First Dances

April 8th, 2011 @ 3:38 pm by Mrs. Hyena

I always figured it would be pretty easy to pick our first dance song. “Our song” is Rascal Flatts’ Bless The Broken Road,  and we could just leave it at that, but you know how I like to make things difficult. :) I thought it seemed a little slow for a first dance, and we decided we’d rather use it for the processional.

Back to the drawing board we went. Mr. Hyena wanted something very classic, and I wanted something that really represented “us” as we are. It took us a while to find the point where those two meet, but we’ve done quite a bit of brainstorming, and here are some options that, if we don’t end up revisiting, at least they can give you some ideas!

You and I by Michael Buble

We both really liked this song, but I think it might have been ruined by one line in the third verse. Something along the lines of, “You may not be here forever,” which I don’t really think is a deal-breaker, but he was over it. *pout* But … pianos!

Smile by Uncle Kracker

The first time I heard this, I knew it was perfect. Mr. H didn’t like that it was sung by Uncle Kracker. Psh. No one will know!

Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra

I’m pretty sure Mr. Hyena has Frank Sinatra’s entire discography. There were a lot of song options by Frankie!

I’d Rather Be With You by Joshua Radin

I would like to thank Pandora for introducing me to Joshua Radin. He has a byooteeful voice!

Til There Was You from The Music Man

Start at about 1:15 in. This would be fitting, since Mr. H knows “Trouble” word-for-word. :)

Grow Old With You by Adam Sandler, from The Wedding Singer

Technically the song starts :27 in, but it’s such a cute scene you should watch the whole thing. :) This one was ALMOST PERFECT, but once we edit out all the talking, the song is only about a minute and a half long, and we both wanted our first dance to be longer than that.

<

Is it obvious which picks are mine and which are my darling fiancé’s? :) What are you using for your first dance?

It must be a TX/OK thing. I just can’t stand the thought of a country song being sung by someone named Uncle Kracker! But I do love that song. Also, I love Sunshine by Steve Azar. But we are having our first dance to a Bart Crow Band song, and I am walking down the aisle to some Cross Canadian Ragweed! =)

We aren’t necessarily country fans, but we danced to “Only you can love me this way” by Keith Urban. Good luck!

I’m partial to the Wedding Singer one… although I see the issue about it being too short!

My fiance and I have decided on “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall & Oates. We’re not sweet slow dancing type of people, so it seemed perfect!

My vote definitely goes to “I wanna grow old with you” - It’s on our must play list, but you’re making me want to reconsider our first dance song. Also, on the soundtrack it’s 1:55 - I think in front of everyone, almost 2 minutes will seem like a great length (I’ve seen a few first dances that seemed to go on forever, and not in a good way). Also, I bet someone who knows about editing audio files could loop the chorus and make it a bit longer if you prefer :)

Your top choices are very similar to ours!
Our song is also “broken Road”, and FI proposed asking me to grow old with him, so “Grow old with you” is also a huge possibility to us. And come on, who doesn’t love Frank? Good Luck!

You can get Grow Old With You on Itunes and at 1:55 is a good length for a first dance…your dj could even transition into something else if you wanted.

@wareaglebride: Oh that’s such a cute idea! Love that song, especially in (500) Days of Summer! :)
@mclove & @NC Girl: Such a good movie! Maaaarion, Madame Libraaaarian!
@misscoffee: Yep! For the whole thing actually, since our aisle is so short and the song is so long!

Ours is “Then” by Brad Paisley. You can use “Grow Old with You” for the cake cutting. That’s what they did at my sister’s wedding

I love that scene from the wedding singer. To bad there isn’t a longer version of the song.

I also love “Wanna Grow Old with You” from the Wedding Singer. My cousin used it as her cake cutting song but she had a quartet perform it. If you’re having one, they could play it over to lengthen it!

We are having Shania Twains “When You Kiss Me”. We’re not really country listeners. But we love the song!

We are Colorado transplants and are dancing to John Denver’s Annie’s Song! The lyrics are so touching, I hope I don’t cry during the dance!!

@Miss Ostrich: Thanks! Should be lots of fun!

@Miss Hyena: I already liked the song, and (500) Days of Summer sort of sealed it as excellent in my mind. Also, it just hit me that “Til There Was You” was in the Wedding Singer too. Maybe you can just do a Wedding Singer themed wedding! Haha.

They’re all sweet choices! I particularly love “Til There Was You” and anything Frank :) Eek! Looking forward to see what you choose!

@wareaglebride: I secretly dream of doing a choreographed dance to this song for our first dance! AWESOME choice :)
