Cinna-suit

April 8th, 2011 @ 5:31 pm by Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

We didn’t spend much time looking in stores around here for Cinnamon Buns’ suit. Being from a province where everyone brags about our beef and where it seems like 80% of restaurants call themselves steak houses, well, let’s just say that there are a lot of ‘Big & Tall’ suit shops around. Cinnamon Buns is not big, and both of us would be laughed out of any shop that has ‘tall’ in the name. So we were looking for a nice black suit (with vest!) that would come in the right size, with a price we could afford.

Enter Indochino. Indochino is a website that sells custom-made suits! You put in your measurements, pick your suit, click through the customizing steps and BOOM. Suit tailored to you delivered to your door in a few weeks. Three weeks, in our case! We ordered their “tailor’s kit” first, to get a feel for the suit fabrics. With the cheap suit prices, I was expecting cheap, unacceptable, shiny fabric, but they were really nice good quality wool. We picked this one, the Black Day At The Office suit:

In the customizing steps, you get to choose how many buttons (vest & jacket), back flap or vent on the jacket, lining colours and the like. We decided that it would be fun to have a coloured lining for the jacket – Cinnamon Buns picked purple. We figured we’d get the vest to match, so it got a purple lining too. I measured him, using the useful drawings and videos on the website when we weren’t sure what to do, it was all very quick and easy. Three weeks later, this arrived:

You can see the purple!

Cinnamon Buns, looking very serious wearing wedding shirt and non-wedding tie with his new suit. I’m sure this will come as a surprise to no one, but it is hard to photograph a black suit in a dim apartment!

The fit was really good considering that it was made from measurements I took, and made by some person somewhere who has never met Cinnamon Buns. The pants need to be made a little longer (neither of us has that particular problem very often!) but there is plenty of hem to let down. The vest fits fine. The jacket was fine when standing like he is in the photos, but pulled across the back when he went to hug me. Now I want him to be able to hug me on our wedding day without worrying about ripping his suit, so we took the jacket to a tailor. Indochino currently has a $75 perfect fit guarantee – if you take your garment to tailor to get just the right fit, and fill in the proper form on the website within the right amount of time, you can get up to $75 from Indochino to pay for alterations. The tailor we went to said that en-biggening the back/shoulder area of the jacket would cost $60-$75. Bingo. Oh, and thinking of the money, I bought a Groupon a few months before that got us $100 off the already-reasonable suit!

Mmmm, love a man in a vest.

Here is where we get to the only real surprise of the order. The picture of the back of the vest on the model shows it as black. The lining on the suit is also shown as black. The thing is, when it arrived, we discovered that the back of the vest is not actually the wool suit fabric, it is the lining fabric. You can see where this is going, yes?

Cinna-suit : wedding calgary menswear 5582169 The Suit05

Oops. We’d both pictured it being black on the back, with purple on the inside. I mean, it isn’t horrible, and would look quite sharp with a black shirt, but neither of us is sure what to do for the wedding. Is purple vest-back ok? Does it look funny? It wasn’t mentioned at all on the website that the back of the vest would be the lining. Maybe this is more obvious to people who buy suits more often?

With a white shirt, I think it might be ok, even though purple isn’t a wedding colour. But I’m just not sure about purple and teal. We’d both been picturing completely black vests setting off the teal shirt so nicely. We probably won’t send this one back, because it does match the suit nicely, and is a nice vest, but we may order another vest that would be completely black.

What would you do? Stick with the purple? Go back and get an all-black one?

Lol on the purple backing. Yes, typically vests are just the lining at the back (I’m not sure if that’s to reduce constriction or what) - so if you ordered purple lining, that’s how the back will look!

I think it would be fine with a white shirt. If he’s going to wear a colored shirt I would order a new one!

Hi CB–yeah, having vests be lining-backed is pretty standard in the menswear world. It was originally a cost-saving measure, since lining fabric is cheaper than suiting, and traditionally a gentleman wouldn’t take off his suit jacket anyway, so no one would see it.

As for your issue, it depends– is he going to have his jacket off a lot? If so, and the color combo will bother you, you should e-mail someone at Indochino and see if they will cut you a deal on a new vest with a black/neutral lining back.

I wouldn’t be too happy about that. I would definitely call the company and see what they can do. They should either replace or give you a deal on a new vest.
Nice looking suit otherwise!

@dlovesr: As per the other posters’ responses, this is pretty standard. I am not sure the company can be faulted at all. That being said, no harm in contacting to see if they would swap out for an all black vest.

With the teal shirt I would probably get an all black vest for the wedding. The suit looks great!

I wouldn’t mind the purple if it was me. I went to a purple and teal wedding before, and it was beautiful! But if it bothers you, contact the seller and see what you can do!

I would have been clueless about the vest back too. I think with a black or white shirt it could look snazzy; with the teal, it looks a bit wild.
I’ve never heard of this company before but it’s such a crazy and cool concept!

hehehe, the purple is kinda funny… that said I would see if they can change it to something a little less “bold” :)

Very nice suit and it’s just now that I knew about Indochino. Thanks for sharing about them, that’s also very convenient. And it’s very cute how you have played with lining color! :D

We ordered our suits from Indochino as well since my fiance’s brothers are tough to fit (very tall and slim). It was pretty clear to us that the vest would be satin on the back - Indochino doens’t seem to do ones that have wool backing. We went with the black back and it’s not too shiny.

We also found that the suit was a bit shorter than we expected - note to others considering this route that you might want to add an inch to the measurements.

My FI grew up with family connections to the men’s formal wear world and has been trying to get in to dressing better on a regular basis. He flipped out when I showed him this website, he loved it! Thanks for the link and the post!

Mr. Tartlet ended up going with Indochino as well! He also needs some minor alterations done and just told me about the perfect fit guarantee over breakfast this morning. I’m glad the company worked out for Mr. CB–he looks great!

I like the purple lining, but go with whatever you two are most comfortable with!

Thanks for the head’s up, I’d never heard of Indochino before! And, I agree with Miss E…I’m not crazy about the purple vest with the teal shirt…but I think it would look pretty dapper with a white or black shirt!

Simple! Since the vest is black, just get a tailor to switch out the purple back fabric for black - either lining or suiting. It really shouldn’t be a dear job, as lining is cheap and the tailor can cut the new back off the old back piece to get the shape and size perfect.

Good luck!

I almost bought an indochine groupon too, but shyed away as I hadn’t heard any reviews from ‘real’ people.

The lining back of vests has always bothered me- to the point that our guys will not be wearing vests!

we also did the indochino route (w the groupon), but were disappointed on several fronts. its not that its not a nice suit. it is. and thankfully my fiance wears suits to work a lot, but despite the lining we ordered a grey suit and instead of being grey, its black and white. so, now we’re not sure what to do. use this suit for the wedding? or do we get another suit for the wedding and just have him use this suit for work? oh well. at least it’s nice. too bad we picked green for the lining…

He looks great! I’m glad it worked out so well. We’ve talked with the GM about Indochino and they are on board….but Bay days are on right now and they have some great suit prices. I’m hoping we can round up the two GM and go sometime this week. It is harder than you think to round up two GM, especially when one of them doesn’t have a phone… Whatever happens, we need to order ASAP!

Anyhow, if we don’t go with Indochino and if you do want to order Mr. CB a new vest I have a groupon that we wouldn’t be using if you are interested in it.
