, not-so-famous bands, Chicago restaurants, and Mark Twain. I cry during SPCA commercials, and I think LOST was the best show to ever hit television. Mr. S and I met at a classy college mixer and, 7 years later, he’s still by my side. He’s the only child, laid back, free spirit... I’m the oldest of five kids, type-A, organizer. It doesn’t work on paper, but we’ve never paid attention to that stuff anyway. Somehow it works. And like they say, sometimes when you know…you just know.
About Mrs. Sparkler

“Ooh-rah!”

April 7th, 2011 @ 6:17 pm by Mrs. Sparkler

I really haven’t given much thought to cultural traditions when it comes to our wedding. My family is a classic American mash-up that includes a lot of Irish, a lot of Polish, and a bit of Native American (I know, hard to believe). So, while I love the Polish Bread and Salt tradition, and some of the Native American blessings, I’m not sure that I feel a connection strong enough to make me want to include either in the wedding. And while Sparks is probably 85% Irish, I’m pretty sure the only connection he feels to the motherland occurs when his hand is wrapped around a glass of Smithwick’s.

However. One thing I am very strongly connected with is the long history of military service in my family; most recently with my dad (more on him later). He and my mom were married in a classic and beautiful military ceremony in Pensacola, Florida:

Mom had her bouquet modeled after Princess Diana’s. Maybe Kate Middleton and I will wear the same dress… ha!

In honor of my military upbringing (and my awesome family), Sparks and I will be stealing incorporating some Marine Corps traditions into our own wedding. We’re still tossing around a few ideas, but two elements that will definitely be added to our day are:

1. Swords!!!

Ok… “sword.” As in, just one for cutting the cake. And not just any sword, but my Dad’s saber that he and my Mom used on their wedding day.

That’s right… we get to cut our cake with a sword. Don’t be jealous.

Getting the saber to Chicago will be kind of tricky. It’s at my grandpa’s house in Baltimore right now, and I can’t exactly carry that thing on Southwest (can you imagine? “No Mr. TSA, you don’t understand, this sword is for my WEDDING.”). So, right now, Mom Sparkler and I are thinking of shipping it overnight so we can track it.

2. Style

My Mom’s style, to be exact. In the middle of her reception, my Mom changed into a red dress in honor of the Marine Corps. I love this idea and I would love, even more, for it to catch on as a new family tradition. After all, wearing red at my wedding might even be lucky. :)

I can’t decide if I would change for the very end of our reception (on the way to the after-party, perhaps?), or wear one for the rehearsal dinner.

How much does that Tory Burch dress look like my Mom’s?! I’m thisclose to ordering the entire outfit. Any military brides (or brats!) out there? What traditions are you keeping for your big day?

That is SUCH a cute idea to wear a red dress (the one you showed seems to be almost an exact duplicate!) in honor of your parents, I love it!

For what it’s worth, I actually think you CAN take a sword on a plane. I brought one back from Spain a few years ago, and as long as it was packaged to high heaven and checked as a piece of luggage, it got through A-OK. Just a thought :)

I love the red dress. We will be displaying our dress blues to honor our Marine Corps years.

My FI was a USMC Harrier pilot for 11 years–we’re cutting the cake with his sword, too! It was the only part of our planning that he HAD to have…and I love it! Hadn’t thought about a red dress…but that might be an awesome surprise for him!

Hee hee!

I get to have the cake-cutting sword and the sword arch (marrying a Marine)!! And the uniform *drool* and and and…

…my usually-practical fiance is a tanker, and has so far decided that we need an Abrams tank involved somewhere, depending on where we get hitched. I’m starting to worry for his sanity.

JillBill is right about being able to take a sword on a plane, but it might just be specific airlines - as long as it’s checked baggage it’s usually ok.

Oh my gosh - I love everything about this! That red dress is soooo fab and looks just like your moms!

Oh, and I am totally jealous of you sword cake cutting! Like super jealous! Here’s a tip if you do decided to ship it, use FedEx, because unlike UPS and DHL, they guarantee your shipments. This is how we ship everything at my office and FedEx is always on time, even if its overnight or ground.

Hmmmm… you just gave us an idea on what to use for the cake cutting!

My FI would KILL me if I suggested his katana! LOL! But… I do have several daggers he gave me!

Thank you!!!!

Love the idea of the new traditions! And, though I would NEVER wear red (ex-husband’s wedding included red roses… um, no. no red ANYWHERE on me for this wedding!) I love the idea!!!!
